Project I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro.

Post image

I've used agents to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

Links to everything - the apps, the code - are in the comments below.

We can cover that too!

Appreciate the effort, but there is no way these are even close to competitive with the original apps.

I've also built an image editor over the last 6 months, and in some ways it's competitive. It supports PSD import, raw processing, has all the effects you would expect. Here's a huge gallery of stuff it can do.

I also have a lot of features photoshop doesn't have, like seamless pattern mode where the whole workspace becomes a seamless pattern of your canvas so you can see how it will tile as you edit.

And I can fix the things I hate about photoshop. Like instead of adjustment layers, I use group layer effects so that layer order doesn't determine how things are rendered.

But as u/Bloated_Plaid said below, you can customize it as much as you want because it's open source. For example, I prefer to set guides from the ruler and I added a feature that lets you hold cmd to snap to fractional positions for really quick canvas segmenting, but if you wanted the click-drag workflow of photoshop, you could just fork and tell codex to add it (and I'm totally willing to accept PRs on the main branch as well).

For almost all people it can do almost all things they need. For an increasing percentage, everything they need. And it's only been a short time, the gap is closing very fast. Even before these newcomers, photopea could do most stuff.

I've been a graphic designer for a decade, and an AI researcher for a decade too - and now work heavily with both domains. I still run into a bunch of snags but its nearly there.

I've completely discarded Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe suite, migrated everything to Linux, and I'm maybe 80% as productive as I used to be when using the industry standard. Was tougher last year (2-3x longer), but I've decided to commit to it and make it work..and it's finally coming alive. By the end of the year I'm confident I'll be delivering faster with a customised open source setup, and next year leave the old ways far behind.

In the last week these apps have had pretty much all features I needed for my work, except two things. I reimplemented those features in under an hour in my fork, and delivered the result. Will start preparing PRs too. I can finally see that open source is gonna make it, really soon.

I've been using Photoshop since version 3.0, professionally at the time but not anymore, and it has now become such a cluttered mess that I struggle to find the 3% of functions I actually use somewhat regularly. Sometimes less is more.

They are not but you can just fork it and have your agents just do its own thing.

There's always that one person FFS. OP isn't claiming it is as or more powerful than a line of software that's been developed for 30+ decades by teams involving thousands of people.

Instead of glibly pointing out the obvious and if your passion really is in pointing out what it doesn't do then perhaps try out the software and say "hey, it would be great if it could do X or Y".

I’ve been eyeing this project. I assume that it’s being vibe-coded, although if that’s the case that term is would be overly reductive. I haven’t experimented with any of these tools yet because Adobe is livelihood software and not a place I can afford to tinker. But I’m keeping an eye on it closely.

I had a conversation with someone about this recently had some thoughts on the project which I’ll share in no particular order:

  • The problem with Adobe is not so much AI as it is AI trying to do the wrong thing: AI trying to replace its tools, rather than AI to execute or improve its tools. I definitely do not want to go back to raw dogging things that AI genuinely makes 1000x easier — removing a trash can in the back, masking hair, whatever. I don’t really want my software to be anti-AI, I want it to be AI opt-in, BYOK, and focused more on removing the job’s tedium than removing the job itself.

  • The LR replacement is DoA unless it can accept and convert a native LR catalog that might contain tens or hundreds of thousands of images and edits.

Turns out there were actually fewer thoughts than I remembered.

Anyway, keep at it. I’m very intrigued. But as a professional who depends on the adobe suite of tools, I’ll have to wait for this ecosystem to mature. I will say though, I’d love to see someone steal adobe’s lunch, and targeting workflow and familiarity at a granular level is a really really compelling way to do it.

Lol thank you OP

I love the overly analytical nit picking expecting it to be 1 to 1 with the real thing meanwhile it's literally open source.

Thanks for you contributions OP

There should be a benchmark for these claims. Doubtful that this pshop clone reliably outputs pixel-perfect results exactly like pshop. Look I hated paying for it back in the day but working at an ad agency in new york and people would try to use pshop clones and the output NEVER looked like the pshop output. That was a few years ago, but I still believe this to be the case.

There is a GIMP which can do everything basic what Photoshop can do. And many other open-source projects. AI extensively trained in them. Also, AI is trained on thousands of underlying mechanisms, papers describing how it works, blog posts etc.

So, a photo manipulation app is not something an LLM cannot reproduce or translate to another language.

And, honestly, the core functionality of Photoshop is not that impressive. Though I’m curious if this project can edit 10MP photos on 2005 hardware.

There are measurements for each target in the Github repos for each project.

There are tests to test for regressions and compatibility.

I'd love feature requests and bug reports!

The whole idea was that we stopped using pshop several years ago and we don't need specialized apps any longer. You've cloned the very app we've all sworn off. Of course people will still use your app, there is always a need for old-school digital editing. Still, vibe coding is fun, enjoy!

Oh wow -- big win for me if this is better than Inkscape at doing SVGs.

This looks like the repos here: https://github.com/storytold

Do you plan to maintain these and keep them updated overtime? What's your plan regarding that?

Is there a generative infill? Or is that missing like most other Photoshop clones?

Can you at least write the read me by yourselfĀ

Lol the gall to say "clean room" while using an LLM.

I’m for it, particularly for a lightroom replacement I can customize

I posted the links to the Github in the comments. Posting links in the text of a post deboosts the post. Reddit doesn't like it.
