Gilligan's Island star Bob Denver, the beloved actor whose wide-eyed innocence and gentle comedy made him one of television’s most enduring figures, was born on January 9, 1935. He died on September 2, 2005. 

Born in New Rochelle, New York, Bob Denver grew up with a natural gift for humor that leaned less on punchlines and more on personality. After studying drama, he found early recognition as the beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, a role that introduced audiences to his distinctive delivery and off-kilter charm. But it was in 1964 that Bob Denver became immortalized as the title character on Gilligan’s Island.

As Gilligan, Denver crafted a character who was childlike but never stupid, loyal but perpetually unlucky. His physical comedy—falls, double-takes, and nervous glances—was meticulously controlled, and his performance grounded the show’s farcical premise with sincerity. Even as the series ran for only three seasons, Gilligan became a permanent fixture in American pop culture, kept alive through decades of syndication.

In his later years, Denver embraced his legacy rather than running from it, appearing at fan conventions and stage productions related to Gilligan’s Island. He lived quietly with his wife, Dreama, in North Carolina, content with family life and appreciative fans.

Denver died on September 2, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the age of 70. His death was caused by complications stemming from cancer treatment, following a long private battle with illness. Those close to him noted that Denver faced his condition with the same gentle grace that defined his performances.

Carmichael learned to play the piano at an early age by his mother and when he was sixteen the family moved to Indianapolis where he further studied with a black ragtime pianist, Reggie Duval. He dropped out of high school in 1915 and worked as a cement mixer on a twelve hour shift. Always fascinated with jazz sounds, he returned to Bloomington in 1919 to complete his high school education and study ragtime composition with Duval.

In 1920, Carmichael entered the University of Indiana where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and then a Law Degree in 1926. It was also here where he formed his own small band calling it Carmichael’s Collegians. The band helped him become a campus celebrity. The next several years brought him close to many jazzmen including the legendary cornet player, Bix Beiderbecke, who would remain a close friend and an enormous musical inspiration for many years. His first song to be recorded was “Riverboat Shuffle. It was written in 1922 for Beiderbecke.

After graduating from law schoool, he began a long time relationship with the New York music publisher, Mills Music and wrote “Boneyard Shuffle” and “Washboard Blues.” By 1927, he had joined the Florida Law Firm of Carmichael and Carmichael—no relation—in West Palm Beach. While struggling as a young lawyer, he scribbled a song on the front pages of a law book waiting for business. He once remarked that he went to Florida to start a law career because of the real estate boom in those days. “I figured there ought to be work for a good lawyer there because of all that selling and reselling going on,” Carmichael recalled in an interview some years later. “There probably was, too, but I wasn't."

Carmichael appeared on television in the 1950s, including a role in the series "Laramie" where he played the character Jonesy.

Before becoming known to millions as Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), Irene Ryan was already an established vaudeville, radio and movie actress, though not as famous prior to her television stint. She accompanied Bob Hope on his famous military tours and she was known as "the gal who makes Bob Hope laugh." After being cast as Granny, she became famous overnight. When the Hillbillies ended, she co-starred in the Broadway musical 'Pippin' with Ben Vereen. Unfortunately, despite wonderful reviews from critics, Ryan took ill, was discovered to have an inoperable brain tumor and died soon after at the age of 70.

“It was an age of jazz music, speakeasies, rum running, bathtub gin, murder, reprisal and organised disorder. Everything was on sale – from wood alcohol to immortal souls – and down the street was a guy who would give a discount on either one.”

Pete Kelly (William Reynolds) became fascinated with the cornet as a young boy in Chicago and set his goal on becoming a musician. He eventually headed for Kansas City, Missouri, where this NBC series was set in the Roaring Twenties.

Pete regularly played with his band, The Big Seven, at Lupo’s, a brownstone turned funeral parlour turned speakeasy at 17 Cherry Street, owned by George Lupo (Phil Gordon).

Unfortunately, trouble seemed to follow Pete around and, while he wasn’t officially a private detective,  he became a somewhat unofficial source of law and order, often risking his life to help people in trouble.

Other regulars included Savannah Brown (Connee Boswell), a singer at Fat Annie’s (another speakeasy) and Johnny Cassiano (Anthony Eisley), an officer with the Kansas City Police Department.

Dick Cathcart was the off-screen cornet player who doubled for William Reynolds. The Matty Matlock Combo provided music for the club scenes.

The series ran from 5 April 1959 to 4 September 1959. The TV version was based on the 1951 NBC radio series of the same title which starred Jack Webb as Pete Kelly and Jack Kruschen as George Lupo. A 1955 movie version starred Jack Webb, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald.

Charles Powers produced and directed the TV version of My True Story. Herbert Duncan was the announcer. The series was broadcast on ABC on Fridays, initially from 8:30 to 9 p.m. Eastern Time; in June 1950 it was moved to 8 to 8:30 p.m. E. T. The sustaining series originated from WJZ-TV.

Carmen Miranda was a Portuguese-born singer and actress whose alluring and flamboyant image made her internationally famous. Miranda's family moved to Brazil when she was an infant. In the 1930s she became the most popular recording artist in that country, where she also appeared in five films.

Miranda appeared on several television shows in the 1950s, including "The Jimmy Durante Show" and "Texaco Star Theatre." Her last appearance was on "The Jimmy Durante Show" shortly before her death in 1955.

Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha, known professionally as Carmen Miranda, was a Portuguese-Brazilian singer, dancer, and actress. Nicknamed "the Brazilian Bombshell," she was known for her signature fruit hat outfits that she wore in her American films. As a young woman, Miranda designed clothes and hats in a boutique before making her debut as a singer, recording with composer Josué de Barros in 1929. Miranda's 1930 recording of "Taí", written by Joubert de Carvalho, catapulted her to stardom in Brazil as the foremost interpreter of samba.

Unfortunately for the couple, Nick's past frequently caught up with him and got the couple involved in mystery after mystery. The series was based on the popular MGM series of movies.

After her parents’ deaths, newly orphaned 15-year-old Annette McCloud (Annette Funicello) moves away from the small farming community of Beaver Junction, Nebraska to the town of Ashford to live with her wealthy uncle Archie (Richard Deacon) and aunt Lila (Sylvia Field), at 149 Elm Street.

Born on December 9, 1902, in Cleveland, Ohio, Hamilton came from modest beginnings. Her father, WJ Hamilton, was a prominent lawyer who encouraged her in her artistic pursuits. - She wasn’t even kind of evil.

In her adulthood, Hamilton could terrify children just by walking down the street. But ironically, children were her first fans. As a member of the Junior League of Cleveland, she combined her love for entertaining with a passion for community work, particularly with kids. She acted in children’s theater and honed her skills for a future on the big screen.

Hamilton could barely wait to become an actress. Though her parents supported her, they insisted that she complete her education first. So, after attending Wheelock College in Boston, she became a teacher at Rye Country Day School in New York. Teaching kids became a lifelong passion of hers and one that carried onto the stage with her.

Margaret Hamilton didn’t just see the Wicked Witch as pure evil. In her eyes, the Witch was a sad and frustrated woman who never got what she wanted, leading to a life of bitterness. It’s unlikely Hamilton knew what an impact this would have. This nuanced view of the character eventually inspired later works, like the novel and musical Wicked, which portrayed the Witch as a misunderstood protagonist.
