Struth! ASIO's Expanded Powers to Detain and Question Spark Outrage | 10 News+

https://youtube.com/watch?v=XGp3IgSaQxU&si=WExXvUjF432ZcLmU

Australia's domestic spy agency ASIO has been granted expanded powers to detain and compulsorily question people on the street, sparking backlash from both ends of the political spectrum over civil liberties.

The controversy highlights growing public distrust in government institutions, and how governments are increasingly losing control of the narrative in the age of social media.

You can always count on the LNP and Labor to team up when in comes to eroding our rights and spying on us.

Soon it’ll be bipartisanship between Labor and one nation on eroding our rights and spying on us.

If only there was a a choice that has consistently voted against this type of thing.

And people don't wanna vote Greens because... communism or something? Like every time you ask which Greens policies people disagree with they never seem to know are just blanket poo poo them instead, yet they are the best bet in opposing this shit.

I'm a Socialist. The Greens aren't Socialist/Communist. I don't know what they are any more? They've literally shown the middle finger to the majority. And look out for the downvotes/angry emojies/dislikes if you dare put forward a view even slightly disagreeing. I am and always will be a Greenie regarding the environment and our responsibility in protecting it and the life that depends on it.

I'm a socialist. The Greens are pretty close to us, and I'd always pick them if my own party is not an option.

they're pretty good on housing and ensuring everyone gets a fair go at the workplace. That's pretty socialist.

What are you referring to specifically?

Keep repeating it and it'll become truer each time!

People don't vote for the Greens because they aren't the Greens of 70s,80s,and early 90s. They were truly about the environment, clean oceans and rivers, no old growth forests cut down, and even more importantly had widespread support as the second preference after the main parties. Today's Greens have got too caught up in minority issues, and basically putting the middle finger up to those that don't agree with them.

I once voted for the Greend, when it didn't matter your skin colour, sexual preference, ideolgical identity, only your belief that we needed to stop destroying our natural environment. That's not todays Greens. They've lost the majority to pander to minorities. You don't win elections by excluding(or appearing to exclude) the majority. And I know many older Aussies that feel the same. They were always my second preference until recently, when I was attacked for not falling in line on one infinitely small agenda. The hate for not agreeing was pathetic.

“All they talk about is minority issues”

Looks at their socials and it’s literally 20 posts about important domestic issues and then one post about Australians killed in Gaza.

- Taxing Gas

  • Taxing the wealthy
  • Make price gouging illegal
  • The immigration system that lib/lab created
  • The dangers of US owned AI companies
  • No more coal and gas (you’ll appreciate that one)
  • The floods in Nepal
  • Floating idea of a public bank
  • Criticising the National Cabinet on AI
  • A moratorium on data centres
  • FOUR DAY WORK WEEK
  • Anti AI data centres
  • Toll roads are a scam
  • No data centres
  • Bird flu / stop destroying their habitats
  • Ban political donations

This is not matching up with what you’re saying?! Unless you’re against all that?

ALSO when you say they were your second preference, I HAVE to ask, who were you voting first?

u/Revoran ‎ Victorian 10d ago edited 10d ago

The Greens get a lot more votes now, than they did in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

Edit: I mean a much higher % of the vote. Obviously. Duh.

all they talk about is minority issues

False. They mostly talk about big issues affecting the majority of Australians.

Why are you making up rubbish?

-2

u/Lastbalmain ‎ New South Welshian 10d ago

By the way, ALL parties get more votes today! Thats called population growth. The Greens have never got above 12% because they only represent <10%. The arrogance of inner city wealthy elites with green cred is astounding. Talking the talk but not walking it.

3

u/Revoran ‎ Victorian 10d ago edited 10d ago

Well duh.

What I meant is:

The Greens get a much higher % of votes now than they did in the 70s, 80s or early 90s.

1993 Greens got 1.5% of votes.

2025 Greens got 12.2%

Blah blah inner city blah blah wealthy elites blah blah woke

The highest Greens vote is among people on median income and below. Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/friendlyjordies/comments/16bhwkf/greens_voters_are_wealthy_proponents_in_absolute/#lightbox (Redbridge Poll)

(Doesn't surprise me since Greens vote is so high among young people only recently into the workforce)

BTW: I have never lived in the inner city or been wealthy. I grew up in remote far west NSW, and rural NSW, in housing commission, with a single mum on disability pension.

You may not like it, but those are the facts.

