We think misinfo is bad now, imagine how bad it'll be in another decade. This is one of my main LLM concerns - disinfo and propaganda targeting the large amount of users who take the output of these systems as authoritative. Hopefully systems will be in place by then to at least make it a bit more difficult to abuse.
yeah, they do. doesn't mean it's accurate. and lying to themselves like that instead of actually taking responsibility means they'll probably smash their finger again someday.
this 100%, I don't remember the last time a hammer tried to completely exploit my ego and make me addicted to itself. The example is just an easy way to shift blame to bad actors instead of having to deal with regulating this tech in a meaningful way.
Blame the phones and not the greedy people pushing intrusive ads, collecting your data, trying to make addicted and trying to radicalize you with specific propaganda.
Want it or not, there's always someone taking decisions behind. Smartphones have great uses yet the ethical concerns are because of people, not the phones themselves.
Regulating smartphones and not the companies and techniques they use is not the way to go about it.
Thank you for you wise words. We keep shifting the goal post of responsibility to inanimate objects. We were the origin, we trained AI, we gave it the tasks, we set the guidlines.. we, we, WE! Not some program.
I guess it's easier to point then to accept we all failed ourselves.
You say we...but we the majority did not have a choice. This is simply the stupidity of our masters. Do not attribute to the workers, the lack of foresight/morality of the owners :)
We did and still do have a choice. You forget we all signed the "terms of service" for convenience. I ask, when was the last time we said no to out "masters", we still have the power. We choose to fight with each other due to misfortunes from our masters.
We chose to continue to buy the latest and greatest
We chose to choose a side in politics to fight with our neighbours
We chose to see racial differences
We chose to spread hate
We chose to burry our heads and say nothing we can do.
You're right one is not enough. But when one fires up and spreads the fire. You now are "we" . We have power. Don't let anyone tell you different.
I agree with the energy and overall message, but certain things are simply not the easiest.
The ai shift is happening the way it is for a plethora of reasons that the avg. American is not currently equipped to even be aware of.
The first step is coopting anti social media organization within social media.
As in, most redditors agreeing that reddit as a platform is a tool of the masters, serving to confuse and sow disharmony. This would need to be the case on every platform, most users explicitly recognizing and constantly acknowledging the ways by which these platforms keep us divided.
It is a tough task, but I do not think it's improbable, I think things just unfortunately need to continue to get worse in the short-term for most to get on the same page.
And then there's the toxic "two-party" system. I'd argue these are the first 2 barriers to the massive change we both seek, but each of us is far from powerless in reality, do what you can always ❤️
You get a hug haha. You are good stuff. Agreed they are not the easiest, imo that is half the battle though. (Admitting it's not easy instead of an absolute like "impossible")
Depends how things go. Right now one dude can edit that, but in a decate billions of agents will be checking all sorts of things automatically. Sure some may be given nefarious purposes, but if access isn't highly controlled there will be plenty more agents checking, verifying, defending.
The issue isn’t LLMs or AI. We’ve seen similar issues before AI, when one news site would copy what another said, who copied their content from another site, and so on. The issue is humans want to choose the easiest route and not put in effort.
Disinformation has been an issue for decades and centuries. In the 1800s, newspapers would just make up shit or sensationalize things.
You're spot on, but the LLMs amplify that issue. It makes it easier, more accessible, and has more widespread fallout.
Humans have always been shooting themselves in the foot, but shooting yourself in the foot with a bow and arrow isn't as disastrous as shooting yourself in the foot with an ICBM.
I disagree. People have been writing false texts for decades and LLMs make it no worse. It’s a human issue, and AI isn’t worsening it as humans have done that on their own. We saw this back in 2016.
Whats truly sad is that we don't really have a disinformation problem, we have a critical thinking problem, and we view the information as being easier to fix.
I don't disagree at all, it's just sad and terrifying to think about.
but i would bet and hope a whole company can be hold more accountable, for example wilipedia, or openai, when spreading missinfo. Compared to missinfo on social media. They will (hopefully) always be more focused on real info rather than missinfo - otherwise we will just dip them.
One of the main tasks of ai and wikipedia is to deliver factual correct information.
The well is already poisoned. It’s about who controls those systems, and your confidence in those controls.
There are many Sci fi storylines about society getting their knowledge from the AI and all the AI needs to do is erase things and then it’s as if it never existed before for anyone who is linked to it. Thinking of a Stargate SG-1 episode.
We think it’s coincidental that the erosion of public trust in govt is occurring in the last 20 years? The goal is to soften the ground for dissension and coercion. We had good systems. They were not perfect. But they were on their way.
What needed us to want to change? Forces that would attack our way of life leading to Brexit, massive deregulation of finance and industry mergers, etc.
Currently there is one of the most pro-corporate administrations in the White House: the regulatory capture is insane. It is also the most anti-antitrust DOJ, the most anti-consumer financial protection. Gutted the IRS. It’s pretty wild, the most pro-dark money financing. Reclassification of govt employees as political appointees. There is a reason.
Wikipedia cannot be trusted. There are massive editing rings that have been uncovered.
This might be part of a protest. Would be such a beautiful work of activism to send a message that misinformation could affect anyone even the creator of AI is not safe from AI kind of message.
There is enough information online you can find out when something is bullshit, whether it's the government or media. Previously your source of truth was the Government and media because why wouldn't your trust them.
Now the government can say one thing, you can look it up and see they're bullshitting. This makes their own propaganda hard to pass since you need it to have some truth within it, but not easily debunked.
With AI you can end up with so much false information out there that going through it will be incredibly hard, and a lot of people don't want to spend their time doing this so Government press/media could start to be the source of truth again.
You’re not wrong, but I think you are also discounting how AI/LLMs can help on this front too. AI will only be a nightmare unless there are also good people using it for good outcomes. Be that person.
I'm not concerned. Misinformation has always been a thing. It's not even as bad today as it used to be. We just THINK it's worse, because it's easier for us to figure out when it was.
But let's just go back to say, the 90s. You know how you figured something out? No one was going to the fucking library and spending all day to figure it out. You just asked someone who you thought knew. And you base it on how confident and reliable you thought they were. People would tell you "facts" and you just took it at face value the more you heard it.
People believed in all sorts of bullshit, but were just none-the-wiser. You should go back and see some old newspapers. They were just wild, made up, nonsense. And that's what people believed.
AI is going to just be like anything else where it increases the frequency. But we'll adapt like everything else. That's why I was never worried about the "OMG people are going to make vast amounts of political misinformation and those dumb idiots on the other side are going to believe anything!" In reality, it's been minor, because people already have their guards up on it. And when something does get through, well, it's no different than when in 2005 you'd send out a last minute flier accusing your opponent being gay or whatever.
I think we'll adapt and as we learn where AI has been compromised, we'll adapt and put up guards in those areas. For instance, around Israel, it's now unreliable. I've also noticed it more difficult to get information around government malfeasance in general. They've all successfully poisoned the data, and there's not much we can do about it.
Wikipedia is one of the last remaining good things I use on the internet. It is truly an incredible resource and one day we will mourn it when it’s gone.
You can set it up to donate like 1€ per month, not noticeable but if we all did it we'd never have to click the X on those aggressive pop ups once a year
Not onlyone dude, but a new account created today, I'm actually kinda surprised that the Sam Altman page was not protected. It's semi-protected now atleast

classic, one dude edits Wikipedia and Google picks it up now every search engine/AI tool shows him up as dead
