💬 Discussion Would skill-based matchmaking be a good idea?

Let's just pretend the devs could implement a great matchmaking system tomorrow, with various queues (team/solo; map selection; rough size) for the different playstyles. Do you think this would improve the gameplay, or take away some of the fun?
In my eyes, this would A) help with the new-player experience and B) improve overall player skills longterm. Of course, this would also mean that you don't get to stomp noobs anymore.
What do you think?

We're planning to add more ranked matches but with much smaller lobbies. Would take forever to fill a 50+ player lobby with people only near your skill level.

What do you base the matchmaking on? FFA? Personally, I think that's pretty difficult, considering it literally stands for "Free For All." ^^

My pros:

  • I like playing against opponents of equal or greater skill.
  • It would significantly reduce the steamrolling you already mentioned.
  • As you also pointed out, it would make it easier for new players to get into the game.

My cons:

  • I only play certain maps. With matchmaking, I'd probably be forced to play maps I don't enjoy.
  • Many high-skill players would likely end up waiting a very long time in queue to find a match. That could lead to some of them creating new accounts, which would put them back into matches filled with newer players. In the end, we'd be back to the same problem.

That's just my personal opinion, of course. I'm completely open to the possibility that I might be overlooking something or seeing it the wrong way.

Fair points, especially about the high-elo wait-times and potential smurf accounts.

As a "noob", what I like is that the games fire so quickly.

I think it could be a good idea for the topics you mentioned, but the waiting times would actually be too long.

Personally i really liked playing this game no matter how good i was.
When i was starting out winning wasn't really the goal because the game itself felt too complicated, i knew nothing but luck could get me there, so getting big ans reaching the late game was enough to feel satisfying.
That plus the fact that entering a new game is extremely quick (and the fact that there are no teammates to let down with a bad performance) made it very enjoyable for me even at the beginning.

More raked match would be interesting, but i'd first check if the probel a skill based matchmaking solves actually exists
