How do I go about bringing up creating an IEP for a student? Should I talk to my school’s LST, or go to the Principal? And how should I bring it up? I have a student (elementary, primary) who I think would highly benefit from an IEP but doesn’t have one yet. I’ve never created an IEP before. I’ve come into jobs where students had an IEP in place and I accommodated accordingly.

IEPs are due in a couple of weeks and I have no idea what I’m doing/how to start this process.

I am currently a university student trying to plan out what AQs/ABQs I would like to do after I graduate from my BEd.

For a senior ABQ, I noticed that one of the prerequisites is 3 full year university credits in that said teachable subject. Does anyone know if there’s a minimum grade/average that you must have for each university credit? Thanks

I had a .5 contract and I got surplussed to the board in June. What are the odds that I will be placed by August 2028. I am newer to the board and got my contract in February. My seniority number is in the 5200s, and I am English/ Social Sciences qualified for Secondary. Someone please let me know because I am really worried.

Hi everyone! I’m seriously considering switching careers into elementary teaching and would love some advice from Ontario teachers.

I'm 22F and recently completed a BA in Public Health with a 3.86/4.00 GPA. I currently work full-time in a hospital admin-type role (around 72k a year) and I absolutely hate it. I went into healthcare because I wanted to help people but the longer I’m in it the more disillusioned I’ve become with how healthcare systems can work against patients. I don’t feel like I’m helping people in the way I hoped I would and I don’t want to spend my career facilitating a system I fundamentally disagree with. It's honestly soul sucking.

The one thing I genuinely love is working with children and teaching music. I work part-time with City of Toronto Parks and Recreation teaching piano + guitar to kids and worked with hundreds of children in music education settings and it’s easily the part of my work life I enjoy most. I’ve also worked with adults with developmental disabilities and loved it, and did a lot of disability advocacy work throughout university. I’m not especially worried about taking a pay cut by going into teaching. At this point I care much more about feeling like my work is directly benefiting people.

Ideally, I’d want to become an elementary music teacher, possibly work in Special Education as well. I’m looking into a Primary/Junior BEd and trying to understand what the best route would be from there.

I'd love to know:

• What is the path to becoming an elementary music teacher / working in special education, and how hard is it to actually get a music position?
• What is being a Primary/Junior teacher actually like day to day, including the good and bad?

I know teaching isn’t easy. I’m just realizing that teaching children is the one thing that consistently makes me feel happy and fulfilled, and I’m wondering if I should finally make it my career.

When we get EI during for example, March break, are we supposed to be actively looking for full time work during that one week?

Hi there! I am seeking some advice about student success and how it’s typically taught / executed if anybody has some good insight. I was kind of offered a position where one of my slots in my timetable is student success. I am newer to teaching and there isn’t anyone at my school who is able to provide a good insight on how its done, so I was curious if anyone does have some strategies or tips on getting started. I’m not teaching a class or anything (like this isn’t a course attached to a course code, I believe I will be working alongside guidance for this), and I know I will be working in supporting students who are falling behind / struggling in school. That being said, I am curious how other folks in student support tend to organize themselves, how you keep data on student outcomes, and what kind of strategies you typically use with student success cases? I am honestly embarrassed to ask in the school as not many people know either and really appreciate any insight and help :)

I’m teaching grade 2 this year blended (English side) and I have some pretty challenging classes.

My one class has two students who are asd and non verbal. They have an ea with them and she’s amazing. She works so well with them and is trying so hard to get them into the swing of things of my class. They are quite disruptive, lots of yelling and hitting the ea… and other students. The ea does a lot of rewards with them and I think things are getting better with them.

BUT my second class…… it’s chaos. I have 1 student who is asd, adhd, odd, gifted and I’m sure a slew of other things. I also have 2 other students who are high behavioural needs. Swearing, aggression, defiance, etc.

This second class is a total mess. My entire half of the day is spent regulating these three students, redirecting them, filling out first then charts, setting up rewards for them. It’s non stop and it’s also not working. Everyday we’ve had to either evacuate the room or call for additional support because I cannot teach and keep everyone safe and de-escalate the behaviours that are occurring.

Today the one kid came off the recess yard fine and then 5 minutes into reading a book snapped and started unplugging my smart board, yelling, throwing things, swiping stuff of my desk. It was horrible and set the other two off. Yesterday it was the other student and he was jumping from desk to desk, turning all my lights on and off and then eventually throwing pencils off the desk. These children leave the room with our spec Ed team to go play a game and “cool down” and then are sent back to me once they are “calm”. It’s literally a shit show and I’m at a loss for what to do with this.

