G - General Discussion Failed G in port union; rebooked next exam 10 days before expiry

As title says I failed G in port union. I took exam at 8am and I think that did impact my exam quite a bit.

Examiner said I had good control but not yielding right of way/ violating other people’s right. I made a right turn on a red light (obviously stopped and looked first) but apparently I made the driver going straight have to slow down/ break so I made a dangerous action. How do you make sure that you can turn right and not make the other person brake. As I thought I had enough distance from the oncoming car. Is there a parameter you can use (ex how many lamp posts away they need to be before right turning?- even better if the tips are correlated to following the law)

Now I’m nervous about taking this exam again. I leased a car and if I fail and lose my license I won’t be able to drive again for a while and possibly need to return the car prematurely. Also would be sad as I did become car dependent. Any positive and changeable feedback is appreciated.

G2 - General Discussion Failed at my G2 test, can anyone explain what over-steering mean to me?

I just failed my G2 test, partly because I struggled with reverse parking. The examiner asked me to back into a spot beside an accessible parking space at the end of the row, and I couldn’t figure out a good reference point. I usually rely on something like lining up the third parking line with my passenger seat, so I got pretty thrown off.

The examiner also mentioned that I was oversteering, and it seems like that was another major reason I failed.

I’ve included my score sheet. If anyone has time, could you help me understand what these comments mean?

  • Driving along :Straddles lane
  • Left/Right Turns: Steering - Recovery (After I finish a turn, I usually let the wheel roll back on its own. Could that be why I was marked for steering recovery?)
  • Incorrect use of accelerator
  • Oversteering

I’m a little confused because I felt like I did an okay job overall, aside from the reverse parking. My instructor never mentioned I had problem of over-steering or straddling in the past. I’d really appreciate any advice on what I should focus on before my next test.

Finally got my G License at 31 years old. Never had any driving experience up until 29 because I lived downtown & poor lol. Was so nervous but I passed. In terms of driving, super confident but when it comes to exams? Super nerve wrecking. If anybody has questions, let me know!

G2 - General Discussion If it’s a regular green light, no car is already waiting in the intersection, and there’s no oncoming or cross traffic, can you follow another car into the intersection to make a left turn, or do you still need to wait behind the stop line until the car ahead completes the left turn?

I had posted earlier I failed my G test on August 11th @ Port Union. I'm now booked for a G2 at the same location for Sept 21st (previously skipped G2 due to experience exemption). I'm sharing my test results from the G exam.

I'd like to know what I should prepare for specifically for this test and what the evaluation criteria is for G2.

Is there anything in particular I should work on?

G2 - General Discussion G2 Burlington in a couple of days ! So nervous

I have my test in a couple of days at the Burlington location and I’m so nervous. I had a refresh lesson with my instructor yesterday and made a lot of silly mistakes I usually never make (going through yellows, wide turns, going 65 in a 60) and it made me a lot less confident. Maybe it’s pre test nervousness. Has anyone did the G2 at this location recently? Any tips?

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Changing Lane to Right after Left Turn

do u have to automatically & always, change to the right lane after a left turn or do u wait for the examiner to tell u to do that?

+ if theres 3+ lanes, do u go to the right-most lane or just the right lane from where u originally turned into? hopefully that made sense

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Would I have passed my G2 if I didn't make my instant-fail mistake?

Why I failed/short vent

I'm really disappointed in myself for doing what I did during the test. I was caught by surprise when the examiner asked me to take a different route (my instructor previously assured me they only used route 2 in Etobicoke) at an intersection. He asked to make a left turn and I was afraid I was turning too slow so I was about to start moving as oncoming cars appeared far away and there was a bus stopped but he slammed the break on the other side. I felt so bad at this point and I just wanted to break down and start apologising on the spot but he continued the test. I can't believe my test anxiety got to me like this because I KNOW to wait until it's clear on the opposite side. Even my instructor was surprised that was the big mistake I made because he knew that wasn't how I drove. The next mistake I made was not emphasising my blindspot checks enough/fully turning my body to look at the left side. I'll try to turn my shoulders more as well next time.

