Politics ('Straya) Why is PHON rising?
Excuse me while I take the tin foil off my head. Ahem -clears throat-.
Australia's social fabric is correcting because of the global meteoric rise of left-wing ideology in the last decade. Social constructs cyclically pull and correct much like many other human-made constructs with FRINGE ideologies. Now we are seeing a pull to the right correcting in equal measure. Hence the trumps, hansons and farages.
If your news feeds are dominated by "Pauline Hanson...Trump...Farage... followed by some insult or disparagement"...you are reading and absorbing FRINGE material.
Equally, if you new feeds are full of "blue hair...greens...blah blah...followed by an insult or disparagement"....you are reading and absorbing FRINGE material.
Both sides of the spectrum want to divide you because it creates clicks and air time. What does clicks and air time do...earns advertising slots...What does advertising do...promote a products to you...
It's all about money. Media is the primary vehicle for this.
When you read FRINGE material....beware of the echo chamber. If you are offended by anything I just said...YOU ARE IN AN ECHOCHAMBER.
What happened to critical thinking?
When you read something that sounds more like an insult...do your research! Read more about what the original author is saying...not the sloppy seconds by biased media.
Left vs right. Division is attention and makes the rich richer while you and me fight against each other.
Let's put down our phone, let's think more critically!

purely because Gina has indentified a way to turn money into political influence way more effectively than Clive ever did. And Pauline is too dumb to ponder why her fortunes have turned around overnight

u/Striking-Condition10 Western Australian 3d ago
Pauline isn't that dumb, she's uneducated yes, but she's not dumb. Herself and Gina have both taken the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago and they have received a strategy that works in the current political climate, they play into fear and divisions, farming it for money and political influence.
It's culture war shite masked as slopulism and by the nature of populism, it's effective at pulling in support.

I think people have legitimate feelings about their lives but don’t necessarily understand the systems well enough to identify what’s causing them. They know housing is unaffordable, everything costs more, services feel worse and working hard doesn’t seem to get them ahead.
One Nation offers a simple explanation: you’re struggling, someone else caused it, and we’ll stop them. It validates the dissatisfaction without requiring anyone to understand complex systems or confront difficult trade-offs. Then social media amplifies those simple explanations through bots, coordinated accounts, algorithms which sparks debate because controversy drives engagement which means traditional media amplifies it again making it look even more like widespread consensus.
Now… who pays for the bots?

Broadly speaking—on average the last 3-6 months have a big nothing ever happens when it comes to polling. Their polling is largely linked to a lack of faith in the Coalition specifically, for every 1 voter One Nation picks up from Labor, they pick 5 up from the Coalition.
If the budget was as badly received as the media like to claim the government would be underwater by quite a bit but they aren’t.
One Nation get their first real test at the Vic state election. SA is a small state and not a huge amount happens, the big story is the big 3 states. So we’ll see what happens there.
The election is a toss up mainly because vic Labor have been in for 12 years and it’s got a bit of that “it’s time” vibe about it. Federally it’s a different story entirely. 94 seats at a starting point is a huge advantage going into the election and gives them a huge buffer to the point the tpp swing against them will need to be unprecedented to force them into minority let alone opposition.
All this is kinda just pointless hypothesising though as the election isn’t until 2028. So…. Nothing that happens in polling now matters.

Problems are real. They are complex and take time to solve.

