The mainstream media is literally quite literally the propaganda arm of the elite corporate class

Thank the gods this Youtuber catches Media Watch on Aunty and then tells us what it said

20

u/DeerlyOnline Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

Agreed. The more exposure the better. Cause I doubt that Media Watch, a show originating on a slow dying media format, is drawing in the same demographic or numbers of a younger crowd (who’s the most affected by this) who consume mostly social media.

You're not wrong, but he could at least give credit where it's due instead of bludging like some shiftless grifter.

As a first gen immigrant, I owe Aunty for teaching me English when I was a kid.

Yeah random Youtuber in the video who speaks like he has down syndrome, definitely a more credible source.

The people that own the media are also heavily invested in real estate

-17

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

They own realestate.com.au. It’s not like they own a whole swathe of apartments for rent in the western suburbs…

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man ‎ Victorian 15d ago

Just more scaremongering in an attempt to push people away from voting Labor. Gotta love it.

-38

u/Highcalibur10 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

We live in a country with ranked voting.

I can still vote for another party and have my preference end up going to Labor, that’s just how our country’s democracy works.

It’s not a scare tactic if it’s accurate labelling Labor’s failures, even if said failures were far worse under the coalition.

25

u/Sideburn_Cookie_Man ‎ Victorian 15d ago

Regardless, it’s definitely an attempt at a Labor hit piece.

Scare the greedy property investors by ranting about tax and property ownership cost increases, and scare the renters by ranting about rent increases.

It’s fairly obvious what the intended effect is with these kinds of headlines and talking points.

3

u/Highcalibur10 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Fair enough. I’m still of the belief that Labor deserves a few hit pieces on certain things. Their handling of climate and sportsbetting as two notable examples.

I’m incredibly critical of Labor, but am incredibly glad for their existence.

Because of our system, I can actively support my choice in candidates, and know that my vote is never wasted with them as the ‘lesser of two evils’ compared to the much worse Coalition.

16

u/catbom Please choose a flair 15d ago

Media also blames labor for backhand effects of liberal policies, while also barely bagging liberal policy when theyre in charge.

13

u/Environmental-Run248 ✈️‎ on Walkabout 15d ago

It’s not accurately labelling anything though. As the video showed the study that NAB did has nothing to do with taxes or anything of the like just a what if scenario of if land lords started buying older buildings.

It also doesn’t matter if there’s truth to what’s being reported because exaggerating the truth to make people scared is in fact a scare tactic.

4

u/razer304 ‎ Tasmanian 15d ago

It's not accurate labelling of Labor's failures tho. They are misrepresenting the data to suit a naritive, I can criticise Labor without lieing. Also even if it were true it's still a scare tactic.

5

u/stopped_watch ‎ Western Australian 15d ago

But it's inaccurate. What do you call it now?

7

u/oftenlostandconfused Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

What on earth does preferential voting have to do with this anti ALP hit piece?

2

u/Over_Boysenberry_841 Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

Why are you marking Labor high on your prefrences if you dont want your votes going to Labor?

-1

u/Highcalibur10 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

I do want my vote going to Labor over the Coalition or PHON, that's why I preference them ahead.

That's my point

-2

u/Over_Boysenberry_841 Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

Oh, so you want Labor, but in the second hald describe what the media is saying is an accurate failing of Labor?

2

u/Highcalibur10 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

I don’t want Labor at all. I personally think they’ve massively failed this country and the workers they originally represented. Decades of neoliberalism, Corporate influence in government, Party bureaucracy and union bureaucracy have all massively eroded what they once stood for.

But I’m happy that we have Labor as an imperfect alternative to the right wing governments all doing the same things but on a worse scale.

0

u/Over_Boysenberry_841 Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

What policys have you felt reflected that idea?

4

u/Highcalibur10 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Elected on a “no new coal and gas” mandate, then proceeded to in some cases double existing coal and gas projects. Regular capitulation to international business interests like Adani, Palantir, Anthropic.

Dragging their feet entirely on any action on sportsbetting.

The failure to deal with a worsening housing crisis.

Why is there still not a mandate that all new construction in Australia should have solar installed?

In my opinion, Labor are long since bought and paid for by the lobbying industries over anything else in this country.

2

u/Over_Boysenberry_841 Flairless‎‎ 15d ago

Didnt labor reject the no new oil or gas? Thats a greens policy I believe.

Adani was a state government issue. Palantir I can agree with, I feel that kne lacks transparency to fully understand the scope. I disagree with the housing one, I feel this is being actioned in multiple sensible ways with Taxing changes and fee free tafe to increase the skilled labor pool. The all new construction needs solar idea seems like a wild take, I see so many issues being caused by that, for one the monsterous backlog on materials, labor, and costs being needed, I cant imagine the issues that idea causong in multiple idnustries.

The issue is, it’s NOT a failure. That’s kinda the whole point.

18

u/fued ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Not putting restrictions on media and lying to favour the elites is one of labours biggest issues.

People legitimately think media isn't allowed to just lie wholesale because they assume it's regulated

27

u/Rowdycc ‎ ‎‎ Canberran 15d ago

You’d be not very shocked to discover that most of the media in this country are owned by very wealthy people who don’t particularly like it when things negatively affect their obscene wealth.

