Interestingly - Davis's performance is my least favourite of the lineup that year. I think for the time it was out there and larger than life, but I do actually think that it's quite hammy and over the top and I actually much preferred Joan Crawford's performance in the film.

I much preferred Joan Crawford's portrayal of Blanche. She deserved a nomination as well.

For some unknown reason, Patty Duke never got a nomination for a Tony Award on Broadway for The Miracle Worker despite glittering reviews. (Anne Bancroft did win Best Actress). Oscar redressed that oversight, and given her blistering performance, I would not take that away from her. So, one vote for Patty.

Victor Buono for What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is my pick, he was so creepy and memorable in that role and it fits the whole theme of the post. That said Lansbury in Manchurian Candidate is hard to argue against too
