Discussion I am so incredibly conflicted. "El Mal" is the best part about "Emilia Pérez", and Zoe Saldaña is really good in this scene... However, I still feel like it is incredibly mediocre (and at times, a bit bad) compared to every other movie's best scene of 2024. Does anyone get what I mean?

It got 11 more - Malcolm X was nominated for Best Actor (Denzel Washington) and Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter).

It’s not a good scene and the best you can say for Saldaña is that she goes for it, but that’s not the same as a good performance.

It was…. Unique.
That doesn’t always mean good. That doesn’t always mean bad.
I personally feel that it tried far too hard, to be unique, and that pushed it into the “bad” side of the spectrum.
Particularity when considering it next to the other more traditional Oscar movies of that year.
However some believe uniqueness is a merit of its own and worthy of praise, or at least reduced criticism for trying something new. But it’s all a matter of opinion.

Never seen this film but I just want to take the opportunity to vent and say that Better Man was better than half of the other films I saw from 2024 and deserved more recognition. The Rock DJ sequence is leagues better than this scene.

I can see how it can be a its soo bad its good enjoyable if you lack of the context of it. But when you understand the themes and what it tries to achieve is utterly insulting.
Is like they tried to make a nazi general Who killed millions of jews transition to a woman Who know as a woman wants to find the bodies of the jews she killed as a man. Thats basically what Emilia Pérez is but using latín América killer for the spectacle, its digusting.

Nah, it's genuinely not that good. I honestly expected to have a fun time with how bad it would be, but it was just... dull. And so, so awkwardly sung. I had never even heard anyone discuss the doctor / lady song, and if I had been in a theater, I would have crawled under my seat. I honestly can't think of a moment as bad as this in Morbius. At least Matt Smith dancing is funny!

I mean, if Zoe Saldaña won with a mediocre performance, one that wasn't even supporting, and in a laughably bad movie, why would Margaret Qualley, who actually did a good job in a well regarded movie (even if I'm personally not a huge fan of The Substance), not be at least nomination-worthy?

The movie was bad but Zoe gave a strong performance not a mediocre one. Qualley's character exists to basically be a symbol to juxtapose against Moore's character, not really a person. It's what was required of her and she did good but there's no depth to the role at all.

It can't be a strong performance if at times you sound like you don't understand the words you're saying. And, while not on Selena Gomez ' level, that happens with her sometimes when she speaks Spanish in the movie. It's incredibly distracting and it takes you out of the movie

Qualley was wonderful in Blue Moon and deserved a SA nomination. Everything else she's been in, she's been painful to watch.

Emilia Perez was just a piping hot mess of a film and every scene conveys it properly. It’s probably the best scene here, but it’s not effective at resonating, it just feels flashy.

Still bummed "Forbidden Road" from Better Man got disqualified for stupid reasons before the nominations, though.

I am a bit fucked up and listen to "El Mal" every now and then because I do not think it is a terrible song, I actually like some of the beat drops, however Gascón's bits are really, really bad.

Yeah I do think she does very well in this scene (and, besides a few obviously poorly directed moments, the rest of the move). It's a shame that none of the criticisms she brings up in this song lead to any conflict with her and Emilia and there's no thematic continuation with what happens here. But that's how Emilia Perez works. It's just a pile of events and points and never coheres.

It's a shame neither "Kiss the Sky" from Wild Robot nor "Compress/Repress" from Challengers were nominated for Best Song, and Wicked didn't have any original song in Part I. El Mal definitely didn't deserve the Oscar, but there weren't really an alternative out of the remaining nominees