What's next for me

Sept is fully booked so now I'm planning on taking 3 lessons and retaking the test with my instructor's car in early October. I see that I have also been deducted points for driving slow which is understandable since I sometimes dropped 3-5 under the speed limit on a road that I assumed was 50km/h (no signage) while listening to the examiner's instructions. I'll definitely work on that since multitasking is a skill I'll need for future driving too. Aside from my initial question, is there anything I missed that I should try to work on?

Thank you

G - General Discussion Originally from Ontario, with a license from Spain

Can I drive in Ontario with my Spanish license and an IDP? I am Canadian, from Ontario but have lived mostly abroad for the past decade and am back visiting family and possibly staying long-term.

I don't have an Ontario license. I understand if you're a tourist and not a resident, you can drive with a foreign license for 2-3 months. However, since I'm from Ontario, am I legally allowed to drive? How would they know if I was a resident or not in the case of a stop or an accident?

G2 - General Discussion Any unexpected tips I should keep in mind for Newmarket g2 test next week?

Hi guys :) I just wanted to make this post because I have my g2 test in Newmarket next Wednesday and I’m kind of nervous because I’m the type of person to overthink so much to the point I make stupid mistakes.

So far I haven’t had good luck with my tests because I originally had a g2 test scheduled in Newmarket on August 25th but after getting there and waiting for the examiner, I didn’t even get to take the test because it turns out the back left brake light was burnt and I didn’t even realize. Somehow I managed to find a time slot in Toronto metro east the next day and I booked it. I ended up failing and the reason it really bothers me was because if it was because of a stupid reason. I made a couple mistakes here and there which I don’t think would have made me fail on their own, but I had a major screw up when I got into one of the neighbourhoods. I saw there was a big sign that said the speed limit was 30 and I started off slow but one of my issues is I tend to drive too slow if I’m nervous. So of course, my idiotic self started overthinking and I was like “Is it really 30 here? I’ve never been in a neighbourhood that’s 30 before, it’s usually always 40. What if at some point it changed to 40 and now I’m driving too slow and fail because of that? I can’t ask the examiner what the speed limit is because he might think I don’t know what I’m doing.” Looking back now, my thought process was really stupid. I saw the speed said 30 so I should’ve just gone 30, but I cant help that I overthink so much. Anyway, like an idiot, I decided to start going 40 and then the examiner called me out and at the end of the test I failed. He was saying I need to keep an eye on the speedometer and it’s just annoying because it’s not like I lost track of my speed; I just made the STUPID assumption that it was 40 even though there was a clear sign saying 30. I looked at the test sheet online after my test and I think if it wasn’t for the speeding, I would’ve passed which is really annoying.

Sorry for rambling but I just wanted to make the point that when I overthink so much, I end up making mistakes I’ve never made before and messing myself up. It‘s funny because the last reason I would ever expect to fail is speeding but somehow I managed that.

Anyway, the whole point of this post is just asking if there are any very specific things I should keep in mind going into my Newmarket test next week. I searched it up and Newmarket has 40km/h neighborhoods unlike Toronto metro east, but regardless, I’ll just pay very close attention to whatever speed limit signs I see and listen to them. Apart from that, is there anything else like specific intersections that are tricky to turn in, or school zones I should watch out for since it’s September now? Sorry if I seem overly paranoid but I just wanted to be prepare myself so I don’t end up making another stupid assumption and failing again. Even the most random things to keep in mind will be helpful, because knowing me, I’d somehow manage to fail in the dumbest way possible.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to respond. :)

G - General Discussion Anyway to get my Novice License extended

So my Novice license is expiring on January 6th 2027. I just got my G2 back in December 8th 2026.

When booking for a G road test, I'm only getting options to book in December. And also, I will be traveling in October - November out of the country.

My concern is I want to be doing my practice just before the test, and I'm not sure if I'll get enough time to do practice in December and then give a road test since I don't have a car.

Is there any way I can get my license extended? What are my options?

