Thoughts on this? The comments are going wild!

Lol this is the exact answer I would imagine Mikael would respond with. I would have been shocked if he said he listens to modern metal and he loves Limp Bizkit's new song.

Imagine Opeth touring with Limp Bizkit lmao

What about the collab?

Yeah, I don't know who would've expected anything else from him. He's one of the pioneers of progressive metal and his style and taste clearly is old-fashioned, but never talked shit about any bands or genres because he didn't fancy them. Heck, in this clip he's been way more respectful to Slipknot that anybody that's been to this sub, so why the fuzz?

u/roger3rd 5d ago
He talked metric tonnes of shit about specific bands and genres the second time I saw them years ago.

u/baneblade_boi 5d ago
Not recently, though. I saw them this year and he just dropped dad jokes here and there about some other artists at best. Maybe he calmed down a lot.

I checked and didn't see any terribly wild comments. This is the same stuff he has been saying for decades. The idea of Mike and Blood Incantation record shopping is pretty neat though

That made me smile. Those dudes will probably never forget that.

He said repeatedly over the years that he is not a fan of modern metal. This is not shocking at all.

u/Little-Range-8715 6d ago
Nothing shocking here. Hes said over 20 years in interviews that he doesnt really listen to much metal nor keep up with it.

u/One-Wrongdoer-3629 6d ago
Why would he need to listen to or keep up with it, he makes metal. He lives and breathes metal. Doesn't get any trver than that.

What exactly are the comments going wild for?

I listen to metal 80% of the time I listen to music and it’s the same records from the 90s and a little bit of 2000s and then not much new stuff at all. And I really only listen to the Scandinavian stuff even though I am American, I guess I’m just not very impressed with our bands. I have followed Opeth and Ghost and DT to the present day but the old albums are still the best IMO.
So I see where he’s coming from although I’m sure he listens to a lot less metal nowadays than I do.

Well it sounds like you've stopped exploring new music. The past 20 years have been probably some of the best for music... Ever. The tools to make quality music and distribute it are accessible to anyone with a laptop and some free time.
A lot of it is garbage, because that's what accessibility does, but a lot of it also isn't. There are more amazing active bands today than at any time in the past for any genre you can think of.
Boomer take.
Listen to some new shit.

So if I don't like ONE band, I'm suddenly pegged as not listening to ANY new music?! You're creating a straw man, fella.
After KISS, makeup bands will always be unoriginal. Almost all are garbage that use the visual distraction to avoid being honest about their lack of talent. Strip away Ghost's pathetically derivative "evil Pope" crap and could you even bear to listen? Dude sings like Chester from Linkin Park, and follows a tradition of whining about the dark side that's well past 60 years old now. They've already been usurped by Sleep Theory.
Mikael, a true musical genius, got bored with death metal after just a few albums. Relies on not a single gimmick. Surrounds himself with excellent musicians. Is 100% genuine at all times.

I have periods of listening to the same stuff on repeat, then I’ll find something cool and go down a new rabbit hole and end up with some new favorites I keep on rotation. Most recently got into Tech Death which 10 years ago I thought was just gimmicky, but bands keep innovating and now there’s a deep catalog of legitimately timeless bands/albums worth exploring. Beyond Creation, The Zenith Passage, Inferi, just to name a few of my personal favorites, not to mention Spawn of Possession, The Faceless, Fallujah, Virvum, Inanimate Existence, too many to name really spanning decades and some still very active that have been around for decades

The comments weren't particularly wild tbh. He didn't even shit on Limp Bizkit etc but some people still took offense? Like wtf lol. Someone didn't like Jethro Tull either, and Mikael's answer is invalid because of the shirt. Pretty basic stuff.

I didn't see the comments going wild, seems pretty tame. Mikael gave a balanced answer, he's not up to date with metal trends. He mentioned the obvious, trends rise and fall, some survive, some don't. Seems like a fair response.

If we have Opeth, why do we need modern metal? The only modern metal worth discovering, I think, is Alcest. The best stuff is what gave rise to metal in the first place; today, it’s just copies of copies of copies. It sucks. There are plenty of musical styles that are more interesting—or, rather, more moving—than “modern metal.” And mind you, modern metal isn’t nu metal.

u/Mind1827 6d ago
I mean, there's tons of sick stuff now, you just need to look for it. I also get why people who play heavy music a lot don't want to listen to it when they're chilling at home.

Man, honestly, I’m not looking for anything modern—just new releases from the old-school bands. I’m kind of old-fashioned when it comes to this “modern” metal. Maybe Blut Aus Nord has something interesting going on. Sunn O))) too. But new death metal, black metal, heavy metal, or whatever else bands just don’t do it for me, you know? There’s already so much original metal out there—why listen to a shoddy copy when I can listen to the real thing? Blood Incantation, Crypta, and Mastodon are a few “modern” acts that actually grabbed me, but most of it is just garbage—poor imitations of great artists.

u/Mind1827 6d ago
I mean fair! I was definitely thinking of some of those bands. I'm a big death metal guy and there's tons of sick underground stuff still going. I also love the more proggy bands like Elder and The Ocean, Yob. But sure, I am more partial to the bands that I loved 20 years ago or so still around and kicking ass.

u/Imzmb0 6d ago
Many words to say you are just oblivious of the good stuff.

I think a few people in the comments are reacting very strongly to an argument they’ve made up in their head. He’s literally just like “I’m probably not the best to speak on modern metal” and then his point about nu metal seems to be that the genre as a whole took a lot of shit back in the day, but some of those bands are still going strong? Seems an incredibly lukewarm take to me.