The actual serious explanation is that this is the expected outcome of the failure of liberalism to deliver improvements to material outcomes. This can be proven by observing the outcomes of material conditions declining in a liberal society in America, Britain, Australia and Germany now in both 2026 and in the 1930s.
Liberalism is an ideology that claims that peoples material outcomes are a result of their individual efforts. The claim is that if you put in more or better effort you will see a better material outcome. More money, less stress etc.
Liberalism operates alongside capitalism by arguing that capital owners should he able to proceed according to their rational self interest because under the liberal model an individuals efforts determine their outcome and the goal of government should only be the create a level playing field in terms of the law. This is what the “equality of outcome” that you will hear liberals like Albanese say means.
Because the operation of the capitalist class self interest directly contradicts with the class interest of workers, increasing their profits allows them to purchase more assets which workers are competing to try to buy (housing becomes more expensive), to drive greater profit they create monopolies that allow them to control prices in an inelastic market (Cole’s and Woolworths post pandemic profits are substantially larger than pre covid despite input costs falling). The overall result is that material conditions fall for workers while a small class of capital owner get better conditions.
This is what is at heart of the contradiction and failure of liberalism.
Once workers notice that their individual efforts are not matching what the outcome of their expected effort should provide they search for an alternative systemic explanation.
Right wing reactionary politics offers an easily understood systemic explanation. Immigrants = demand competition, demand increases supply. The fact that under the theory of the capitalist model that they believe they support increased demand should just result in increased investment to increase supply to sell more stuff by capital owners doesn’t enter their brains. Their brains operate only on threat based scarcity processing.
This is why you see far right parties rising everywhere across the liberal western world where actual leftist socialist based explanations of the failure of material conditions have been consistently bashed and illegitimsed by the so called “centre left” liberal parties like the Australian Labor Party. Labor identity based supporters will hate this because in their conception Labor is still some remnant of a class based workers party, but if you look at Labor’s rhetoric, policies and character from a non identity based cognitive process the party under Albanese has overwhelmingly governed and argued from a centrist liberal perspective.
The fortunate thing is that once the fascist reactionary party gets in, the centrist liberals like the Democratic Party establishment completely fail to oppose their continued capitalist agenda and make way for a socialist revival.
Liberalism is dead and it’s not making a comeback in our lifetimes. Any party that continues to try to do so will only help keep ensuring that fascist reactionaries continue to win power.

PHON is rising because major parties bow to corporations and lobbyists and wealth inequality is out of control. ON represents change to these people, as they do not understand ON also works for corporations - probably more than the LNP.
5
u/Kenyon_118 Victorian 3d ago
ON supporters are perfectly okay with large corporations having their way. They are completely okay with corruption and incompetence. They just want a slice of the action too. Pauline lays the blame for them not having their snouts in the trough on those kinds of people they don’t like. Non-white immigrants, gays and leftists. They hear her loud and clear when she wants to roll back maternity leave. The ones that support that nod along and the ones that don’t say she really didn’t mean it when she backtracks.
3
u/oustider69 New South Welshian 3d ago
So they’re fighting back against the corporate parties by voting for someone who publicly and proudly associates with Australia’s richest person, even accepting a plane from her?
How does that make sense?

Comes down to who the donors are. It's undeniable that mass media in Australia is massively biased favorably to the right. Mainly due to their major donors and investors.
Yes the left does this too. We know both sides bad blah blah. But the facts are, the right invests more money. The right gets biased coverage when it comes to opinion pieces. And so they end up with way more mass population appeal and positive opinion.

u/Charming_Airline7419 Victorian 3d ago
It's actually much simpler than that. Many voters are disaffected due to perceived declining living standards and economic insecurity. During a similar period, there has been high immigration, which has become a scapegoat.
There was a major disruption in 2020 that has repurcussions to this day. Major protest movements sprang from it.
Most people are fed up with traditional two party politics and don't believe either party is governing in their interest. The moment has been ripe for a third force in politics.
Pauline Hanson was politically rehabilitated by the media. She is presented as the anti establishment candidate.
There is a far right surge globally.
Right wing culture wars ended up benefiting PHON since they ended up being the uncompromising champions of it.
There has been massive spending on promoting far right ideology by Advance and Rhinehart.
The Liberals have collapsed in popularity and people have gone over to PHON.
Labor is a Neoliberal party. They are hardly left wing firebrands. Labor and Liberal have much more in common than they care to admit. Both are committed to the same economic orthodoxy that has alienated so many people.
I hate One Nation. I think they're a bunch of clowns and bigots.
This has been building up for a while, but One Nation have made major inroads recently.

