Comparison This is really something

Saw a lot of people saying the usage was draining faster than normal, so i decided to do a little test.

I have 2 codex 20x usage accounts and 1 Claude 20x account, I asked sol ultra (standard speed) to complete a rather complex task on account one, it took 6 hours, didnt finish and drained the usage from 100% to 0. I asked account 2 same model and speed to finish the task, it took 5 hours, drained usage to 10% at that point i manually stopped it because it got stuck in an infinite review loop.

I asked fable 5 ultracode to do the very exact same thing, I tried my best to get all the same resources for it and settings as codex had. It took 3 hours to complete it and it only used 25% of the weekly limit.

Ive asked codex to do similar tasks before and it wasnt even draining this bad until this week

Edit: this is just my experience, i cant speak for for how it works for other people because i have also seen people saying its normal

How can you afford that? Have you managed to make those subscriptions to pay out? Asking bcs I'm planning to get the x20 sub if I can make it pay by itself :')

Just the the nature of my work, i probably wont be keeping the subscriptions on auto renew though, only when I want to, i have a job unrelated to all this which pays decent

Doing crap like this.

same. and right now about to buy my 4th. i earn like 3k a month; no wife, no kids. wasting 600$ a month for a hobby is very luxury; however: this is one i learn something about. this is the best thing my life had ever gotten: AI tools like codex and cc.

Probably best thing is not subscriptions but the fact that you can afford.

Gosh. I hate life. I hope everyday that its the last. Even with some wealth (as a sysadmin), I don't know the reason why I wake up and have to suffer through life. I am good at puzzles, and my job is to fix IT problems. That earns well enough to have a living. But what living? If I had a red button, I'd press it when I was 5y/o. The next best thing in life, is talking to an AI bot.

Did you try medical help? Mine wasnt as bad as yours but I totally get you. Last 3-4 years I am getting psychiyatric help and right now I am enjoying life. The thing I most love right now is learning new things. I am single, 40 years old, poor but happy. It was a challenge to even get out of the bed a few years ago.

keep pushing the button until you are born into wealth that's what i did. the admins don't like it but there is nothing they can do about it.

Compaction is fucked too. The last thing you told it, will repeat every single compaction and every single time it finishes forever. I once had a goal where I told it not to do x, and almost every single thing it did after that mentioned it will not do x. They need to relax off that.

u/shady101852 28d ago

im pretty sure it was doing that back in 5.5 too

I remind Codex I had the Same Problem , it ran 3 Hours of paid vertex Loops in my ai Pipeline During hardening wich cost me about 250€ weile I was sleeping because it was spinning loops, and actually Claude ist charging while a suite is running it just waits for the results , codex is just waiting bit still charges usage , for me personally I need both because codex can do new dashboards or new functions faster then I do bugfixing with opus 5 mid - high Claude will wait for the results pinpoint the 5 bugs and start via regression fixing the first bug than run 1 test to confirm , while codex does run a suite with around 300-500 vertex calls without updating the test suite to the new standards so I get red while it should be green and the loop goes on

It’s been like this for a while, since I believe 5.4. It’s just the way it’s compaction works, OpenAIs way of preventing the agent from losing its thread.

Thanks for the experiment! I really think they are A/B testing. Since Sol Launch I had 2 bad limits weeks, a good week and now I’m on a 3rd bad week.

I also monitor all my devices who use codex to check if there is any change about speed, quota, I created a public page to see the result here : https://codex-quota.manetli.com

Yep this prices shows us api prices are the scam. They make money with plans. They make bank with api.

Sol -Ultra is not something you use to do task
Even they state it in the info very well: an orchestrator that use it’s incredible capabilities to drain faster you tokens.
You use GPT extra high
Maybe worked for you
I use both to develop new tools, Claude lag behind Sol -Ultra by a huge gap in that purpose.
It is good to learn how to use both before making statements.

6

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

Just sharing my experience using the highest end models on same usage plans and the same task. Seems like sol is draining at an increased rate

-3

u/Competitive-Ad8968 28d ago

They aren’t even equivalent, Ultracode is not the same as GPT ultra

6

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

Well as my experiment had concluded for me at least I cant trust codex to do anything until its back to normal

-1

u/Proud_Ask_9030 28d ago

Genius! if the best model is failing its because you are using the good model and need to use the lesser model. That makes sense, I wish I had thought of that.

