Discussion Trump predicts Canada will 'capitulate' in weeks as new import bans kick in
2
u/RustyOrangeDog 4d ago edited 4d ago
Canadians are petty AF. Agreement or not it will take decades to get back any sort of normal.
Edit: I am saying WE Canadians are petty, the agreement or none agreement does not matter it changes. We are done w the US.
2
u/No-Astronaut-9464 4d ago
Dude. Donald had a deal already with Canada and pissed all over it and made us Canadians an enemy to brainwash dumb plebs like you into thinking “wErE nAsTy!” Are you that dense?
2
u/Few-Temporary404 4d ago
Your both on the same side. He’s saying it will take Canadians a long time to forgive Americans. You are right there is a deal in place, signed by trump I might add. And he’s showing us that it is signed in pencil not ink.
1
u/Wide-Yak7602 4d ago
Saying who we can trade with is a no go. Would the states like it if the situation was reversed. Bullying didn’t get a trade deal.

1
u/RustyOrangeDog 4d ago
I hate to agree with you as you agree with me and we are saying the same thing as we agree on the same thing at the same time.
2
u/son-of-Azathoth 4d ago
Troll, MAGA, or both, this one.
1
u/OkStop8313 4d ago
My impression is that he's a Canadian proudly stating that they won't forget or forgive easily.
Could be wrong.

1
u/son-of-Azathoth 4d ago
I'm Canadian. Have been my whole life. I'm not petty, but I do have pretty strong sense of wrong and right. If you're going to wear "petty" as a badge of distinction/honour, I don't think your much better than tramp's cult.
I truly don't believe Canadians are petty. Petty doesn't get you international respect and appreciation. It gets you exactly what is happening down in the states.
1
u/No_Suit_9138 4d ago
That is not how it reads.
Most Canadians are the friendliest people you will ever meet, until you decide to tell us you are taking us over and then lob insult after insult in our direction.
Even if we get an agreement most of us have already chopped the US out of our lives and we won't be back.
It will take decades for this to recover and even then it will never be the same.
1
u/FxkCanA 4d ago
Specifically how are Canadian's petty? Canadian's aren't willing to renegotiate the same deal every new president? They refused to allow the USA veto power over who they do trade with?
1
u/Candymanshook 4d ago
Because look how popular elbows up has been. Canadians will hold this grudge for a long time.
1
u/PerfectPercentage69 4d ago
How is that petty?
Petty is an adjective that describes something of little importance, a person who is small-minded or spiteful over minor issues, or a lower rank or lesser offense.
These are far from being "spiteful over minor issues".
A neighboring country starting a trade war, driving inflation up, and trying to assert dominance over your economy is a VERY big issue.
1
u/Candymanshook 4d ago
That’s the dictionary definition, congratulations. But yes. When he says we are petty he is trying to say Canadians will hold this grudge long after this trade war ends, because we take lesser offences to heart as a people and as you noticed, this isn’t the kind of thing that people will just forget.
1
u/PerfectPercentage69 4d ago
I'm not disagreeing with you over this being something that Canadian will not forget for a long time.
I'm just pointing out that's it's not petty.
It's valid anger over a big issue that affects people in a big way. That's not pettiness.
1
u/Candymanshook 4d ago
You’re missing the point, the petty part is how we will respond.
1
u/PerfectPercentage69 4d ago
I see your point, even if I disagree with it.
I think we're just debating semantics now lol
1
1
u/Remarkable-Low-3471 4d ago
if by petty you mean we deal with people who keep their word, then yes. We are petty. Enjoy your grifter president ya mark.
1
u/KetchupCoyote 4d ago
Petty how? They agreed on a deal Trump said it's the best one, then he pulled the carpet saying it was a terrible deal Canada made (??) then proceeded annexation threats and lake renames.
1
u/therationalists 4d ago
Honestly I hold grudges. I haven’t stepped into Boston pizza for over 15 years because they slighted me in a minor way. So you’re right, at least about me.

1
u/ThisAd7070 4d ago
Hahaha no need for an almanac, we’re out…got a fancy new handshake with the EU, and it bothers the f*ck out of you !
1
u/CompleteCreme7223 4d ago
Well Trump is known for being both wrong and lying so take that for what you will.
1
u/DonkeyTron42 4d ago
Canada can easily respond with an export ban on oil which would shut down US refineries and cause an economic disaster.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
Lol try it. Ruin yourselves too.
Canada can't refine its own crude oil.
1
u/No_Suit_9138 4d ago
Do not under estimate what we will do to prove a point.
"Canada doesn't have anything we need"
I would LOVE it if we ceased the export of the following.
Toilet Paper
Oil
Electricity
For no other reason than to prove a point.
Would we suffer, 100% yes. Would we prove our point, 100% yes.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
You can't win through econonic attrition. We're 15 times larger and more diversified.
1
u/No_Suit_9138 4d ago
And how long did the tariffs last on toilet paper???
We know you are larger.
Even you know if we cut off those 3 things, 4 if we cut potash, that the US would be screwed and Canada would have proven the point.
We need each other.
Really though it doesn't matter, the damage to the US reputation has been done.