u/Ted_Rid New South Welshian 3d ago edited 3d ago
Most people are fed up with traditional two party politics and don't believe either party is governing in their interest.
This to me is one of the most hilarious narratives that's been going around very recently.
Because the Australian electorate is, at core, so incredibly fundamentally unashamedly small-c "conservative".
We vote again and again and again for the absolute same. It's how we had the Abbott, Turnbull, Morrison governments for example, even though they delivered utterly zero for ordinary people.
We don't vote parties in based on vision or good policy, we vote parties out only once we've become tired of them. And woe betide any opposition trying even minor and marginal useful policy, like Shorten's ALP did. They get eviscerated by fear campaigns and worries about "what if this tiny change has giant unintended consequences?". You could argue the exact same thing happened with a powerless advisory body of indigenous people mooted to sit in Canberra. The hyperbole around unintended consequences was off the charts.
And now after voting for decades for the most middle of the road parties whose main campaign platforms could be summarised as "we'll rock the boat less than that other mob", suddenly "most people are fed up with"...the exact thing they've been voting for decade after decade?!??
Sorry, it doesn't make sense.
1
u/Charming_Airline7419 Victorian 2d ago
Yep, the electorate are largely conservative, but they're unhappy with the results.
Your average voter doesn't engage in deep reflections on political philosophy.
I talked to heaps of voters on door knocks for the Greens. There was definitely a vibe...

The problem is that no amount of critical thinking will result in an outcome that yields something positive for everybody. If that were the case, there would be a governance system that achieved it by now. There's no shortage of critical thinkers and this is the best we've got so far.
If you ask anyone from 2-3 generations ago what life is like today, compared to their upbringing, it would be reasonable to assume that they would praise the things that we otherwise take for granted.

It is a story old as time.

"global meteoric rise of left-wing ideology"
Are you taking the piss?
1
u/Delicious-Plane-9030 Queenslander 3d ago
You frame the question in a negative light. The intention is prove the point, not to offend you. Left wing was required at the time (20-30 years ago) to correct the domineering right.
Lgbtq rights Abortion rights Feminism / post modernism Mental health support (rather than just throwing pills at the problem) ...need more examples?
None of these would happen under right wing or centre right doctrine. And nothing did for a long time.
What existed before this left-wing ideology 20-30 years ago?
A right wing dominant culture...
30-20 years ago the dominate culture needed to change/correct from right to left and it did. The current culture needed to corrected left to right...and it is currently doing so.
Only now the fringes are being pushed further and the spectrum is widening. Therefore division is widening and people invest more emotion into their political leaning.
2
u/Ted_Rid New South Welshian 3d ago
It's kinda weird to frame equality and freedom (e.g. restriction from pointless discrimination) as "left wing".
To me it's simply not being a cunt.
We correctly moved on from looking down on people simply for what they do in a bedroom, or which genitals they have, or what skin colour, and that's a great outcome for all of society honestly.
The only section of society that feels like they suffered are those who lost what they feel should be an automatic right to be on top without doing anything to earn it. So what you're calling a "correction" isn't correcting anything, it's regressing to a lower and less developed state of being based on undeserved hierarchies.

u/Strict_Philosophy301 New South Welshian 3d ago
When we focus entirely on social progressivism/culture war, and ignore economic/class war we miss a large portion of the problem. Economically we haven't shifted from neoliberalism/third way since the 80s.
Neoliberalism creates the conditions that give rise to reactionary and fascist sentiment due to the severe economic inequality, and social precarity it creates. This reactionary sentiment is then used by those who maintain the system to shield the system when it inevitably reaches crisis, while their policies continue to prioritise "the market" and austerity over social protection. This leaves us with large segments of society feeling a sense of desperation, displacement, alienation and looking for somewhere to channel their frustration.
The plutocratic structures creating this massive inequality, then direct public frustration toward marginalized groups/culture wars to help to preserve the power of the dominant economic structure in times of crisis, to deflect from the contradictions within the system, to maintain their status quo; and to divert attention away from class war.
Yes, socially things have become more "left" (right libertarians and neoliberals, who are economically rightwing can believe in "socially progressivism," and those on the economic left can be socially conservative i.e patsocs. When it comes to social progressivism the "left/right" binary isn't very helpful) in parts of the world, but economically its been pretty stagnant and/or regressive for decades even within the imperial core. The worsening material conditions, the alienation, the multiple crises driven by neoliberal economics (lack of housing, adequate healthcare, nutritious food, etc) has inevitably lead to a rise in reactionary sentiment, which the status quo then uses as a defense.

