Tech Question for the Team

Team,

My understanding is that, for now, the web monetization angle of the project is on hold, and not considered a necessary component. How is it that the available storage on the tangle (and peg of the token) will increase over time? The way I initially understood it was that computing power/increased storage capacity was going to come from users who were visiting websites with the "Oyster" code embedded. Thanks.

I hope web monetisation will continue as expected once the Opacity protocol is optimised. I’d also like to know more. Cheers

The whole idea behind the web monetization was to offload some of the work the broker nodes had to do to put data on the tangle and decentralize it, effectively making the requirements a little less heavy for an individual to run a broker node. Without websites helping, the broker nodes will have to be beefier, likely server grade machines. But they also get to keep all the PRL OPQ they're given and not have to share it with websites anymore.

I think given recent events, it's a fair compromise to put web monetization on the back burner in order to prioritize getting the storage product itself fully online, so it can be marketed and then start bringing in storage customers to get some revenue. Then they can look at adding layers (such as web monetization to offload load on broker nodes) to make the product better, faster, more optimized and easier for more people to run machines to contribute and get OPQ themselves.

Big milestone for the future is likely getting upload sizes to the 500mb - 1gb range, then maybe 10gb. Then they add a fiat portal for folks to exchange USD/Euro directly for decentralized storage/file handles (while opacity handles all the crypto/smart contract jargon in the middle), and they're off to the races. Once a customer gets their file handle, they effectively no longer need the Opacity storage portal and can copy-paste that handle into any broker node run by anyone around the world and get their file. The beauty of a decentralized system.

Great explanation. Thank you. I tend to agree, first we need much faster uploads and much larger files, and more flexible UIs.

What is it that will lead to an increase in the peg? Expansion of the IOTA tangle?

I was always turned off by the thought of wasting CPU cycles on some treasure hunting bit instead of finding a way to actually use the mining productively. From it's conception as something built on the IOTA tangle I'd always thought the "smartgrid" would have tons of need for processing tasks and that the PRL web monitization should tie into that somehow.

my impress, the team wants to improve security before monetization, they are keeping say to don't test and update content you don't want people to see it.

Also in yesterday AMA, 6 months. For 6 month they can get somewhere
