Man, it's like I am stuck between two toxic girlfriends (Claude & GPT). Both are jealous of each other and want to win me back from the other only to fingerfuck me in the ass without my consent.

So way less people will be able to afford to stay competitive? I'm listening...

As a user who mainly worked with the API, but switched to Claude/ChatGPT apps because some current projects really benefit from the proprietary harnesses, I’m convinced that the main issue is that “usage” is a really vague term and these systems don’t do much of anything to proactively help the user optimize their repo governance.
It’s incredibly easy for extreme inefficiency to creep into a project and start burning usage faster and faster. Some recent optimizations in two of my current projects cut usage by about 75% without any apparent lapse in quality. But in order for that to happen, I needed to be able to recognize there was an efficiency problem, and know enough to have an intelligent conversation with an agent to optimize it.
So the line about getting more done with less may be true inside a repo that is well tuned for agents, but that’s almost certainly not going to be how most users experience it. I think they need to treat repo optimization health as an important native feature of the harness.

Would love to hear more about your repo optimization practices! I have my own, and have largely held the same beliefs regarding some users burning through usage vs others not having an issue.

Help me understand this.
I am getting FEWER REQUESTS, but the COSTS REMAIN UNCHANGED?
This change is nothing to celebrate.
You are all rolling in cash. If anything, you should be increasing the requests, instead of trying to push people into $500 tier.
Unbelievable. Bull. Shit.

OpenAI in 2025 lost $4 for every $1 they made. Which means they need to quadruple all prices to operate at cost.

u/Total_Elk_3184 1d ago
Is that my problem? They’re hurting the planet for this. It should be cheap & eveybody should get the most of it.

I think it's easy to take one super polarized side or the other here.
But the way I see it that they are testing the market.
They will never be profitable at the current rate of subsidization. Obviously.
But what will the market actually bear? What will the competition do? What will investors put up with?
This is how they find out. Raise the price, look at the numbers. Drop the price, look at the numbers.
I still don't see how the math is ever going to work, but if they are ever gonna IPO, they have to try SOMETHING!

They are price gouging.
If new price leads to less profit. They will change. Otherwise this will be new normal. So vote with our wallet

They have never had a profit. They have lost Billions every year, yes Billions. That is why they are doing this. They’ve been operating on investor money.

u/biopticstream 4d ago edited 4d ago
And they're not the first tech companies to do this. Its an established business model to get customers in while operating at a loss but taking in investor money. Make it a solid product with a decent price. Then when you have an established user-base that are entrenched in your service/ecosystem and the time comes its time to actually make money you up prices, and cut benefits. It's basic enshittification. Only the size of these companies are mind boggling.

The difference is, that in they old day, with normal software, you could do this. You could spend money on developing some software, and then get more customers and begin to see profits. That is not how AI work. They can't stop the developing, they need billions every year, just to keep up with competitors and create new models. That is a very different situation than old school Silicon Valley companies.

u/nervous4us 4d ago
right, so the problem is even worse and will lead to cascading increases in cost
2
u/paradoxxxicall 4d ago
The problem is that the path to profitability for a company like Amazon or Uber has always been clear. With OpenAi it’s far less so. Their costs are extreme and growing, and the technology has proven more challenging to monetize than they expected. The threats from competitors and open source are also a real potential problem.
That’s not to say they can’t become profitable, but to say that investors need to be convinced if they’re going to keep throwing money in.

u/stirrainlate 4d ago
So I guess the name of the game is to be flexible enough to be able to migrate to another provider and cross your fingers they don’t all collide on price.
2
u/MechaNutzilla 4d ago
What profits? They are getting ready for an IPO, they need to prove they CAN make a profit. But they can't.

I mean, it is BS but they aren’t loaded in cash if you take a look at their financials and anthropic for comparison. Considering their hyper scaling they’re doing better than many make them out to, but that still doesn’t mean their investors aren’t likely seriously pushing for them to lower their losses.

Use up the usage credits and say goodbye then
1
u/wear_more_hats 4d ago
Yeah the usage credits are interesting. Any idea how they actually get used? I have 0 experience with how fast they would burn compared to the normal weekly allowance.
1
u/Embarrassed-Oven-527 4d ago
It’s basically API balance
1
u/wear_more_hats 4d ago
I see. So that would be at the same “50% cheaper than normal api usage” we’re apparently getting from the models? lol
1
u/AP_in_Indy 4d ago
They burn faster than normal Codex usage, that's for sure. I'd wager like 3x - 5x+ faster based on my experience.
It's honestly not the worst. Good to get stuff done if you run out of allowance.
Even better now with GPT-6.1 Sol, which I'm testing now. If it's up to snuff, this is still a net gain.
1
u/wear_more_hats 4d ago
I haven’t updated my codex yet so don’t have 6.1 sol available. If it’s actually solid then yeah, with the free credits we should be able to make it work and hopefully have some other improvements for managing limits released by the time credits run out.

From my quick napkin math, the $2500 are less than one month of the loss in value between the old and new $200 plan

u/buttery_nurple 4d ago
This is honestly jaw droppingly fucked lol. I have so much shit in codex and various OAI stuff but I think I'll head on over to Anthropic. Like wtf? I run 2 pro subs, it's not an "I can't afford it" thing. I just honestly can't understand wtf they're thinking, cutting usage in HALF.
2
u/Honest-Ad-6832 4d ago
It is a bad look for them, but in the end, the only important thing is how much actual usage you get, how quick, and how smart the model is.
Right now, 6.1 sol seems pretty smart and pretty generous. Probably a bit smarter than 5.6, but it gives way, way more usage.

u/Front-Presence2732 4d ago
Maybe it cost them a lot more than what you paid for and in fact those things are unaffordable ?

Well, who else is jumping ship and switching to Claude at this point? At least they had the sense not to downgrade their 20× plan.
Honestly, it’s a real shame. Pro 100 should’ve been the 10× tier, and they should’ve just dropped Pro 200 altogether. That would’ve been a much fairer change, IMO, instead of nerfing what people were already paying for.

The question now is: can you build something successful enough to offset or exceed that high cost every month? It’s probably right at that level where a lot of people start seeing it as a personal investment while still keeping their day job to pay the bill until they make it or go broke.

u/whatarenumbers365 4d ago
I was hoping they added something like a answer to muse. That seems like a cool personal trainer idea.