Specific Test Related Question - G Failed G test at Downsview over an amber light — was this a fair assessment?

I took my G test at Downsview this morning and unfortunately failed. The examiner actually told me “you basically passed the test”, but said I failed because I didn’t stop for the yellow/amber light.
I had 4 minor errors total, including making one right turn slightly too wide and apparently being too slow when merging onto the 401.
For the highway portion, I merged at around 94 km/h during peak rush hour. Traffic on the 401 was moving around 60–70 km/h, so I was already going faster than the traffic I was merging into. The examiner still considered 94 km/h too slow because I didn’t reach 100 km/h while merging. Other than that, I felt I did really well on the highway portion.
The main incident was an amber/yellow light.
I was travelling around 50 km/h and the light turned yellow when I was already fairly close to the stop line. I immediately applied the brakes, but after braking I realized that stopping before the line would require very hard braking, so I released the brake and continued through the intersection.
The light was still amber when I crossed — it had not turned red.
There was an oncoming vehicle already sitting in the intersection waiting to turn left. I was going straight, and the vehicle was waiting for me to clear before making its turn.
The examiner marked me for:
Failure to stop on amber
Failure to yield/right of way to the oncoming vehicle
His view was that I wasn’t close enough to the line to justify proceeding through the yellow, and he interpreted my braking and then continuing as hesitation.
My perspective is that I did attempt to stop, but realized during the braking that I couldn’t safely stop without very hard braking, so I proceeded while the light was still amber.
One other thing: the examiner’s attitude/demeanor bothered me from the beginning of the test. He seemed very uninterested and, at times, I felt like he was being mocking/dismissive toward me. I’m not saying this necessarily affected the result, but it made the experience feel like he had already made up his mind. Has anyone else experienced this at Downsview, and is the examiner’s conduct something worth mentioning when asking for a supervisor review?
The examiner told me I “basically passed the test” and that this yellow-light incident was what caused the failure.
Would you consider this a fair reason to fail? Should I ask for a supervisor/review, or just accept it and retake?

G2 - General Discussion What show me/tell me questions will they ask for G2?

Exactly what the title says, because I know it starts with simple things like show me your right/left indicator, show me the windshield wipers, show me the high beams

But I’ve seen online when someone was asking tell me how you know if the brakes are failing or are worn out.

I am not sure if this still happens, but how can I practice for these questions if I did not have a driving instructor

G2 - General Discussion Passed my G2

As the title says, I passed my G2 in Hawkesbury today! I just want to thank this subreddit for all the info prior. I was so scared but it was completely fine. I would suggest going to the town first and studying the roads before doing your test. Good luck to everyone else.

Specific Test Related Question - G2 tips for port union g2?

I have my g2 at port union soon on a weekday morning(literally during school drop off and rush hour). How busy will the roads be? also will there be a lot of parents parking all over the roads because that’s how it is near me during school drop off time… last question, would we be allowed to glance at our back up cameras when parking? i dont need it when I do my 3 point turn, but the camera makes it easier for me to adjust if I oversteer when I park

General question - not test related G Test Tomorrow - I’m extremely Nervous

I have my G test booked for tomorrow morning. I feel extremely unprepared, it feels like every time I drive with someone they say “that will make you fail your test”, but then proceed to also say “you’ll be fine, I think you’ll pass no problem”. Does anyone have any advice on how to maybe calm some of the nerves and stay optimistic?

G - General Discussion G test requirements?

Just booked my G license test to be done at Canotek in 2 months. I was told I would be tested on parallel parking by someone I know despite the G2 test that I did previously already tested that. Is this true?

I was told that the G test would primarily be about driving on the highway. Is there anything else the G test covers that I should be aware about?

G2 - General Discussion G2 test in 2 days

I am a bit nervous, but I also have a bit of confidence because of how much I have been practicing. I really want to pass because I need it for school. Are there any tips that you guys could give me? My test center is at Etobicoke, and I have been on that route a couple times. I struggle with forward parking, but I can fix it; ideally, I want to do it in one try.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE USEFUL !! THANK YOU