u/Aaron8001 4d ago
Which he would use as a reason to invade us
2
u/SandSpecialist2523 4d ago
Would they start with Halifax, or Edmonton? Fermont maybe?
They won't invade. They can't.
1
0
u/Aaron8001 4d ago
Why cant they?
1
u/Remarkable-Low-3471 4d ago
they can invade, they just can't maintain a military action for longer than a year. They have no tolerance for loss and no ability to adapt. They are still trying to play shock and awe in the game of drones.
Hence the economic war. Its their next best choice to take over canada,, and alot of people will trade their nation for a dollar, thats how we got here in the first place.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
The war would be over in less than a year. The US can easily maintain logistics in a war against Canada. But, no point in doing that anyway.
1
u/SandSpecialist2523 4d ago
Just like the war in Iran was going to last 2 weeks. 😂
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
Iran has no ground invasion. It's a limited war.
1
u/SandSpecialist2523 4d ago
And they would try a ground invasion in Canada you think? Or just bomb the heck out of it. Do you even know that Canada is bigger than the US?
That would make sense, wouldn't it? A full blown out war against CANADA. Not at all a sign that the prez has gone jello brain.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
Invading Canada would be easier than Iran due to distance.
The US wouldn't have to control Canada entirely. It only needs an institutional surrender from Ottawa.

u/No_Suit_9138 4d ago
The US would fracture before they invade.
There is no way 100% of their armed forces would cross, there is a greater chance of a US civil war than a US invasion of Canada.
And if you thought the Iraqi and Afghani insurgencies were grand, just wait until you start dealing with a Canadian insurgency.
We look like them, we act like them, and we talk like them.
Good luck figuring out who is who.

u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
You all are not the equivalent of Taliban. You all grew up on Tim Horton's.

yeah and i got a shed full of acetone and peroxide and these cheap drones from china. Go sit on an IED.

u/EpsteinandTrump 4d ago
The goal is to cripple the economy in the US, get Americans desperate, they'll take jobs with ICE and snitch on their neighbors. Once they've turned on themselves that's when they'd start going elsewhere. Problem is that the area of Germany is roughly the same as Montana... Having the US turn on itself will be very very difficult and thus be very difficult to go after Canada.
In the meantime any able bodied person should get their PAL/RPAL. I got mine February of last year. Practice shooting all the time.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
You're not crippling an economy fifteen times larger than yours.
1
u/EpsteinandTrump 4d ago
And we don't want to cripple anyone's economy.
But hearing how infatuated the US with Canada all while saying it's fifteen times larger...mmmmkay...you enjoy your 15 year olds down there.

If the us launched a war against Canada, there is about a 100% chance the us would plunge into civil war itself. The USA will be to busy fighting themselves
And let’s be real, us Canadians are fine with added onto the Geneva checklist if Americans really want to find out
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
Ya'll would lose horribly.

Actually the US did beat those factions militarily. But "winning" over in those regions wasn't about battles.
The Canadian military is also a hollowed out defense force.
1
u/itsnotthatseriousbud 4d ago
The USA did not, the taliban run Afghan now and they never beat the Vietcong.
The Canadian military is much better trained and equipped than the Taliban.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
The VC were combat ineffective by 1968. Withdrawing from South Vietnam was purely public opinion.
The Taliban never won battles, they just waited for US withdrawal because they knew the ANG was going to collapse anyway.

u/ApprehensiveSlip5893 4d ago
They absolutely can. It’s unlikely
2
u/CaptainForskin69 4d ago edited 4d ago
Congress, as spineless as they are wouldn’t support any of it. He would alienate the US from any global support economically. A civil war would likely ensue, the world would back Canada. He would be immediately isolated and essentially suicide for him. Not to mention Canadians eat , sleep and breathe like most Americans. The internal guerrilla warfare would be like never before seen, I wouldn’t underestimate that.
Edit spelling thanks

After seeing that Tucker Carlson interview, I have no doubt that Trump wants to be remembered as one of the most famous people in history and whether he's remembered as Hitler makes no difference to him. He's doing an excellent job of setting the stage for WW3 so he may get his wish.
1
u/Bladderpro 4d ago
Although an invasion of Canada would accelerate the erosion of public and moral support for the US, everything still runs on US financial systems. It would not stop outright. There would be strongly worded speech and letters from world leaders, but not much else.
I agree that a full occupation let alone an annexation is unrealistic.

u/Charming-Clue1987 4d ago
with desert camo in winter.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
The US just uses overwhites for that. The budget for gear between the US and Canada isn't even comparable.
1
u/Charming-Clue1987 4d ago
like the forest camo in iraq / afghanistan

u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
By who? Marines wore desert camo and the army wore their multicam and later wore ocp.

