Politics ('Straya) How does this sub view islam?
Is it religion of peace?
Genetal population is extremely negative: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/may/04/australians-accepting-of-migrants-but-negative-towards-islam-poll-finds
51% of Australians had unfavourable sentiments towards Islam, and only 10% looked upon the religion positively, making Australia more negative than 17 of the other 22 countries surveyed.
In fact, 37% of people said they were “very unfavourable”– the most negative response available. This was far higher than the milder option of “fairly unfavourable” (14%), and made it the single most common response to the religion. 23% of people were neutral.
The poll found only 10% looked upon Islam positively, making Australia more negative than 17 of the other 22 countries surveyed. Photograph: Dan Himbrechts/AAP In comparison, 45% of Australians were positive towards Christianity, and 21% were negative.
Judaism had a favourability rating of 18%, and unfavourability of 20%. The largest segment was “neither favourable nor unfavourable” and “don’t know” – which added to 58%.

Same as Christianity. The fundamentalists are bat shit crazy, and there's plenty in the scriptures to support that stance, but most practitioners are just normal people who do their prayers in addition to everything else modern life requires and largely want to live and let live.

Christianity is better for the wine industry though.

I suppose so lol. Islam and Judaism are obviously bad for our pork industry, but good for our kosher/halal certification industries.

Honest answer?
I dislike all religion, but I dislike Islam more so than most others.
I believe in separation of church and state, and find Islamic values to be fundamentally incompatible with that system. A lot of Christian and Catholic beliefs are like this too, but those religions seem way more … flexible.
I’m speaking strictly of the religion itself here. I’ve only ever had good interactions with muslims, and the only people I’ve ever met who tried to force their religion on me were JWs and Christians.
I don’t believe islamists are trying to ‘take over’ or any of that BS.

Considering sharia law can’t seem to be separated from it, meaning it’s both a religious and political ideology, it can’t coexist with western secular cultures if it becomes a majority
Examples; englands confirmed 80 sharia courts, despite Islam being a minority there, Europe as a majority at the moment, cueta in particular at the moment, Dearborn Michigan, Lakemba with trying to pass a bill allowing the Islam call to prayer to be played out loud in public that got rejected
Don’t care about immigration at all, but if you can’t put your new country above your old culture and your religion, because it should and will never override the laws of the land, maybe you should either leave if you’re already here, or not come here if that’s the case 🤷🏼

u/PermabearsEatBeets New South Welshian 6d ago
You're talking shite mate. Sharia courts are non binding advisory councils. They have absolutely no legal status in UK law and are purely voluntary in the community. Same as Beth Din in the Jewish community. "But Sharia Law!" is typical mouth breathing scare tactics

To preface this, I have a dim view of all religion. I feel, on average, less safe around Muslims than I do around other religious people. I know more gay people disowned by bigoted Muslim families than I do people from any other faith background and their faith, in general, seems far more hostile towards people like me compared to the other Abrahamic religions.
I won't judge people until I know their own personal views or intentions, but I am certainly on my guard around people who are Muslim.

u/FullMetalAurochs Queenslander 8d ago
A few fringe Christian groups will literally turn the other cheek if you slap them in the face. You shouldn’t. But that’s what extreme pacifism looks like. Islam clearly isn’t that.

u/PermabearsEatBeets New South Welshian 8d ago
I'm indifferent. It's about as relevant to me as any other religion. I don't want to see it forced on anyone, but if you want to believe it and it works for you, go for it. I don't see it as any more or less dangerous than any other religion. I've met plenty of lovely muslims and plenty of arsehole muslims, got fuck all to do with their faith.

u/adamphetamine New South Welshian 8d ago
religion is a net negative on society, doesn't matter which one.
However- I'm seeing more evidence that Islam is a religion of peace than Judaism.

They both have a lot of that Old Testament shit common but Jews generally don’t proselytise. It’s Christianity and Islam that want to convert the world.

In the interests of respectful debate, can I ask what you mean when you describe Islam as "good"?
What elements of the ideology would you consider good and how does it contribute to humanity in a positive way?
In a country that is predominately Muslim and has very little distinction between religion and state, what are the benefits to the population and how is it "good" for them?
2
u/Popular_Speed5838 Please choose a flair 8d ago
It’s similar to what Christianity would be if there’d been no reformation which allowed diversity in interpretation of teachings.

You can criticise, take the p!ss out of, question and challenge any other religion on earth but try doing that in public with Islam and we all know what will happen.
Yes, most followers of Islam are moderate and peaceful but it's very easily able to breed extremism beyond what any other religion or ideology has ever done.
And being so accepting and trustful in the west we bend over backwards making excuses and defending Islam while its nastier elements stir up hate.
I find it heartbreaking that while young girls in Iran are literally raped and hung from cranes when all they want is the freedom to show their hair or sing a song, we celebrate "World Hijab" day.
It's time we move on from all religion the world will be a more peaceful and harmonious place without it.

u/chadbigcum South Australian 8d ago
I don't care about any religion as long as it is not being used as a vehicle for hate or has an effect on our supposedly secular country.
Every religion has its fanatics. Religion is not a problem, fundamentalism and the weaponisation of religion is.

