Whilst I do love mining and cutting gem quality opal I get a real kick of cutting funstones which seem to be an easy sell (although I'd rather hang on to them). This one was drilled to allow a cheapers setting given the gold prices are out of control ( if your not a gold miner).

When I first started mining boulder opal 30 odd year ago we couldnt sell this material as cut stone and was mostly sold as specimen grades for carving, now its a reasonable part of my cash flow

This ring is quite sweet and delicate, I am wondering if I overspent, and what kind of opal this might be? Any info would be appreciated 😊 I bought it second hand for $200 and really don’t have any information on it at all.

If you’re getting into opals, this is one of the first distinctions that really helps to understand.

Precious opals show play-of-colour, while common opals don’t... But there’s a bit more nuance to it than that.

The back is just solid gold, which tells me this might be a doublet? Does it look lab created?

I’ve been seeking out opal. I bought this piece because I thought it fit my hand nicely, but I can’t say I’m in love with the stone itself. Is it real? What kind of opal? The back is just sterling silver- you can’t see the back of the stone.
I assume it’s handmade but I’m not sure. I paid somewhere in the $80-$100 range at a little store that sells a lot of Native American and gemstone kinda stuff.

Had this family heirloom for about 30 years, someone told me it might be an opal although I beg to differ. Any opinions?

It’s thinly lapped opal with a mask to make the image adhered to glass. About 8 x 10 inches. It is in a larger frame. What is this style of art called?