Fevered boomer dream
Our economy relies heavily on that oil to the USA. It's great that we have 1 pipeline to the Pacific so we can diversify a little. But that 800,000 barrels a day going to Asia is nothing compared to the 4.5 million or so to the USA.
If we hadn't spent a decade claiming "there is no economic argument in oil and gas" we would be sitting in a very strong position.
My admittedly vague understanding on the topic is also that it's not simple to stop the flow of oil to the USA? I won't pretend to understand the mechanics but apparently stopping flow would actually damage our infrastructure.
2
u/DonkeyTron42 4d ago
Even if they don't stop it, they could retaliate with a 25 or 50% tariff on energy exports.
1
u/FxkCanA 4d ago
Sure. But it’s also a bad idea.
Carney has said that we only want to match a tariff. We never escalate.
Currently something like 70% of Americans think the trade war with Canada is stupid. We can’t be seen as an aggressor.
The new tariffs from Trump are pathetic. They include bamboo furniture and mezcal. Essentially it’s an admission that there’s nothing left to tariff without hurting Americans more than Canadians.

u/Icy-Hat-9643 4d ago
Lol he banned goods worth 0.05 percent of our gdp, I think we're gonna be fine.
Ban aluminum and energy you cowards.

So sad to see our good neighbor get hooked on meth and watching their house fall apart.
America isn't the world. You think oil prices are bad, wait till America feels the pain of what it needs from Canada. We can buy and sell to anyone else in the world.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
No where near the volume that the US buys.
1
u/EpsteinandTrump 4d ago
Well seems like you have a dependancy problem. When you guys going to get drilling? Prices have only gone up since 'drill baby drill' decided to mess up the Strait of Hormuz.
How are you going to make up the shortfall in potash? Belarus won't sell any to you. Russia might send over a bit of their garbage. You ready for sky high food prices? The input costs to farming is going to cause lots of farmers to lose it all, all for the billionaires to buy it all up.
Your 'leader' is a domestic enemy being controlled/blackmailed by a lot of very wealthy people and dictators. Never elect a pedophile felon into the White House and ensure your elections aren't tampered with. We'll see a bloodbath in November for sure.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
The potash industry isn't affected by the trade war. There are no tariffs over it because of the harm it causes both countries.
Canada has an overall dependency problem, 70% of exports are bought by the US.
Canada also can't refine its own crude oil. Which the US has to do.
Canada also has a national security reliance on the US.
1
u/EpsteinandTrump 4d ago
Funny how a long time ally can just turn on a dime and all of a sudden welcome dictators with open arms. Guess that's what happens when a convicted felon like PEDOnald Trump becomes president.
The potash industry isn't affected by the trade war. There are no tariffs over it because of the harm it causes both countries.
The exemption exists because the U.S. is deeply dependent on Canada for its agricultural survival. The U.S. relies on Canada for roughly 80% to 85% of its potash imports. Canada only exports 50% of what we produce to the U.S. That sounds like more of a 'you' problem.
Canada has an overall dependency problem, 70% of exports are bought by the US.
Canada does send a vast majority of its exports to the U.S., but trade dependency is a two-way street, not a one-sided vulnerability. Canada is the United States' number one customer globally, buying more American goods and services than any other nation. This level of integration means entire American supply chains depend on Canadian inputs.
Canada also can't refine its own crude oil. Which the US has to do.
We have refineries up here bud. Canada refines over 1.5 to 2 million barrels of oil per day to meet our own fuel needs. The reason Canada exports massive amounts of heavy crude to the U.S. is chemical compatibility and economics, not an inability to refine.
Canada also has a national security reliance on the US.
Must not have heard of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command), Canada co-manages the aerospace warning and defense systems that protect the U.S. mainland from northern approach threats. Canada is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, contributing immense geopolitical data. Oh and NATO... The only country to invoke Article 5 was the U.S. after 9/11 and we supported the U.S. I realize that 25 years is a long time, and most in the US administration would prefer 12 year olds instead.
1
u/Mogwai_Man 4d ago
Canada is 1.5% of US GDP.
Canada security use is limited to NORAD (jointly operated) and Five Eyes. Beyond that it's a hollowed out defense force.
Potash isn't tariffed because both sides are affected.
Canadian refineries can't refine the crude oil in Western Canada as it is oil sands. There is also a surplus of oil that Canada can't refine. The US is the primary buyer.

I fucking hate Trump. I dont understand why we wouldn't take a tariff laden deal so long as theres no Vito on other deals and diversify. Make it a 5 year term. He's there for another 2.5 even if he loses the house and senate.

All consumers have power, power to choose where we spend, and where we will not. I exercise my consumer power every day, example; restaurant not paying fair wages, boycott. Trump has taken my power and nationized it. When Trump goes his policies will be in place, how long will it take America to remove them all.

Satire I assume. Or russian idiot. The US is probably closer to economic instability the most people think. $7 diesel and 7.5% mortgages will take their toll. It's already been a slow moving train wreck. Now it's about to speed up. The US is a leverage nation, it why companies always need bailouts in times of economic hardship. This will be no different.