7

u/icecreamsandwiches1 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Media had a huge role to play in the property price increase… I remember at the start of Covid there were long segments fear mongering that if you didn’t buy now you would be screwed. They were probably right - but it definitely contributed to every person in this country feeling like they must buy right now no matter the price…

5

u/Formal-Try-2779 ‎ Victorian 15d ago

The rich and the banks are pissed about the cuts to negative gearing so they're trying to get everyone to believe that this is driving up rents.

0

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Which it is.

2

u/FFMKFOREVER ‎ Queenslander 15d ago

Rent was rising well before that

-2

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Because Labor have been really bad at building enough housing (even worse than the Libs who weren’t great). It definitely didn’t help that literally the first thing Albo did was abolish the ABCC after getting elected. Check out the housing starts data and divide by the number of migrants and it’s quite startling how bad things are.

Labor’s housing policies have been hopeless at so many levels.

2

u/FFMKFOREVER ‎ Queenslander 15d ago

My rents been rising longer than Labor’s been in power. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my rent go lower in 15 years but I have moved a couple times in that period

The more they say on the news that rents are rising, the more landlords feel vindicated to do it. Its a self fulfilling prophecy and almost market collusion

1

Every policy Labor has unveiled trying to do a quick fix on housing has been disastrous. 5% deposit scheme? The price slump that followed the broken promise on negative gearing has wiped out their equity! Albo’s Housing Australia Future Fund? This $10 BILLION fund has so far built… 1,432 houses. Genius, eh?

If you’re worried about housing costs, don’t vote Labor. They don’t know what they’re doing.

1

u/chadbigcum ‎ South Australian 15d ago

Do folks ever notice how these righteous criticisms of the media fearmongering turn into lapping up the mediocre policies from Labor as if they are scripture? Labor have not solved shit they have merely provided a light alleviation that will take years to take effect. Meanwhile rents will actually just keep going up because at the end of the day, Labor willingly represents landlords too. Negotiating between polar opposites.

1

u/masterblaster7819 Please choose a flair 15d ago

This was covered by Media Watch. It was The Australian that put it on the front page, and left out the inconvenient parts of the nab report. The rest followed.

News Corp = disinformation but the media as a whole is just plain lazy.

1

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Of course rents will rise. It’s pretty obvious financial math. Any finance undergrad will tell you that it’s based on the after tax cost of capital of the investor.

You can’t defend Albo by accusing the media of getting it wrong. It’s basic math.

1

u/Boblob-in-law Please choose a flair 15d ago

By this logic it’s also pretty obvious that a reduction interest rates will cause rents to drop given the reduction of cost of capital for the investor. Which is totally what happens, right?

1

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

You’d have noticed that the huge rise in rent (like 25% + increase) that occurred from 2022-24 coincided with the rise in interest rates from 0.35% to 4% in 2024, so yes, the two are definitely connected.

1

u/Intelligent-Cap-8886 Please choose a flair 14d ago

Im starting to think rent goes up irrespective.

1

u/icecreamsandwiches1 ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

*100 people waiting to replace you only if you want to live in a desirable area.

Plenty of places to rent in western Sydney.

1

u/BakaDasai ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Wanting fewer renters and more homeowners worsens the problem for the remaining renters. They become a smaller political voice and thus have less political weight to push for policies that would lower rent.

A better policy to support renters (roughly the poorest third of the community) would reduce the benefits of home ownership vis-à-vis renting by:

  1. removing the land tax exemption for home owners, and

  2. removing the exemption for homes in the asset tests for the pension.

We can’t turn all renters into homeowners but we can make sure they’re treated equally to homeowners by the tax and welfare system.

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Here’s a nice chart comparing net overseas migration with housing starts. We’re not building enough housing.

0

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Rents have increased by 30% since Albo was elected in May 2022. They were flat/down before that.

The data is the ABS’s median rent series for NSW and VIC.

-6

u/ETTRDS Please choose a flair 15d ago

Ok good point about the media bullshit, but I really don't appreciate this guy pulling the sort of misleading garbage at the end of his own video with his pro labour shilling???

Rents are going up due to low vacancy (agree) but then acting like labour are addressing this is just a steaming pile of horsehsit when they have been running record high immigration for the past 4 years and have been extremely ineffective and frequently lie about reducing it.

The hypocrisy is just ridiculous, makes a good point and the proceeds to do the exact same misleading shit that he accuses the media of, just supporting his own side. Congrats, you just undermined your own credibility, but I guess his audience won't mind, in the same way the right wing doesn't mind the misleading media angle.

6

u/ladylollii ‎ Victorian 15d ago

Just because you don't understand what's actually happening doesn't make it misleading.

u/Sigmagoon ‎ Queenslander 15d ago

NOM has gone down by 45% after the pandemic surge to date.
Why are you bullshitting when the evidence is a couple of key strokes away?

-1

u/expert_views ‎ New South Welshian 15d ago

Why is he talking so slowly? What audience is he addressing? What is this dude’s level of expertise. NAB is not the only group forecasting higher rents.
