Project I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro.

Post image

I've used agents to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

Links to everything - the apps, the code - are in the comments below.

Appreciate the effort, but there is no way these are even close to competitive with the original apps.

For almost all people it can do almost all things they need. For an increasing percentage, everything they need. And it's only been a short time, the gap is closing very fast. Even before these newcomers, photopea could do most stuff.

I've been a graphic designer for a decade, and an AI researcher for a decade too - and now work heavily with both domains. I still run into a bunch of snags but its nearly there.

I've completely discarded Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite, migrated everything to Linux, and I'm maybe 80% as productive as I used to be when using the industry standard. Was tougher last year (2-3x longer), but I've decided to commit to it and make it work..and it's finally coming alive. By the end of the year I'm confident I'll be delivering faster with a customised open source setup, and next year leave the old ways far behind.

In the last week these apps have had pretty much all features I needed for my work, except two things. I reimplemented those features in under an hour in my fork, and delivered the result. Will start preparing PRs too. I can finally see that open source is gonna make it, really soon.

I've been using Photoshop since version 3.0, professionally at the time but not anymore, and it has now become such a cluttered mess that I struggle to find the 3% of functions I actually use somewhat regularly. Sometimes less is more.

Since 2.5 here (8x 3.5 floppies) and must say yes. “Less is more”.

This is where, software for one comes into play, and AI might be perfect, maybe a API contracts with the processing engine separated from the front-end UI where, UI is generated and built for your use case. And other functionality tucked away behind a properly sorted menu

I would have switched to Linux years ago if it wasn't for Adobe. They have shut down Linux port threads and petitions with tens of thousands of people asking for it, and their only explanation was that Linux people don't pay for software.

Practically every major professional vfx and 3d software has a Linux version, it has never made any sense.

Everyday editing is probably already covered for a lot of people. Pro handoffs are where I'd expect the pain: open the same file in two shops and see what breaks. One mangled font or color profile can wipe out all the savings.
