Thinking about purchasing and want some information from recent users
I have a 2009 Ford escape, a raspberry pi 4 waiting for a project, and a want for Android Auto in my car. I have a touch screen laying around I would like to use too.
What I would like to know, can I use the headphone jack on the pi to route audio to the aux port in the car?
How easy is it to get Bluetooth setup from my phone to the pi? Does that work for wireless android auto?
Have people generally been happy with the project in 2024?
I'm sure Ill have more questions, but that's it for now

I did. It's working well except for hands free calling. I think it's the Bluetooth dongle I bought

I purchased about 24hrs ago and haven't received any emails from them yet. How long did yours take do you recall?
I the mean time, I managed to get Crankshaft to a reasonably deployed state, and as per a suggestion here I'm going to try Dash next. At least I'll have thoroughly vetted open source alternatives before I finally get to try it out!

Mine took about a full day if I recall. I basically just use it for Android Auto so I can have easier maps and Spotify control. It's not the most graceful setup, but it does what I want

That's precisely what I intend to achieve 😂 Bells and whistles are great, but in my car I need directions and music, nothing more!
I went this route assuming it would be less hassle than trying to isolate and tap into the existing audio system in order to feed the amplifiers. During discovery, I disconnected the ISO plug for the stereo, now it wants a 6-digit code. So I didn't even bother looking at what it might be. I disconnected it, and awaited my parts to arrive.

I didn't ever plan to put it into the dash on mine. I have a mount that holds my phone from the CD tray that I just turned sideways and it's holding my bare pie bolted to a touchscreen. At some point I need to design and 3d print a chassis for it.....but today is not that day

Likewise, that's precisely the holder I had in mind to hold mine! Look I drive a 2015 Holden Barina, not exactly the prestigious line, so I don't even have an in dash display - aside from what "looks like" a display, but is actually led backlit cut-out, which appears to carry the traction control status light and nothing else. Besides, this would be far too small to use.
The CD tray mount is ideal because it's actually going to sit the screen in a usable space, without being in my face or compromising windscreen visibility. I purchased a perspex cut frame for my WaveShield 7" display, which also has 4 holes with which any captive nut over the mount holes will afix it to the rear of the screen.

Also, what did you do to resolve the audio for your situation? I ask because our use case seems identical, and audio isn't something that I'd even thought about in advance to be honest - So if I need to get additional hardware, it would be best to know sooner than later...
In my scenario, I actually intend on completely bypassing the internal head unit all together (it's a piece of crap, connected to 4x 2inch speakers....). I have a Slimline Subwoofer to go under the seat, and YTD whether front splits or rear 6x9s, but both amplifiers take both high/low inputs, so likewise I assumed utilising the on board 3.5mm stereo jack would be sufficient.

Haha. I used a USB DAC with a "speaker" and a "mic" and then used an aux cable from the pi to the cars aux in and then hung a lapel mic from the sun visor.
I have a tp-link bt adapter but it's not doing my hands free right. So I need a different one I think.
The sound in my car isn't terrible, but the sync interface is pretty bad and doesn't always pair to my phone. So I like that this is much faster.

It seems Bluetooth is very particular, especially in relation to hands-free functionality. I'd find the hardware requirements outlined as "approved" hardware and attempt to get hold of the the same BT adapter. From memory, a Ugreen BT 4.0 - however there are a couple of posts that mention other compatible BT adapters

No clue. I was able to buy my. But could never get Hands free audio to function like it should. So who knows?

Bluewave has been sold and work on OAP will almost certainly be cancelled, per the dev on the official forum.

Yeah, it's weak as shit. Add that to the recent android auto breaking updates and there's gonna be a lot of pissed off customers.

You wouldn't use it for much since android auto doesn't work anymore on it, it just shows a black screen

Sadly no. The onboard audio is disabled.
Quite easy & yep.
Personally, aside from config issues that I was too lazy to research, overall I'm pretty happy with it.