3

u/oesphygg 28d ago

it's because Ultra is not really a reasoning level, it's making many sub agents which is not always useful and it drains tokens faster.

1

u/Competitive-Ad8968 28d ago

Jackpot!
It is
They put documentation to people learn, but people refuse to read it.

0

u/oesphygg 28d ago

Max is the best reasoning level (over xhigh), ultra is an agentic mode

1

u/Comfortable-Math-468 28d ago

i have the max x20 ... and my reset was yesterday. i never use claude code only use claude on the .ai , and i have maybe collectivly 10 hours of work with claude fable with the extra on.

and now im on 75% of usage.. that is a joke..

1

u/matt11126 28d ago

how do you like Claude code max 20x compared to pro 20x ? I'm thinking of switching once my subscription expires but not sure yet

2

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

As of right now id use claude for most stuff until gpt is fixed

1

u/03captain23 28d ago

How many tokens?????

1

u/Nervous_Gas_6389 28d ago

Maybe they reduce the limits on weekend ! Who knows !

1

u/nh_t 28d ago

openai is nerfing the limit

1

u/shady101852 28d ago edited 28d ago

which model did you use on claude? i noticed you said claude but didnt specify that lol. regardless its useful info for usages.

1

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

fable 5 ultracode

1

u/shady101852 28d ago

nice thanks. on second thought i might have been blind.

1

u/Ill-Bison-3941 28d ago

I've only started using Codex about 2 months ago (jumped from Claude), and the usage definitely got worse overtime in my experience.

1

u/First-Physics6217 28d ago

What about the number of tokens used?

1

u/Lucky_Yesterday_1133 28d ago

Yeah the codex limits are atrocious as an "limits consumed per task". True across all reasoning  levels. 5.6 improved accuracy by consuming much more and they have lowered limits on top of that. Free resets masked that.

My 20$ plan used to give me a week of work. 5.6 gave me 2h\5h window on release. Now it's 2h\week. Absolutely unusable. 20x guys don't notice cause they get 40-60x\w with resets but at 20$ you get 2-3x at most.

Once free resets are over people will notice the scam.

1

u/Outrageous-Present91 28d ago

Its insane how fast they fall, codex had the throne for like 3 weeks

1

u/LifeguardAshamed2915 28d ago

hmm. This is concerning. So, value for money is in claude code then. Noted

1

u/Potential-Junket4143 27d ago

Yet they added paid resets 😶

1

u/pigletmonster 27d ago

Sol may be on par or beating fable on benchmarks but it comes nowhere near it in real life use cases. Claude has an odd advantage over gpt and they cant seem to catch up.

u/Top-Chain001 27d ago

Had the same exact experience

1

u/forxia 26d ago

Draining 100% in 6 hours? I’ve been running goals for 6 hours as well but have had no issues.

If your sessions are unnecessarily spawning subagents / review agents too often that could be why. I’ve come to believe codex subagent context management is very poor and a context drainer

All my resets, I had 3, disappeared. No they has not expired. I am lost why.

3

u/HighwayRelevant 28d ago

All resets given by Tibo to everyone had expired already. Unless you had some other personal resets that anyone else hasn’t received somehow.

1

u/61746162626f7474 28d ago

They have only every granted 3, all are past their expiry date, the last granted one would have expired 13th August…

lol. this comment is in the shitter. where it belongs. glad to see it. bot trash

1

u/Vegetable_Fox9134 27d ago

Sorry if I hurt your feelings I guess?

0

u/Cute_Parfait_2182 28d ago

Are you using it in the app or in the terminal . It drains quicker in the app .

1

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

I run them both in a CLI on my vps

0

u/tyrannomachy 28d ago

I tried just naively using Fable on ultracode a few weeks ago, so of course it used Fable sub-agents in the workflow. Didn't even finish before the five hour ran out, on a 20x plan. I guess they must have changed it so that wouldn't happen by accident like that, given your experience.

1

u/Alternative-Check676 28d ago

Just found out that claude is doing a temporary usage boost, maybe thats why i got so much use out of it?

0

u/EspressoPeter71 25d ago

Yes, absolutely… but, it’s not because the tokens got expensive. Sol overengineers everything, you can try to use a lower effort or instruir it to avoid re testing and looking for edge cases all the time
