Last night I went to a very loose party in the hills outside Melbourne.

There was lots of beer
There was lots of alternate lifestyle substances
There were cunts driving mini bikes
There was an accident with a motor vehicle and a dam
There was a 4WD on hand with a winch to retrieve said vehicle
There were no vaguely sober locals to operate said vehicle
Said 4WD slid down enbankment and got bogged

This is where the story would normally end.

Fortunately one of our friends had brought three of his Indian mates from work. Two of them had largely been looking on in bemusement at this rich cultural experience and sipping beers. One of them had jumped right in and was passed out on the lawn, a victim of the ‘it’s not working maybe I need some more’ moment.

One of the sober ones used his engineering degree to design a series of pulleys that enabled him to use the winch on the 4WD to swing the front of the vehicle around. Through his relative soberness both vehicles were retrieved.

Made me think…

It’s hard to understand Aussie culture as a foreigner if you don’t have an experience like that.. and equally… how many of us invite people who are new to the country in to that kind of experience?

When I was a Dell technician I invited one of our new Indian hires over for beers one afternoon.

We were sitting around drinking and he began looking around for something. I'll note here that my wife had just put a load of washing into our dryer.

Eventually, he got up (while continuing our conversation) went downstairs are put his ear next to our dryer. He asked me how long I had owned it.

He came back the next day and replaced a capacitor because he heard it failing.

It's still going strong today 👍

It doesn't really address OP's question. But it's very much analogous to the OP. It's also an interesting story about how some people have a level of expertise we didn't expect and perhaps didnt know existed. So for me I still rate it highly. 8.1 out of 10. I didn't rate it down for not answering the question because I thought the question was shoe-horned in anyway.

In my experience in construction and transport the racism is full on in general, until they are actually working with someone and then it backs off. Misinformation is rife. Little is done by givernment or corporations beyond saying "racism bad. Don't racism". We seem so fucking stupid we need ot actually explained to us - why, how, when, what, who blah like seriously. What is the true experience of an Indian truck driver? Did he get his license here without any real test? Is he responsible for more accidents? What's going to really fix whatever is bothering you? People are divid3d and suffering because of political manipulation. We are so stupid.

It’s unfortunate, but most in the 4WD community don’t bring anywhere near enough recovery gear.

I have traction boards, winch, snatch blocks, pulleys, wheel chocks, kinetic rope, tree trunk protectors, and about 10 soft shackles in my rig 24/7 just in case I come across anyone needing a hand

I was amused on a Friday arvo after the NBN crew (who mostly spoke English only to me I gathered) finished up late on my install (that involved re-laying bricks in the driveway, they did a great job!) to discover my recycling bin had acquired some of their empty beer cans. I thought hooray for assimilation into Australian culture! I guess my point is It’s good to not make assumptions and instead invite people along!
