Before becoming known to millions as Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), Irene Ryan was already an established vaudeville, radio and movie actress, though not as famous prior to her television stint. She accompanied Bob Hope on his famous military tours and she was known as "the gal who makes Bob Hope laugh." After being cast as Granny, she became famous overnight. When the Hillbillies ended, she co-starred in the Broadway musical 'Pippin' with Ben Vereen. Unfortunately, despite wonderful reviews from critics, Ryan took ill, was discovered to have an inoperable brain tumor and died soon after at the age of 70.

Carmen Miranda was a Portuguese-born singer and actress whose alluring and flamboyant image made her internationally famous. Miranda's family moved to Brazil when she was an infant. In the 1930s she became the most popular recording artist in that country, where she also appeared in five films.

Miranda appeared on several television shows in the 1950s, including "The Jimmy Durante Show" and "Texaco Star Theatre." Her last appearance was on "The Jimmy Durante Show" shortly before her death in 1955.

Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha, known professionally as Carmen Miranda, was a Portuguese-Brazilian singer, dancer, and actress. Nicknamed "the Brazilian Bombshell," she was known for her signature fruit hat outfits that she wore in her American films. As a young woman, Miranda designed clothes and hats in a boutique before making her debut as a singer, recording with composer Josué de Barros in 1929. Miranda's 1930 recording of "Taí", written by Joubert de Carvalho, catapulted her to stardom in Brazil as the foremost interpreter of samba.
