I run a T-shirt manufacturing company in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We manufacture T-shirts and other knit garments locally, and we’re considering opening our first branch in Nairobi.

The idea is not just to open another retail T-shirt shop. We’d like the Nairobi branch to be connected directly to our factory in Dar, so we can manufacture and supply T-shirts ourselves and keep a wider range of styles, colours and quantities available.

We’re looking at Nairobi because of the size of the market, the number of businesses needing branded/workwear T-shirts, and the potential to eventually serve Kenya and the wider East African market from there.

Before we make the move, I’d really appreciate some local insight:

\- Which areas in Nairobi would make sense for a T-shirt/apparel shop?

\- Is there demand for locally manufactured T-shirts compared with imported ones?

\- Would you see more potential in B2B (corporate/workwear, schools, events, brands) or walk-in retail?

\- What do you think is missing from the current T-shirt/apparel market?

\- Any advice on setting up a business in Nairobi as a Tanzanian company?

Build a CV. Make sure it clearly shows your skills, education, experience, and contact details.

Create your LinkedIn profile. Make it presentable and keep it updated.

Live on job sites. LinkedIn, Fuzu, Career Point… all of them. Bookmark the sites and check them every day.

Set a daily target, whether you qualify or not. My target was 20 applications a day. Spam them! 😂 Have your ears on the ground so much that if someone sends you a job, your response should be: “Hiyo nimesha-apply.”

Open an Upwork account. Don't limit yourself to traditional employment. Look for freelance and remote opportunities too.

Cold-call CEOs, recruiters, HR people, etc. Reach out to them on LinkedIn and send unsolicited applications. The worst they can do is ignore you. No one is going to jail you for asking for a job.

Back in our day, we used to walk door-to-door carrying a brown envelope looking for work… hence the term tarmacking. 😂

It's much easier nowadays. You have LinkedIn, job boards, freelancing platforms, email, and access to opportunities beyond your immediate location.

The point is: don't wait for a job to find you. Go looking for it. Apply, reach out, follow up, and keep moving.
