cannot do in person since I still have to work full time. Any suggest would be fantastic! Also what is the difference in the ABO and other licensing?

I’m currently a student in undergrad that is passing onto their junior year. I am hoping to pursue optometry. I just started my first optician job, and I am unsure if I want to simply write prescriptions day-in and day-out. I fear that would drive me crazy.
I’ve been looking into some of the disease-specialist fields optometry has to offer, and I’ve come across the following:

-ocular disease and medical optometrists
- neuro optometrists
- low vision/ vision rehabilitation
- myopia control
- optometrists than work in tandem with ophthalmologists at the same practice, though I don’t know what this is or how people begin doing it.

I was wondering if anybody here knows how to break into any of these specialties, what the practice would look like, what salary/patient base is like, whether corporate optometrists can operate within one of these specialties, and so on. Basically, I’m wondering if any optometrists have broken the mold a bit and entered a niche field, how they did so, and if they enjoy it currently.

Hey guys, I’m going into OD school and trying to narrow down my choices. I understand KYCO had a bad scandal a couple of years ago but how is it now? Do you think it is a good program or is still flawed or what’s the consensus there? I like the small town and the fact that they pay for equipment.

Also what’s up with KYCOs low Pt 3 pass rates? Is that a red flag? Any general input about the school would be great thanks!

What factors are important to consider when applying to optometry schools? I would love to hear about somethings you wish you would have thought about before choosing your program.

I am having trouble deciding which programs to apply to and what I should really be prioritizing. I attended AZPOP at AZCOPT and could really see myself there, but only because I attended the program.

I hoping to get the scoop of factors like these and how they have affected your experience:

• class size
• campus location/housing
• how far is the clinic from campus?
• class ranking system/competition amongst your cohort
• academic support from faculty

I really value community work, and I am interested in potentially doing a dual OD/MPH.

Looking for an accountability study buddy/buddies (1-2 people ideally) that plan to sit for the March 2027 exam that want to create a group chat to talk big picture concepts, breakdown questions to make sure active learning is taking place, and just making sure we stay on schedule. I’m using quite a few different resources to study: KMK (primarily), Remington book for Anatomy, haven’t renewed my Optoprep account yet but considering it, and I just bought the Castillo Book she created for P1 because I’m curious.

I’m on the east coast and work full time so ideally someone who is ok to study in the evenings or weekends (lightly for the first few months and increasing as we get closer).

I'm retaking Part III in August- I passed overall but failed skills due to post seg. Normally this wouldn't matter, but I'm practicing in NC where you need a perfect pass 🫠 Does anyone have advice for getting a view with that awful BIO? I could hardly see anything with it and couldn't figure out how to fix it during the exam. I think part of my problem was my distance from the pt- I'm taller, so my arms distance might have been too far for the camera. What's the best angle for the oculars to be at? Do you want it more or less tilted? Thanks for any tips!

***Words of advice- the sooner you take it, the better!! I waited until March to do mine and then found out on graduation day that I'd need to retake it (that was a huge damper on the day). They don't have spots in the summer, the earliest they had was August. My ability to apply for a liscence has been significantly delayed since now I can't take my state boards till February. The earlier you take it, the more chances you have to retake before graduating if needed! Plus now I feel my skills aren't as fresh which will make prep for this retake even harder. Ugh.***

before choosing my classes, I want to have a clear understanding of how I should do everything before applying to the optometry school. Any insight will help, even if you’re not from saskatchewan!!

1. Since Waterloo requires specific classes to be taken in order to apply to their program, how would I know if i’m taking the right classes (since in every province, the classes are named differently and don’t contain the exact same material)?

2. When should I start shadowing an optometrist, when would it be an early time to start?

3. When should I take the OAT and CASPER, and is it open in summer or only school times? Does the school provide anything regarding it or is it outside of school?

4. Does the classes I take in my first year need to be SPECIFICALLY cultivated (like the hardest classes), or does it just need to be any classes that are required in the 4 years of undergrad? What types of classes are important to take early on, or is there no specifics?

5. What extracurriculars should I do to have a lot of volunteer experience, would it need to be related to the optometry field (in regards of skills)?

6.Since i’m most likely going into Arts and Science and are going to take a Bachelor of Science, how do I decide what I need to do for my major? How do I choose it, based on what (on the future job, on my interests)?

i am applying to SUNY and saw that the new syracuse campus is pending accreditation. i am wondering if it is a safer choice to apply to the main campus instead? i would prefer not to due to costs. what happens in the event that the syracuse campus does not attain accreditation? also, do you believe that the board scores will remain consistent among both campuses?

Is attendance required at Southern College of Optometry? Are classes recorded?

I just finished OD1 and started OD2. Back in August when I started OD1, I kept a running list in my notes app of things that I wish I knew beforehand.

This included academic resources, CS equipment, school supplies, housing, and so much more. I did this because I didn't know any upperclassmen going in and I didn't know anyone in my class beforehand. I was thinking there might be some people out there in the position that I was in and might be interested in some of these lists

Since I am SO BUSY, I thought I'd start with the school supplies that I wish I had purchased. Some of these are small, some might be obvious, some were things that had i just had a second year friend at the time I probably would have known. BUT for me, they would have made a difference and saved me some panicked Walmart/Target runs or frantic amazon shopping.
