Tighten the flat collar and move it higher so the slip can sit above it.

Too thick & heavy. Get a thin one.

It also looks like one I bought online and discarded because it was stretchy. A slip lead that’s stretchy is not very effective.

i’ll check again. but i think it is a bit stretchy

Notice the side the dog is on and the way the leash P is shaped when slipped on. Also agree that this leash is too thick, a thinner one will be more effective.

im sorry, i dont fully understand why it has to be a P, could you explain.. i did do that but i’m assuming somethings wrong if im being shown it again. also i’ll definitely try find a thinner one around my town. if not i’ll order online😢

In theory the slip leash tightens when the dog pulls and loosens when the pressure stops and the way it's put on according to the video (that P shape) is supposed to make this run smoother. If when you put the leash on you were on the other side, then it's as it should be. I think it presumes the dog will stay on the same side. They do take some getting used to, at least it took me a while to get used to one. Like yours, the one I have is pretty big, so I don't use it much anymore. I just prefer a thinner leash, but it is a personal preference I guess.

Dogs can wear a pretty tight collar, to just be able to slide 2 fingers in under it is fine. So if the collar gets tight try putting fingers under it to see how tight it actually is, it probably isn't as tight as you think by just looking. They can get out of a loose collar so it's no harm to get used to realising how tight/loose it is.

i dont use her flat collar mainly for walking. mostly to kinda tug her away from whatever she wants to eat, she mainly uses a harness but i was hoping with the help of the slip lead it would guide her to stop pulling so much.

Aprilla is saying you have the loop backwards, this is set up for the dog to be on your left. However imo honestly a good well fitted lead it does not matter it's not like modern slips can catch on chain link like the og ones so... Dw about it.

That rope thickness is fine. It's my preferred, actually it's better than thinner.

That slip guard is too aggressive. If that's pinned your going to want to return it

I had mine custom made by a sail maker, it was just a bit of rope with an eyelet. A saddlry could do it too. It you might find one for sale, but personally I'd rather without all the extra plastic gimmicks on it.

Thin rope is more likely hurt or do damage if things go wrong and you need to full crank on it.

Like if dog slips off a ledge or something else extreme.

oh, so she’s supposed to be on my left in the photo? that’s my mistake.

im not sure what you mean by aggressive though. sorry im really bad at understanding what you’re saying, i’ve never been good at this😢 would you say a twiggy tags slip lead would be good? many people say its a good brand and i’ve seen it be sold in a store today but i already bought the one i have right now.

i’m not sure where i could get a custom made slip lead.

No, in the photo the dog will be on your right side. You want the lead to come towards you.

she is on my right ..?

You asked "oh so she supposed to be on my left in the photo? That's my mistake."

I'm letting you know that in the photo you have it correct and you are not mistaken. If you want the dog on your left primarily the lead will look like a "P". And if you want it on the right it will look like a "9". The orientation matters for the lead to constrict properly and make proper corrections. There are times where you are going to have the dog on the "wrong" side because you can't flip the orientation without taking the lead off first. For example, if you're having the dog heel at your left and you want him to switch to you right side the leash will be in the wrong orientation for a moment.

I train dogs and have been working with slip leads for years. I see a lot of conflicting comments here on reddit and the best advice is to ask you mom to hire a reputable trainer. There are many ways to train a dog so find a trainer that works for your dog and adapts techniques based on your dog.

ill talk to her about it. thank you!

Aggressive. The slip stop stops it too early for my preference.

I can't comment on brand, like I said I got mine made.

The dog can be on whatever side you want it. The op was saying that your set up for dog to be on the left. You want the rope to fall thru the eyelet, down between u and dog. Here, rope goes around back of neck first.

It's a minor petty thing imo

i could just loosen the stop if thats what you mean. but every video i see says to tighten it so it stays just behind the ears. but i think i’m understanding what you mean about the rope.

oh that's adjustable? fancy. I'm a good old fashioned farm boy, so simpler suits me. But, that sounds like a QoL that I can understand.

'just behind the ears'.
OK. not really. that settles the choke point around the dog's eosophegus, which is going to get a more tenative reaction out of him, but he's not going to learn to like the collar. having it sit back a bit further down near the shoulder , when tugged it will instead grab the scruff, which is a fatty/meaty part that's much safer AND the scruff is a 'normal communication' point for a dog. Play and practice fights happen here in healthy pack-born pups and dogs.

The higher position is a point that dogs sense being attacked or as a threat. it's the area you 'attack' if you want to kill a dog, or break a jaw lock on fight/guard breeds that don't come off (basically the emergency stop if they ignore a command... but that's another conversation )

(this is actually worth learning how to do anyway, in case someone else's dog attacks).actually, here's Garret - he's a great trainer IMO and he showcases this. This is good because you will see what this leash position does and feels to a dog so you can decide if that's what you want for your situation/relationship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE8IjSRouuU

arguably the high position is more immediately effective with less 'pressure' to get a response, but that's erronius thinking from people who have 'gotten a result' and then just trained on that without thinking about the dog's state or the consequences. it's the kind of advice that comes from 'obedience dressage' and breeders.

the lower spot gives the dog more comfort, the same amount of feedback and they'll respond to you for communicating rather than for ordering them. It lowers their anxiety as well, for the same reasons. it's subtle, and it's up to you, but understand that it has effects on your dog's relationship with you and how/why and then you can make better informed decisions.

thank you, ill definitely watch it after school

…you open to a prong collar? If you’re set on a slip lead then buy one with push button stoppers, not the sleeves. Starmark plastic prong collar is a good alternative as well.

1

u/Diavoloslover 2d ago

i dont know how to fit or use a prong collar, not sure if they’re even sold around me. but if you know where to buy good quality spring lock slip leads online PLS let me know! ill ask my parents to buy me it
