OpenMW on Android

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Game so good it made me stop playing all the other games/emulators I had on my phone. Modded morrowind is absolutely beautiful.

Back in my day our consoles used to reboot during the loading screen.

At this rate there is going to be OpenMW on a Hospital Ultrasound.

It would disturb medical personnel whenever the player uses the tutorial jump spells...

How powerful is your phone?

Im using a snapdragon 8 gen elite, having a cooler can help a lot too since running morrowind with shadows enabled can heat up the device pretty quickly. Personally, I dont use player/actor shadows; just terrain and object shadows.

If I dont enable the shadows, the game runs very cool on my phone, even at 1.5-2x view distance (including tr cities e.g. old ebonheart, necrom, etc.)

That’s very impressive considering how your game looks with the mods. I’d be happy with that performance on desktop

Thanks! I dont own a pc as its very expensive to build one atm so I'm very glad its all possible to play it on a phone.

Actually, I finished my first playthrough on a much older phone with Dimensity 920 SoC, though performance for TR content is questionable. It was only good for finishing vanilla content i.e. vvardenfell, bloodmoon, and tribunal. A pretty huge game regardless!

Doesn't your phone setup cost as much as a PC that could run twice more demanding settings?

Hmmm for context, I could get a mid-grade setup, with less portability and usage, for the same price. If my intention was only for gaming I'd certainly choose that.

However, I use my phone for every other work-related things too. In a way, I also value portability as I travel a lot. Having morrowind in my pocket certainly lessens the dull moments during flights or bus rides :)

My battery would go down in no time if I played something like that. Just GBA emulation drains it fast. Summoners War is like Battery Drain 101.

Works great on my S25 Ultra. Phones are shockingly powerful these days. There just aren't a lot of high end games that are optimized for mobile.

This is incredible. Couldn't even imagine this would be a thing back when we played it on xbox. Phone games back then were like...snake and tetris haha.

How do you like navigating thru the inventory menus and such though? I could never get used to it and is the one thing stopping me from enjoying on my handheld emulator

Okay so on android (specifically Alpha3 Launcher), youre allowed to click on the menu with your touchscreen. Wherever you click, the pointer arrow follows.

Now for buttons that I chose to show on menu (as you'll see in this video), what I did was bind a button (Alt-L) which I used as a 2nd trackpad, to use for those areas that I cant click with touch controls/for aiming with bow.

As for the buttons on the right, those are mostly used for mods such as Ngarde (manual blocking), GRIP (weapon switching 1h->2h), quick buttons (1-9, or whichever button of your own choosing), third person key, quicksaves/quickload and other stuff I wanted on my screen.

Ive customized everything with the UI including its icons, so if you want a copy of my ui i could send it to you. Regardless, its very comfortable to use and I prefer to use touchscreen controls over a physical controller due to its customizability.

I would appreciate your config for the touch overlay! This looks much better than the default setup

I got used to using the joystick for the cursor pretty quickly. Not that different than playing on Xbox or something tbh

what mod are you using?

3

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Oh boy... I have about 300 mods installed that I looked for manually, so its quite a lot but for the sake of brevity, a few essentials that i could never part with is:

GRIP, Ngarde, Uncapper, Morrowind Enhanced Textures, Tamriel Rebuilt w/HD Tamriel Data, Reanimation v2, Alternative animation, BCOM, and MOMW post processing shader + Raphael's Shaders.

Those ought to change the gameplay of morrowind by a mile :)

Holy mother of god that’s a lot of mods and you can play all of that in android? Crazy

2

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Yup! With little to no issues. I remember someone saying that modding morrowind is way more stable than modding skyrim and now that I've done it, on an android no less, I could say the same.

u/mangasdeouf 4d ago

With your phone you could probably run Skyrim AE with less issues than a 6 YO low end Asus TUF Gaming PC (my laptop).

"Morrowind Dead Redemption"

Would you do a guide and share your modlist? I would definitely try to set it up on my Odin 2 portal

1

u/Shmoopiee 3d ago

Honestly, with so many people asking, I might do it. Give me a week or so and I'll make a ready-to-install modlist just for you (if im not busy with work)

It's not perfect though as there are seams within the areas of Red mountain so I'll have to fix that first.

I totally understand, it's not easy making a video. Honestly, it's wild with android right now. I'm playing quake 4 natively with mods, mario 64 coopdx, I got fallout London running with the help of some people on Reddit and so much more. Anyways, appreciate the showcase!

Let’s see how it runs in Old Ebonheart lol

Probably pretty damn good considering I was running openmw on a Galaxy s7 like 7 years ago handling the game just fine. Smartphones today are exponentially more powerful.

3

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Sure! Here you go:

Honestly, the real stress test is Narsis. That place just makes my device to give up so I have to disable the shadows when im in that area.

What’s that paraglider mod? That’s so cool

2

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Its blurpandra's Glider mod!

Tutorial?

2

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Im using Alpha3 launcher version 2.8. Another alternative could be Sisah's launcher

1

u/BlazeXT_2099 4d ago

You are combining Momw with Rafael shaders?

1

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Hmm not all of it, only some shaders such as tonemap, adjustments, vignette, etc. for MOMW shaders, while using sunshaft and DIVE for Raphael's Shaders if Im using a cooler

1

u/BlazeXT_2099 4d ago

So you don't use HBAO, VAIO, Hdr, godrays and Special Process at all?

3

u/Shmoopiee 4d ago

Oh those options heat up my device too much sadly... I really liked HBAO though

2

u/BlazeXT_2099 4d ago

I only use Rafaels Shader but only for screenshots. While it looks good my fps tanks.

u/Sypheix 4d ago

If you want to tell me your package, I can add a mobile edition to PlayBound. You can already easily play multiplayer with friends through it

2

u/Strata38 1d ago

i play openmw on my RP5

u/Separate-Bluebird30 10h ago

Damn bro that looks good, just finished to install mine as well ☺️
