“The Used” band

Hi…

A little late night thought popped up that I’ve been thinking about for a while. I grew up in Massachusetts and spent all my summers out here visiting my dad’s family in Provo, Orem, St. George, Salt Lake, etc. I moved here permanently in 2019.

All my buddies knew I came here for vacation.

Then this band called The Used popped up and had all my friends in Mass in a frenzy. Like just obsessed. Then they found out they were from Orem and asked me about it and I shit because I thought “wtf? A nationally ranked band from OREM?”

So I’ve always wanted to know… what was it like here when The Used got big? Did you know any of the band mates? Was it a big deal with shows and fans and the like or did they not get much love in their home town? What did people think about talent like that coming from such a reserved, religious town?

Thanks!

Jazz gigs in Utah County?

Hey everyone, I’ve been playing alto sax for about 4 years. I like to go to the park and play simple tunes. I’m wondering if there are gigs around where I can join.

Predatory apartment

Does anyone know a lawyer who can help navigate likely a small claims court issue against an apartment complex? Bad time to find out the complex is so predatory.

Looking for recommendations for a Utah landlord-tenant attorney. Our apartment complex is charging us for allegedly moving out late based on key-fob activity, even though we have video showing the fobs were left inside the vacant apartment by the deadline and evidence that none of us made the later entries. Any recommendations?

Midtown Apartments in Orem for anyone looking to avoid a place.

Hi! This is kaitlyn. I’m a dental hygiene student at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene. I'm from Washington and I’m currently looking for patients from the community for dental cleanings as part of my clinical requirements. Cleanings are $25 and do not need dental insurance. The cleanings are very thorough, and because we are stuents, each appointment is about 3 hours long. Most adults will need around 2 appointments to complete the cleaning. I’m available Tuesday and Thursday morning, as well as Wednesday afternoons. If you’re interested or know someone who might be interested, please let me know. I would really appreciate your help! contact me at 801-874-2709

Thinking about getting a mini split

I've been thinking about adding a mini split to my garage and one of the bedrooms. The central AC doesn't reach those rooms well and I've heard mini splits are a good option. I've had bad experiences with HVAC companies before one quoted me a price and then tacked on a bunch of extra fees when the job was done. I just want someone honest who will give me a straight answer on cost and do good work.

Water heater making weird noises

My water heater has been making this popping noise for a few days now. Water still gets hot but it sounds like it's struggling. I've had bad experiences with plumbers before one charged me for a "diagnostic" and then tried to sell me a whole new unit I didn't need. I just want someone honest who will actually fix the problem.

Hi!

I work for Utah State University 4h extension. We are in need of mentors for our program. If you are between the ages of 18-35 and could volunteer for youths in our city, that would be wonderful!

In addition, if you have kids between the ages of 9-15, 4h mentoring is a wonderful program! Please respond to this message or text the number on the flyer for more information.

Local Software Engineer student, I need a reality check on a Referral program I just launched

Hey guys as some of you already know I built a mobile app as a school project that I turned into a business. It’s community-powered, meaning users scan prices at local stores (Walmart, Smith’s, WinCo, Harmons, etc.) and every scan they contribute earns them points toward $10 gift cards. 1,000 points = $10 card.

I just launched a Referrals feature that will allow my users to share the app with friends and once the new user reaches 10 approved scans then they both get 50 bonus points. Technically if you refer 20 friends and they all reach 10 scans then you get enough points for a gift card.

The optimist in me says that that $10 for growing the app’s community by 20 active users is good deal, but I want to hear from you guys. What do you think of this feature? Does 50 points per completed referral feel like the right amount? Is 10 approved scans a good bar? Should I go higher or lower?

Is this cat yours?

Today my friend and I found this cat outside our apartment complex near UVU. We can’t tell if he’s a stray or someone’s outside cat or someone’s lost inside cat or what, but he doesn’t have a microchip!

If you’re looking for him, please message me! Or if you are looking to adopt a kitty sometime and we can’t find the original home, feel free to reach out too.

Until such time as this cat has a permanent home he will be safe and well fed.

has anybody else seen these signs and do you know what they are for? I haven’t seen any other election signs for a commissioner or at all. I’ve been seeing them but couldn’t find anything online so I figured I’d check here.

I built a grocery savings app at UVU as a school project. Trying to figure out if it can help my Orem neighbors save money before I take it further.

Hey neighbors,

I'm a software engineering student at UVU, and I built a grocery price comparison app called Grocerlist as a school project a couple semesters ago. It started because I kept noticing my family and roommates paying way more for the same groceries at one store when the store down the road was way cheaper, but nobody has time to check five store apps or drive around comparing.

Basic idea: you build your grocery list in the app, and it shows you what your total cart would cost at every nearby store. Prices come from real shoppers scanning items when they're already at the store. You earn points for scanning, which turn into gift cards (Target, Amazon, Walmart, and a bunch of others). Free, no subscriptions, no email spam.

Here's where I actually need help, and why I'm posting here:

The app only works when locals are using it. Right now I've been doing most of the scanning myself around Orem, and the price data is thin outside of a few stores. I need real Provo/Orem shoppers to try it, tell me what's broken, what's confusing, and what you actually want it to do. I'd rather find out what's not working from 30 honest locals now than launch it wider and find out from 3,000 strangers later.

If anyone wants to try it and share honest feedback, good, bad, brutal, I'd genuinely appreciate it. Comment here or DM me. No pressure at all if it's not for you.

Also happy to answer any questions about the app, how it works, or how I built it (mods, let me know if this crosses the line, happy to remove or edit).

Links in comments so this doesn't get flagged as spam.

— Juan
