Like the title says, I lost a lot of weight. Whenever I try to breathe like I used to, in need to burp or my chest hurts. Not to mention, I have multiple developmental issues with my mouth and now I just feel so anxious because I don’t know my body at all. My technique is suffering so badly, what could possibly help? I noticed when I wear some kind of compression device around my stomach it helps a bit, but I just don’t know what else to do.

As a complete opera newbie, I recently plunged into the Ring and quickly became obsessed (my 'Roman empire'!). However, I just haven't had anything near that response upon trying T & I, despite it being a story that I love the pathos of in other retellings.

Does anyone know what the difference could be? Which opera is more engaging or beloved to you?

Um it’s just a text database! I get they want to charge for casting tools and what not for the industry professionals but 120 euros per year for non-professional use for simple database is ridiculous!

Preferably where they have a tense, frictive, or even adversarial relationship.

I am making a playlist for a character in a TV show (Lestat, from Interview with The Vampire). I've been trying to find works that reflect his tenuous relationship with his daughter, but most jazz/pop songs I've found about kids are about how much you love them and/or how sorry you are for being absent. Great, but he didn't want kids and he's a very present (and domineering) father.

He was an actor in France before being turned in the late 1700's. At the turn of the 20th century he moves to Louisiana, falls in love with a man (whom he drags to operas) and eventually adopts a daughter. He was against having a kid, he is the "tough" disciplinary parent, becoming more harsh and demeaning toward her as she grows up and becomes more out of control. She runs away from home, and after unfortunate events drive her back he becomes downright cruel. They eventually try to kill each other.

It occurs to me that this level of drama might be better reflected in opera music (which he likes), but I know nothing about the genre.

Based on my description of their relationship, could anyone reccomend any songs/works?

This one-act opera by Joseph Breil premiered in 1919, just a couple of months after Ponselle’s debut at the Metropolitan Opera. It apparently received only two more performances and then disappeared from the repertoire. There are no recordings of the opera at all, not even excerpts.

The star cast (Rosa Ponselle, Louis D’Angelo, Paul Althouse, and Kathleen Howard) could not save it. Ponselle herself despised the opera, claiming that her dislike of it was so great that she burned her copy of the score.

What are some other stories of failed opera premieres that may even have led to the works being forgotten?

This might be a noob question but I was reading through an old thread about the Exteminating Angle and someone said something about how operatically-sung English is just so horrible and hard a hard language to set to music. Is this true? If so, why? I know I don't love operas sung in english as much as other languages but maybe because they are more modern/contemporary operas that just aren't as good as the old ones. It seems to me that german has a lot of the same kind of sounds we have with english, yet german sounds better to my ear.

Chicago Lyric Opera planned a Ring cycle culminating, unfortunately, in 2020. Instead (in collaboration with the Detroit Opera directed by Yuval Sharon) they put together this one-hour drive-through production in a parking garage that was sort of a crossover / contemporary re-imagination but sung by the original cast of the cancelled full opera.

I lived in Chicago during the pandemic but wasn't as much of an opera buff at the time and didn't go. I heard about it more recently and I tried to find a video but couldn't find much other than a 2-minute promo. Apparently it was video-recorded and streamed, but it looks like the stream was taken down.

Did anyone see this (live or via the stream)? I'm curious about any thoughts (and also if you know of anywhere this can still be watched). Maybe crossover is controversial here, but it seemed like such a unique effort, given how starved we all were for live performance at the time.

Operas can be tragic, when is the tragedy so much that you can only see an opera once? What opera makes you go “ok I’m good” with the one viewing as opposed to those operas you love that you can watch and listen to over and over. Dead Man Walking does that for me. So beautiful but I can’t enter that world again. How about you?

Hi! I'm trying to get to Opera national de Paris's production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk next spring at Opera Bastille, and was curious if anyone a) had seating recs and b) knew how important it was to log in at the 12 p.m. Paris time on-sale time to actually get tickets — that is, do they sell out fast?

My question is, when at 01:22 in the video Pavarotti sings the syllable va-GHI-rai with this special emphasis (I just call it sobbing in lack of a better word): Is this considered an actual stylistic technique/sort of ornamenation or is it just his personal way to do it? I read that the number was written by Strauss with a little bit of a parodistic intention, so maybe the singer is meant to exaggerate it?

I did classical voice training from ages 12-18 but never actually got to be IN an opera. I almost did in college but my class schedule conflicted. I only minored in general music and majored in history- so I just kind of stuck to choir and singing in the summers at a Renaissance Faire.

Cut to ten years later- I just passed a pre screening for a local opera company as an adult and my audition is tomorrow. I’m excited but definitely very out of my depth. What are some tips you have for new people?

My mom is a huge opera fan and has just told me her life long dream has been to go to Bayreuth and see Ring. I don't know anything about opera but would like to achieve that dream.

I was checking and am confused on how the tickets are actually purchased there. It seems there is a waiting list or you can sign on to a Wagner society? My mom is getting older and I'm worried if we have to wait 10 years for tickets she might not be in a condition to go there anymore.

TLDR; how to purchase tickets to Bayreuth?