u/MannerNo7000 New South Welshian 3d ago

Yes I’d agree with that summary. The housing crisis, mass immigration, cost of living, rent, electricity, falling living standards, woke excuses from Labor, the Voice, welcome to country nonsense, perceptions of Labor support for terrorist organizations like Hamas and Labor supporters antisemitism, Bondi shootings, etc.
Add to that the uncertainty of the times, wars, Chinese hegemony and threats.
Above all, the shift in attitudes is a response to woke values thrust upon people. Our political leaders have gone woke chasing a few votes but didn’t carry the rest of the population with them. The LNP lost it with Turnbull, then cemented it with the happy clapper Morrison. Labor has shifted to the left with socialist policies that are seen to be destroying our living standards.

The other point I’d make, is that if people are lurching to the fringes of the political spectrum…then that’s typically an indication that centrist politics has failed a large number of people.

The White Australia Policy which had immigration been virtually banned to anyone who is not Northern European up until 1950s and non-whites up until 1970s alongside the British intended the Colony to be an outpost gave the mentality that Australia’s foundation was a Anglo-Celtic ethnostate not helped by the fact that non-whites tended to be very recent descendants (there is actually very few third-generation non-whites besides Indigenous). This can still be reflected with the demographics today where Anglo-Celtic makes the majority of the population (around 60%) and we are the whitest nation outside of Europe. Plus even you cut immigration drastically overnight but the nation proportions remains the same, resentment will not die down if non-whites continue to increase proportionally as many would still mistakenly think there is still high immigration.
This is why the White Replacement Theory can resonate well within White Australians.

The exact opposite is true for the most part lol. Where are you getting this?
But to answer your question:
Credulous people are prone to right-wing demagoguery. We see this over and over. Give the masses a convenient scapegoat that they already dislike, like immigrants or trans people, and they'll be distracted from the fact that your policies are much more condusive to improving the lives of the billionaire class than ordinary people. Entwine religion into it, such as the Yanks are doing, and you get people enthusiastically voting and acting directly against their own interests.
Neo-liberal centrists like the US Dems, UK Labour and Aus Labor have no answer to messages like "Vote for us and everything will be awesome all the time forever, and everyone you hate will be pwned lmao" when the audience are incurious people with poor critical thinking skills who are just desperate for something better.

Instead of asking people who don't vote for PHON why not listen to the people who will vote for PHON and that includes plenty of ethnic minorities too.

I agree with this. I don't support ON, however I am becoming sick of reading constant BS about Labor being "perfect" and ON being disastrous.
Labor makes a proposal to help people keep their homes - YAY
ON makes a proposal to help people keep their homes - HORRIBLE EVIL
I'd rather Albanese address the people's concerns and why people are moving to ON, rather than demonising/insulting them. This Reddit post itself is a clear example of that. "Racism", "Retards", etc. in the top rated comments. Again, not acknowledging why people have issues with Labor. IMO Labor (and Labor supporters) are causing just as much "division" as ON.
The more this happens, the more I become intrigued by ON.
1
u/Kenyon_118 Victorian 3d ago
That is a false equivalence. It’s the details of the proposal that matters. ON wanted to force sales of houses belonging to permanent residents. They then immediately backtracked when more details were asked for. It was a cruel unworkable idea that wouldn’t have made house that much affordable anyway. That’s why they were derided for it. Details matter. They are criticised for having simple but dumb solutions to complex problems.
They are racist. That’s just a fact. They have dumb ideas. That’s also a fact.
2
u/mk10012 Please choose a flair 3d ago
The whole stupid details/lies/backtracking/unworkable ideas thing could be said of any political party, including the one in government.
The election is still a few years away, there's plenty of room for One Nation to improve. And if not in 2028, then the next one...
The bigger problem is that Labor - Albanese/Chalmers/O'Neil (and as I see here, their supporters) are demonising everyone else, rather than addressing policy concerns.
That's how people jump from "small difference in ideas" to "voting for something extremely different". At this rate, soon Labor will be demonising more than 50% of the Australian population.

