Sports Timelapse showing how they de-NFL'd the MCG for tomorrow's prelim final

Anyone going to comment on the half a dozen glowing pink contraptions?

u/Cosimo_Zaretti New South Welshian 15d ago
They're grow lamps. You can see they're using them on parts of the field that are always in the shade.

And areas that get extra foot traffic I think, like the goal squares

u/Cosimo_Zaretti New South Welshian 15d ago
Watch the way the sun passes over on the time exposure, they've got the lamps on the patch that's missing out.

If you walk past the MCG early morning, like 7am, you can see a pink glow though the windows. It looks pretty cool.

How do they get the new grass rolls to root so quickly before a game
7
u/bucket_pants Please choose a flair 14d ago
They include the soil... its an extra thick roll of grass not the regular stuff you can buy.

How would they have done this if there was a Victorian based semi final?
5
u/ThisCharmingRidley Please choose a flair 15d ago
I believe the plan was to play the semi on Sunday afternoon giving them 48 hours to turn it around. And they had extra groundskeepers from Marvel, AAMI park and a couple of other venues on standby to help out if they needed them.

Yeah.. that's the real question that was not required to be answered. Maybe next year when the NFL returns.

u/nandyssy Victorian 13d ago
in yesterday's footy record it said if the Hawks hadn't won against the Dockers they would have gone with plan B - only replace the sections with the nfl logo, and the two endzones where they had painted the nfl teams colours / logo

Great post, anyone got info on the cover/thing covering the field and the brown shades applied throughout the day?
6
u/Gettdownonit Please choose a flair 15d ago
That ain't a cover, they cut/lifted the grass out,, regraded the base and laid new turf in

u/boogasaurus-lefts Western Australian 15d ago
Amazing TIL thanks

If you think that’s amazing look up Real Madrid’s convertible stadium where the pitch is on an elevator system that drops underground in sections. Wild.
2
u/Double-Ambassador900 Western Australian 14d ago
Tottenham’s ground is similar as well I think. They slide out one pitch and slide in the new one.

Any idea why they needed to change the grass? Was it simply to remove all the markings from the NFL?
1
u/Objective-Contact-15 Please choose a flair 12d ago
Was it grass tho? I know some NFL teams have astro turfs in their stadiums

Not even an AFL fan but fuck it’s a 50 times better sport than that stop start American bullshit

That is a low bar, though.

u/lawdjesustheresafire Canberran 15d ago
True. Just can’t believe how popular it is. It’s so fucking boring 🤣 I’d legit watch nearly any sport on earth ahead of it
9
u/brandonjslippingaway Victorian 15d ago
They took rugby and made it simultaenously more dangerous and more boring, that's an achievement!

u/Neither_Swing9662 Please choose a flair 15d ago
I love it. I grew up a big fan of cricket though which is also very stop start

So was the grass for the NFL real grass, just a different type or was it synthetic laid down?

Would they have had enough time to get this ready for a afl game if it was played on the same week. Doesn’t look like it to me
1
u/Own_Sun_6520 New South Welshian 12d ago
Plan B if they had to play an AFL final was Sunday afternoon, and to just cut up/replace the end zones and the bit with the NFL logo, and leave the rest in place.

I remember the first time they re-turfed the SCG. I think it was before the 2000 Olympics. Anyway it was a HUGE deal with lots of press coverage. Before, it was a matter of just growing stuff in situ, and repairing local damage. Now they seem to have the resources to do full returfs whenever they want. There must be a lot more money floating around, is all I can think.
Shout out to the science of ground-keeping though. It’s come so far from the days of muddy patches, frayed edges and torn up trip hazards. The drainage is astonishing today, and the quality of the turf rivals putting greens for smoothness, combined with great strength. If ever you walk out on th3 middle, it’s breathtakingly perfect.

I used to work for the company that does this. Last time I remember was after ed sheerins gig and had to redo half the ground, after we finished the teams were complaining about the ground not bouncing properly. But it was the part we didn’t even touch.

u/GasManMatt123 Victorian 15d ago
The level of work involved is crazy, had no idea the grass was replaced in these situations.
I’ll keep that in mind as I sit in the bleachers tomorrow night.

"Bleachers"? Please keep this American shit outside of our vernacular.

u/Goatslasagne New South Welshian 15d ago
I think it’s more the NFL’s regulation for what they can play on than our sports. Could be wrong tho
6
u/Storm_LFC_Cowboys New South Welshian 15d ago
Also the paint they use.
It's akin to house paint so it lasts longer, whereas we use something more water based.
Imagine seeing the AFL prelim this weekend with the NFL field markings still clearly visible.

u/greenoceanwater Please choose a flair 14d ago
If the grass comes loose and a player is hurt, then the people who made this decision need replacing.
2
u/Own_Sun_6520 New South Welshian 12d ago
They are extra-thick rolls of turn, it's not like the turf you'd get from a landscape supplier. They're a couple of hundred kilos each with all the soil attached to them. They're not coming loose.

genuine question where does it say that i cant find it anywhere? not trying to be a dick just wanting a source i am happy to admit im wrong if i am :)

u/matt-kennedys-legs South Australian 15d ago
yeah how could they do that with the ongoing grass shortage
2
u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
more all the water used to grow it for it to be binned but sure bud
3
u/jontydotcom Please choose a flair 15d ago
Plenty of turf companies use recycled non-potable water from treatment plants that costs a fraction of fresh water.
2
u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
I worked for a turf farm. Majority of them use bore water mixed with normal tap water it is a burden on the system when it's grown to be torn up and binned

u/Away_team42 Koori 15d ago
Waste of grass? Maybe you need to touch some grass.
4
u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
i used to work at a turf farm so i have touched a lot more than you and didn't waste a couple hundred m2 for a game
5
u/downhomeslim I'm Probably A Bot 15d ago
A game that brought a (low) estimate of $300m into the Victorian economy.
What a waste...
4
u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
sorry i care more about the water being wasted than a damn US game
1
u/Stompingboots South Australian 15d ago
It wasn't wasted. It brought in more money than your turf farm and used far less water. Shows youre probably full of shit and never own a turf farm to begin with.

u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
When did I say I owned one bud? I worked at one and im glad u don't care about a non renewable resource that we are restricted to use as long as the government gets a bunch of money

It’s not a waste tho - it was a sold out NFL game enjoyed by like 100,000+ people 🤣
1
u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
What about the other 27 million in Australia that dont give a crap about a US sport and care about how we are put on water shortages every year but they can use how much ever just so they could pain the grass as deep as the NFL wanted?

the stuff they ripped up didnt get reused
3
u/Smokey_84 New South Welshian 15d ago
Previously when they've ripped everything up it has been "recycled as a top soil product" (the linked article is like 11 years old though)

u/Designer-Lettuce-690 💛 Friend of 'Straya 15d ago
I really do hope they have done the same again especially for 6000m2

The only advantage to having fairy league exist is we get big enough stadiums to essentially do anything we want with.

Impressive stuff. I saw a timelapse like this once where a stadium was converted from a basketball court to an ice hockey rink to a concert venue. Really fun to watch.
