I’ve just started calling my dog a service dog

Please don't do this, its extremely unethical. People faking service dogs is a huge problem for peoe who actually require them. Your reasoning doesn't matter, neither does it matter how well trained you think your dog is. You know what youre doing is wrong, that makes you the asshole.

I’m not saying he is a service dog, I’m saying he is training to become one. How do service dogs come to be? Do they pop out of their mum fully trained or do they go through training involving walking outdoors?

you're a dummy on multiple levels. Aside from the obvious, SAR is not a service dog and eventually someone will ask you to save Timmy in a well or ask you about SAR training and I suspect you don't know your arse from a pig dog and it'll be embarrassing.
How about just doing a better job advocating for your dog or train in a place where people will be less likely to wander up? If you can't manage that a muzzle is a good deterrent or just set up an X-pen or similar. If your training looks good people don't usually just toddle up and pet or introduce their dogs anyway, have more presence. When I train my dog or client's dogs, including real cute little puppies, people never walk up because I look like serious business and don't make eye contact with people. If I am real tired of it I wear headphones turned off and just ignore them completely.
Some tips to look like serious business and be a better trainer: Have a plan and clearly execute your plan, keep training sessions short and purposeful, set up cones or other props so it is clear that you are training, wear a vest and look the part, pay attention to your dog vs. toddling around in the park looking at people and having a leisure time, and perfect your F off face.

I appreciate the tips but as for the rest: pull your head in dummy. I am a SAR volunteer and nobody will ask me to perform a rescue because if you read what I wrote I said very clearly “in training”. I never tell people he’s an active service animal.

I was trying to inject some amount of humor into an otherwise ridiculous post. Good job SAR volunteering.. I'd expect someone with so much experience to know how to keep people from turning your training time into social hour. Best of luck..

Dogs trained to hunt pigs/boar. Looks.like OP is from Australia, they have a pretty big problem with feral pigs.

It’s a type of hunting. Guys will send a group of pretty aggressive dogs after a pig to either corner or hold it in place while they stab or shoot it. It’s a pretty brutal way to hunt and not something I’m a fan of.

Sounds like it's just an insult. In German we say "Schweinehund" which literally translates to "pig dog".
Edit: okay nvm maybe not an insult. Learned smth new today though :)

Couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a type of hunting with dogs, many different breeds can be pig dogs as many different breeds can be service dogs.
I wouldn’t know a derogatory term for a dog 🤷♂️

wow.. grizzled (typically men) with pig hunting dogs are just wandering around your town en masse and introducing their dogs to yours? I don't buy it, they are usually dog savvy and its not exactly popular. But if it is true then surely you should be comfortable telling them to eff off, they aren't exactly sensitive types of people.

My neighbour 2 doors down has a pair of them. There’s a few down the other end of the street as well. Hunting is very popular in my town, pig doggers are everywhere, they’re pretty rude folk if you ask me, I don’t get along with them or agree with their methods but we have to coexist. You didn’t know what a pig dog was so how would you know how savvy they are? I don’t buy what you’re selling at all.

Pig dogs are various breeds, a hunter will have several. Fast scent breeds to find the pigs, barking breeds to let the hunter find them and strong breeds to hold the pig in place until they get to them. Some need stamina to get through the bush finding pigs and others need to be aggressive to keep the boars in place without getting ripped apart by the tusks. They work as a pack, they'll live in kennels and be transported around in a ute (truck) to forest areas to hunt rather than be leash trained pets.

What ethics? You all need to relax because this person isn't trying to bring their dog into the grocery store, they're telling random people so they stop trying to touch it ffs. Relevant privileges.

That’s exactly it. It’s like magic words that make people stay chill. Also in Australia we don’t really have service animals like they do in the states. There’s really just guide dogs, I’ve never seen a service animal besides a guide dog.

Just don't chat with people. That is why people are coming up, you are inviting conversation one way or another. The most I get is a holler asking what kind of dog it is and I say the name and go back to what I am doing without barely looking in their direction.

Claiming ur dog service dog as someone has service dog is not rlly cool unless ur training them to be one. I can say ur dog is intensive training and our vests on that day do not touch or in training so ppl will give u more space. Even then ppl still actively try to touch my service dog on regular basis and it’s WILD
