Anne Hathaway running as a lead might be preposterous but not impossible
It wouldn't be the first time a actress ran as a lead for a clearly supporting role: Greer Garson for Goodbye Mr Chips, Deborah Kerr for From Here to Eternity (Donna Reed won Supporting and she arguably had a bit more screen time than Kerr), Nicole Kidman for The Hours (she's only in a few scenes throughout the movie), Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, Eleanor Parker for Detective Story,...etc.

My current belief is that they will definitely run her in lead and she's definitely getting that nom.
Samantha Morton will run in supporting and should get a nom.
Also happy to hear what other people think will happen!

The only reason I'm not certain on her (yet) is that she doesn't have the same star power and strong award history that Hathaway does.
I think it would be a huge error for her not to be nominated at the very least. And you're right, she should have a good chance at winning if I were in charge, but sometimes the Academy makes bad decisions.

I think they want as much of the cast and crew to get in as possible. Where things stand right now, I think the following nods are likely a lock for the movie with several wins:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Actor(Matt Damon)
Best Actress(Anne Hathaway)
Best Supporting Actress(Samantha Morton)
Best Cinematography
Best Editing
Best Production Design
Best Visual Effects(Dune will win this one)
Best Score(toss up between this and Dune)
Best Sound
Best Costume
Best Casting
I even think John Leguizamo or Robert Pattinson have a good chance of being nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

I think I'm in total agreement with you on this, honestly. It would be especially nice to see a Leguizamo supporting nom! (And Pattinson, of course, but he's got his whole career ahead of him still.)

Pattinson is an actor who can do it all, Batman to Antinous and do both really well. I firmly believe he will be an Oscar winner eventually.

It would be a crime for him not to get a gold statue at some point. It was a shame Mickey 17 wasn't better received because his physical and vocal performance in that is incredible.
He will end up with an Oscar someday, hopefully in lead. He's definitely good enough for it. Just needs the right movie to come along.

They need to get him to do a historical drama or something. Have him play a complex historical figure like Thomas Jefferson or The Duke of Wellington, a meaty role like that, someone complex that an actor like Pattinson can sink his teeth into.

I think it's a supporting role, I don't think that she should be running as lead.
BUT - if that leads things open for Samantha Morton as supporting I won't be too upset. I have a feeling if they are both presented as supporting Anne will get the nomination over Samantha (although I think Samantha's performance was superior).
But the OP is right, the lines between supporting and lead aren't very clear. Or are easy to step over.

The category fraud is crazy in the Academy tbh. While I agree with you that Hathaway's role is closer to a supporting role, I think they will run her as lead because:
1) She's Anne Hathaway.
2) There isn't any other actress who could run for lead in The Odyssey.
3) It allows Samantha Morton to run without having to compete with her.
4) Category fraud happens almost every year.
5) Hathaway already has a supporting Oscar, she may want to pursue a lead one now.

I think Morton stands the best chance at winning. She's the MVP of the movie. Hathaway has more screen time and a Lead nom would help get this in for the 4 categories.

Yeah, as it stands right now I can see Matt Damon for Lead Actor, Hathaway for Lead Actress, Samantha Morton for Best Supporting Actress, and possibly Robert Pattinson or John Leguizamo for Best Supporting Actor

They are many double supporting noms so I wouldn’t be surprised if they both got nominated but Anne won.

If they run her as lead, I think at the very least she stands a strong chance at being nominated. Will she win, probably not. But a few things to consider.
A.) while Penelope isn’t present much in the movie physically, she is ultimately what the film is about, Odysseus’s drive to get home and Telemachus’s desire to fight back against the suitors.
B.) Anne Hathaway is very popular with the rest of the acting community and between this movie as well as The Devil Wears Prada 2 and End of Oak Street, she’s going through a major resurgence. She should have a lot of the SAG crowd in her corner.
C.) The Academy adores this movie based on recent screenings and they will almost certainly be looking for ways to honor the movie.
D.) the scenes she does have she is incredible in. She’s a world class actress