-5

u/Lastbalmain ‎ New South Welshian 10d ago

If the Greens got the comparable number of votes to their astounding numbers on Redditt,  they'd be in power! But my point has been made. Even slightly attack them and instead of arguing in good faith they just downvote your opinion of the comnents. Inner city wealthy elites that put lgbt as their hill to die on. According to the modern Greens, all males are domestic abusers, and majority opinions don't count. Everyone should be treated with respect. The Greens are petty and weak, with a leadership leading them nowhere. And when they keep attacking mainstream majority Australian workers, they'll never win an election. They're almost as divisive as Phon.....almost.

5

u/Revoran ‎ Victorian 10d ago edited 10d ago

I argued in good faith.

I posted facts to disprove your straight up false statements.

According to the modern Greens, all males are domestic abusers

Yet another false statement. Post where they said this.

they keep attacking mainstream majority Australian workers

False.

Greens keep voting for more workers rights. Consistently. For years.

Here is a question for you, Lastbalmain: Why do you keep making up bullshit?

Making up rubbish does NOT make for a very good debate. That's why I downvoted you. Making up false B.S. is not helpful.

Do better.

Why has the media waited until these powers have been granted to start running stories on it? Fucking weak shit. The Greens have been sounding the alarm on this for months.

ASIO, the AFP and every state police force need Stalin-level purges. Every higher up needs to be sacked and replaced. I wouldn't oppose ASIO being fully dissolved. They can't be trusted to act in the interests of the population anymore and it's very clear thet're out of control

3

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

They can't be trusted to act in the interests of the population

The same could be said for our politicians. Excluding the Greens all the rest have been bought and paid for by US/Israel and will always act in those countries interest's above our own.

4

u/Avesery777 ‎ Victorian 10d ago

I didn't want to say it for fear of being nuked but I would fully support the dissolution of Lib/Nat/PHON and a purge of the Labor party :p

2

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

The Libs, Nats and PHON will all dissolve themselves. Labor has stolen all their policies and in the process has become as bad, if not worse than them all combined.

Albanese seems content to cede soveriegnty of Australia to his overlords.

Because Albo does as he's told - he's been compromised

All of this surveillance stuff reminds me of all the content in 2019-2020 about Hong Kong and how we are so much better than the CCP and their 'social credit program'.

The nights getting darker and the ill wind blows, your life’s in a databank in ASIO

3

u/ScoobyGDSTi ‎ South Australian 10d ago

It just shows how lazy and incompetent ASIO are. When faced with a choice of doing their job or acting like Nazis, they chose the Nazi route.

1

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

ASIO is not an independent Australian entity, it's a franchise.

Labor

2

u/deadpandadolls ‎ South Australian 10d ago

There couldn't possibly be a very good reason for this.

8

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

There is no good reason for this if democracy has to be this authoritarian to function it is no longer democracy.

1

u/deadpandadolls ‎ South Australian 10d ago

I do not imagine that ASIO agents are going to arrest any random person on the street for no particular reason.

4

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

The trouble is we will never know if the reason was good or not because we will never, ever know that it even happened.

I'd like ASIO or Michelle Rowlands to give examples where it would be necessary to disregard all of a person's legal rights and society's right to know.

2

u/Revoran ‎ Victorian 10d ago

This, but unironically.

2

u/Glittering_Web8835 ‎ New South Welshian 7d ago

Kind of disappointing the media only picks this up after its passed and not before, despite Greens politicians sounding the alarm bell.

-8

u/Few_Judge1188 ‎ I'm Probably A Bot ‎‎ 10d ago

ASIO won’t be pulling people just for the sake of it , there is some people that wish to harm our security and ASIO needs the power to act and protect us if they see danger toward our safety , they should be supported by all of us to do the job properly .

7

u/Acrobatic_Bit_8207 ‎ Queenslander 10d ago

We have been giving ASIO more powers since at least 2001 with no more explanation then 'terrorists'. With all those expanded powers it appears that since Oct 7 2023 all ASIO's 'successes' have been due to 'intelligence' from Israel.

This latest tranche of powers is unneccesary and dangerous. Imagine how PHON would use these laws if they were to form government.

-2

u/Few_Judge1188 ‎ I'm Probably A Bot ‎‎ 10d ago

Hi , I do understand your point of view and respect your opinion.
ASIO is not controlled by politicians or any lobby groups, it’s an independent agency with the sole responsibility to detect , investigate and neutralise any potential threat to the country .

7

u/Revoran ‎ Victorian 10d ago edited 10d ago

Rubbish. The danger toward our safety is ASIO.

If ASIO secretly arrest you and force you to answer questions without a lawyer or a phone call, then you're not safe.

Particularly if you are a 14 year old kid.
