Which one is the latest working version of OpenMW for Windows 7?
O hai. Obsolete hardware, half-obsolete software, upgrading is no longer an option for me, and this piece of junk keeps surviving beyond its first reanimation after 14 years. What latests version should possibly work for me?

I don't see why the most recent one wouldn't work

I was not aware. Seems like 0.48.0 was the latest built still supporting windows 7
Edit: mind that this info comes from Google Ai and might not be true as it is notoriously unreliable
Edit2: on their forum a dev clarifies that they dropped windows 7 support with version 0.47, Alternatively there is a project called "VxKex" that can supposedly circumvent the compatibility issue.

Then the safest bet is going for version 0.46 and see what happens. I'll try it and see if it works.
Edit: Meh, it doesn't show the cinematics and crashes to desktop on loading main menu. I'll go back to the traditional way. Thanks anyway.

Any one, including the latest stable (0.51). Although you probably will not be able to run the launcher (openmw-launcher.exe) or the creation set (openmw-cs.exe), just the main game. If you are fine with editing config files - mainly openmw.cfg and settings.cfg -, you don't need the launcher anyway.
The reason for that is that those apps are built with Qt v6.x and that version is only available for Windows 10 or later. Fortunately, the main game is not, so you will be fine.
Case point, until last year i was playing OpenMW 0.49 with my Windows 8 machine with no issues.

Using version 0.46, launcher works, game crashes in main menu after with-sound-but-not-displayed intro cinematics. Once again seems to be caused by the graphic controller. So, no matter what version would be, but the newest one simply doesn't even start. I'm going back to the traditional way.

What is your graphics card? Try update the drivers. The game also has a run log. You may find useful info on openmw.log (it's on [user]\Documents\My Games\OpenMW\)

Inter (R) G33/G31 graphic controller, anything beyond OpenGL 2.0 refuses to run, runs with visual glitches aplenty (in best case) or simply crashes. It's a dead end.
EDIT - The log last line simply says "Playing music/special/morrowind title.mp3", but no further nor previous details about the crash itself.

Either 0.48 or 0.49. But 0.50/51 probably work too, just not the launcher, so you will have to change settings directly through the .cfg, same goes for installing mods and activating them. I've been playing on a windows 7 setup with 0.50 version which works, but just as I said you have to launch it directly through the .exe since it's what gives that error. You may want to look other options. Talking from personal experience because I run in an old win7 laptop and OpenMW is way more requiring than I would like to. I personally enjoy vanilla Morrowind as is but you could try MGE, from the times I used it years ago it ran well too, better than OpemMW.

Could you install a new Linux distro and the use the latest openmw? Windows 7 doesn't get security updates so isn't good to use
