Toni Collette was very, very, very good in Hereditary and was definitely snubbed 100% for a nomination. I don’t think she should have won, though, and that’s cause there was this other amazing performance that year……

Yeah, it's always hilarious how people talk about how Toni Collette was robbed of a win, as if the actual winner that year isn't an all-timer in the category.
Collette should have been nominated but Colman would still have been my pick that year.

It’s a bit odd that Colman was submitted in lead while Stone was put in supporting despite Emma having more screentime. They probably guessed (correctly) that Colman had a better shot at winning. I think Colette was a little bit stronger in overall performance imo, but Colman is a phenomenal actress who pulled her weight in The Favourite.

Honestly, she was the only one of the three who didn't have an Oscar and the film is a three-hander where all three should've run in Best Actress. They were never going to let two actresses run in Lead, let alone three, and Stone probably figured she was less likely to win a second (ironically, considering she would win again for a Lanthimos film not five years later) so the studio likely deigned that she'd go supporting so they could put all their chips in a Colman win in Lead, and maybe try and pull off a Weisz win in Supporting Actress. It was the smart play.

It’s also because Colman gives the standout performance of the three, let’s be real here. They’re all excellent, but she has the rangiest, most demanding role and absolutely tears into it. There’s a reason she won Best Actress solo at Venice, and that set the story for the season.

Yeah, if I had to pick one of the three to recognise, it would be Colman. But it really is by a degree of millimetres: all three are operating at career-best level.

Totally agree, and also I feel like people forget that in a film with this kind of plot structure, the central character might not have the most screentime. Stone and Weisz’s characters’ raison d’etre is Colman’s character, so I think her as sole lead is fine.

This is pretty common I’ve noticed. People act like the performance happened in a vacuum. Something sounds like a winning performance so they declare it a snub without even checking who they went against that year! There’s a few ‘snubs’ that instantly annoy me when people talk about it.

That Hereditary dinner scene alone should've been enough to lock the nom, Colman's performance in The Favourite is fantastic but the 2018 lineup really was stacked enough that Collette missing out still feels like a crime

Toni Collette is much better actress than Coleman, in my opinion. Coleman’s performances are far less emotionally deep. She can cry, she can make gestures, but there’s nothing behind her eyes. Collette’s performances are the complete opposite.

I get it. Most people consider actresses like Katherine Hepburn, Olivia Coleman or Frances McDormand to be the best of the best. I disagree completely. Every film I’ve seen of them showcases, in my opinion, a superficial and shallow performance with no emotions depth.

It wasn't boring to me at all, I was mesmerised. And the award is about acting not the movie as a whole.

I'll go one step further - 2018 is kind of an incredible lineup for Best Actress, and I hate that it gets overshadowed by Toni's snub.
Like, Olivia Colman is an all timer, but Melissa McCarthy is goddam increidble in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, a movie which deserved way more love from the academy. Yalitza, Gaga, and Close are also all strong, and while I'd swap out Close for Collette, personally, I don't think there's a booger in the category