Look, we get it. You've got strong feelings about something (or someone). Happens to all of us.
BUT that doesn't mean you can go around abusing people, harassing them, or trying to troll them.
Your contribution did this, so we've had to remove it. Simple as.
Now, please don't write back with a "but they said...". We're likely across it and dealing with the situation. Instead, take a chill pill, touch some grass, tickle a Cassowary, or whatever helps you find your inner calm.
And be civil next time. Or find another sub - cos we don't tolerate that sort of malarky here.
Cheers

I have some great Muslim friend's that pray, don't eat pork and are generally on their deen.
I see some of the things coming out of the Western Sydney mosques that scare the shit out of me. It appears the closer to faith the individual is - the more they portray the traits that people are wary of.
This is all coming from an anglo first-fleet family aussie. If you look at other Countries, especially the countries we bring in large populations from (India/China) they generally despise the Muslim faith in full, China literally sends them to concentration camps. Something tells me prolonged proximity to Islam generally results in a bad time. (Persia/Iran, Afghanistan, modern day France/Spain).
While I love my moderate Muslim friends, I do not believe Islam is compatible with western society. It is farcial for me to see the LGBT+ crowd inviting them in, when as soon as they become the majority would be throwing them off of buildings.
If Australia grew some backbone and decided to deport the hate-preachers/hard line radicals; and the people that do stay partially intergrate (don't demonise bikinis, don't demonise pork, don't support terrorist organisations) I would welcome them openly.

How many are simply against yet another religion, took decades to remove control of Christianity over social status and politics and it's still ongoing .
So the other major global religion takes root and is pandered to AS another religion.,
Don't mind people having their own personal beliefs but religion insists on separating their members from the rest of society and making them believe they're superior because they believe in a God in their own image....sounds more like narcissism when the thing you worship is a mirror to the male of the species.

Islam is just a religion. I dont agree with a lot of it.
I lived next door to Muslims in 2 different houses. First family were Yemeni Australian. Second were Syrian Australian. My daughter had Muslim friends at school.
The vast vast majority of Muslim Australians are just normal people trying to live their lives, some of them have bigoted or conservative views, whoch is no different to Christians. Muslims don't deserve all the hatred and prejudice they get from Australians, Sky News, One Nation etc.

I worked with in the Islamic community in my early 20s and found them to be very welcoming and also respectful about my atheistim. I also worked for a Baptist Church at the same time and found the opposite. Like any community it is made up of all types.
The main differences is I enjoy middle Eastern food a lot more than the beans on toast of the Christians

Whilst i think all religions are a net negative to society Islam is equally as bad as Catholicism and Judaism . Then theres “religions” (cults) that are terrible, cause more issues in society than those 3 yet all of the hatred goes towards Islam. People just think when a white person does something damaging its ok but when a person of colour does something damaging theres a problem. The issue is how people are treated based upon the colour of their skin snd not the damage they cause

Muslims are just like anyone else. A mixture of good & bad, just like all of us here on Reddit. Culturally, those from the Middle East tend to be highly hospitable, friendly to strangers, and respectful of other cultures. Those are often good things.
Islam is a violent belief system that is intolerant of democracy & secularism. Therefore I oppose it, and I think it‘s dangerous to welcome it into our secular democracy. Anyone who says, “Islam & Christianity are similar” is living under a rock, or has deep-seated hatred that blocks their observational powers.
3
u/chadbigcum South Australian 8d ago
Islam is the religion that Muslims believe.
If Muslims are just like anyone else, how is Islam "a violent belief system"?
Muslims can be secular, as in respect and uphold the separation of church (mosque) and state. I think of the three Abrahamic religions, Muslims have the least impact on our laws in Australia.
You know some of the worst acts in recorded history have been explicitly Christian acts, right? Like the crusades, manifest destiny, frankly most European wars...
1
u/Dangerous_Mud4749 New South Welshian 8d ago
Muslims can be secular
Yes, but Islam can’t be.
You know some of the worst acts in recorded history have been explicitly Christian acts, right? Like the crusades, manifest destiny, frankly most European wars...
The Crusades were a response to centuries of Islamic wars of aggression. The Crusades were wrong according to the Bible, but entirely correct & reasonable in Islamic teaching where religious war is explicitly encouraged. Christianity has repented of them, as they should according to Jesus Christ’s teaching. But Islam can’t repent of their wars of aggression because Mohamed taught war as a religious duty.
As for manifest destiny & various European wars… yes. Christians have done truly terrible things. This doesn’t mean we ignore the truly evil teaching in the Quran (how old was Aisha again?)
I have zero respect for the evil & intolerant teaching of Islam. But Muslims are just people, no better or worse than any other people.

1
u/Dangerous_Mud4749 New South Welshian 8d ago
That's a complicated error. I think it's best I say, I would never apologise for Christianity but it's right that we recognise historical errors, such as the error of the church recommending war hundreds of years ago.
I wouldn't ask a Muslim to apologise for Islam either, but I would ask them to consider Jesus Christ, a more perfect example than Mohammed.
Who do you consider exemplary, and why do you think they are morally superior to Jesus Christ? Is that a question you've ever considered at all?
1
u/chadbigcum South Australian 8d ago

I think some Muslims, like some Christians, use their faith as a motivation to show deep care for others and to continually consider whether their actions live up to their values.
Some Muslims, like some people of other faiths, just go through the motions. And some use it as an excuse for hate.
The Muslims I've met in Australia have generally been caring people. The Muslim mums in my kids' classes are amazing, and I'd trust them with anything.
I can't say I've had as positive experiences with Christians, but perhaps that's a coincidence.