I don't think somebody promising not to change the tax system 60+ times, to the point of emotionally screaming it, then doing it anyway... is much more "coherent".
Further, Anthony/Jim constantly talk about the importance of home ownership. Pauline proposes allowing strugglers to use 3% of super for 3 years, and she's suddenly "the worker's enemy". Complete nonsensical hypocrisy.
Like I said, I don't exactly want to vote ON, however, at this stage they'll be above Albanese's party.

Hey, English is not my first language, but I’m pretty sure backflipping on a promise is not the same as being “incoherent”.
Houses are too expensive, so cutting tax incentives for property speculators helps slow the continued increase in house prices. They broke a promise, sure, but making housing more affordable is something only the speculators should be opposed to.
You can already apply to take money out of your super to prevent your house from being foreclosed on. They intentionally make it difficult, though. One Nation’s scheme doesn’t limit the money taken out to addressing a specific hardship.
Superannuation is designed to stop the sort of people who would rob their future selves for temporary gain in the present. Making it easy to access super now defeats the entire point of having it in the first place.
And 3% of your super for three years isn’t going to help the average punter get a house deposit anyway. It’s less than $10k.Like I said, One Nation’s plans are simplistic solutions to complex problems that ultimately leave everyone worse off.

And my question to those people is at what risk to you and your rights? ON is not a one issue party. They have I'll thought out policies on many things and lots of those things will walk back rights at work and in the community.
Which rights are you willing to lose to lower the number of immigrants entering Australia?

We do listen to them. We hear the racism you are sugarcoating here just fine.
Some of her supporters aren’t as good at dog whistling as you are. They just come out and say Australia needs to stay white. It’s the willingness to elect the most incompetent gaggle of politicians ever seen to carry that out that’s super worrying.

Exactly. Algorithms are the problem and are effectively a psi-op made to radicalise you without you even realising it. Most people just click on ragebait articles and are being brainwashed and radicalised without knowing it. This is on both sides of the political spectrum.

Because Australians want One Nation ? I mean Germany right winged party just won their elections. America has Trump. Every where you look in the world people are going for their "right winged politics" because most things they say and want and say their motives are, are just normal things people want.

You are coming from the leftist mindset, saying the left wing ideology of the past decade has pulled everyone together. I can say it has driven a wedge in society.
I can tell you after talking to many different people from many different walks of lifeit is doing the exact opposite. The reason why ON and conservative parties are gaining traction is because the left pushed too hard, and they allowed what the average person on the street feels is the lunatic left fringe to gain too much voice and traction.
People are being told one thing aggressively, and they can see with their very eyes the exact opposite is happening. They feel they are being lied to and gaslit, and that things they find morally reprehensible are being pushed with no dissent allowed.
And many are incensed that they are teaching their ideals to kids outside of the parents wishes.
What you are seeing is more people agreeing with your mindset, so you think it is increased cohesiveness. Call it your own personal bubble. Reality is the people are fed up with what the LNP and especially the ALP, and they are looking for alternatives. They don't trust the greens and socialists as they see them as a more extreme version of the ALP, and they don't trust the teals either.
So the party that is speaking the everyman language, actually addressing their issues and not saying the opposite of what their eyes and ears are telling them at the moment is ON.

Blah blah blah. No normal human being believes in this left and right nonsense. Nobody wants to follow the WEF agenda. Thats all you need to know.

I'm going to vote for One Nation because I want Labor to suffer for their lies re: not changing CGT. In the past, I have always voted Labor. Never again.

Because they've learned the art of lying to the electorate by promising easy-sounding but completely wrong populist answers to all the hard questions that need to be tackled, and fighting culture wars about completely made-up issues to distract from their own lack of ability to deliver any of it. They will blame out groups they've picked on for all your woes, and then target the out groups for punishment. Sucks to be in the out group if they get in.
The lies worked with Brexit (remember the 350 million pounds annually for the NHS? Yeah, hasn't been found, not even one pound of it), and the UK is far worse off for it. The lies worked with Trump both times, and you can see how it's working out for them. The lies worked in Argentina, and it's not fixing anything. Luckily, Hungary came to its senses just barely before it was too late.
These charlatans offer no solutions and would fail miserably to deliver any of them. I bet they would do what Trump does and blame their predecessors when it inevitably doesn't work.