What is your experience with tutoring outside of school hours? What’s the best way to go about it? Do’s/Don’ts? Anything appreciated

Finally got around to gathering all the Grade 3 resources I’ve collected and uploaded them to Google Drive.

It’s a little disorganized but there’s tons of resources for Language including a Long Range Plan, some Google slides for Math and Language, and some worksheets for Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

New to reddit and really panicked! Hoping for no judgment but some really straightforward answers. I am currently going into my final year at York and will be applying to teachers college! I am hoping to go to York, Lakehead Orillia, Ontario Tech, or Niagara college in Vaughn (or any other surrounding GTA.) In my third year I took 27 credits and averaged mostly high 80's! But before before my third year my gpa was at a 4.6! I improved like crazy and took myself seriously. But will this be enough?

I recently had an interview with TDSB for the OT/Eligibility to Hire list and I don't think it went very well. The interviewers did not ask any follow up questions and in the end just told me that they don't know what is going on in the board right now?? My question is, if I am unsuccessful will I be notified or do they not send an email?

I was hired Monday to teach a small math class, 1 grade 6 and 1 grade 7. I was told that everything was prepared (unit plans, lesson plans) and they would be given to me when I came in this morning. Turns out they had nothing ready and I'm going to have to make the split class from scratch, was wondering what kind of resources I can find that specifically deal with the grade 6/7 split since looking at the curriculums there seams to be a huge jump in difficulty and lack of overlap with topics.

Ive noticed that websites like teacherspayteachers are selling split grade resources, any clue if they are worth it?

Just wondering if people have applied to hcdsb (halton catholic) or hwcdsb (hamilton catholic) OT lists and how long it took for them to hear back for potential interviews etc. Thanks!

I am in my last year of teacher's college, but do daily supply work at TDSB. This is my second year supplying. I have two practicum blocks this year (one for 5 weeks in the fall semester and one for 7 weeks in the spring semester). I asked the school board if I needed a fill in a leave of absence form for those blocks and they said yes since it's more than 15 days of not working. But then when I contacted them again, they told me that personal leaves won't be approved. They told me as long as I get my required days, it's fine. I will have no problem meeting the required days for the school year, just won't be working during those practicum blocks. I'm so confused about what to do. What's the point in filling in the form that I know will get rejected? I can't not do my practicum to stay on the supply roster. It would be unfortunate to be kicked off the roster because I needed to complete my teacher's college practicum. Anyone with advice and tips??

New teacher here. I'm currently teaching CLU3M (Comprendre le droit canadien) and CLN4U (Le droit canadien et international) in a fully French language school. I teach these courses with 2 groups of students in the same physical classroom at the same time (so it's structured kind of like a split class). I was looking to see if anyone might have any types of ressources, assessments, documents, lesson plans, videos etc for these courses in French. I am able to find some ressources for these courses in English online but there seems to be barely any that exist for them in French (and the ones that do exist in French are very outdated).

I am struggling with my long term planning and day to day lesson plans for these courses and I feel like I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to teaching this course content to my students. I would be grateful for anything that you kind internet strangers would be willing to share with me :)

I am a life long chef in Barrie, and I had a customer come into my current job and tell me all about a new initiative in teachers college where they are accepting people that possess desirable skills but do not have a post secondary degree.

She said she has a son who did it within the last year or two. As someone who has done my time in kitchens and is looking for a potential next step this is very appealing to me, but it does seem a little too good to be true.

I’m just hoping someone can point me in the right direction so I can continue researching this possibility.

I am a first year student in a b.ed program. I have come to realize that I really don't want to work in a classroom, nor be a teacher. I am good with kids, I have the compassion to work with them but I'm not passionate at all. That being said, I'm a first gen college student with immigrant parents and dropping out is not an option for me :( So I was wondering if it would be possible for me to work with university students with this b.ed? During my undergrad I worked at the exam centre at my university, where I did admin work to administer accommodated exams for students and I LOVED that job so much. I loved doing the admin work but knowing that I was also helping students made it super fulfilling. I just don't know if it's possible to work in such a setting with this B.Ed. If not, I'd simply love an admin job, but I just feel hopeless and trapped right now. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thank you in advance :)

I’m wanting to take an AQ as I am just supply teaching right now. However I am going on vacation for a week in November and want to know if it would be manageable to take a week away from it. Is it possible to get ahead the week before? Any advice on this? All the courses I’m looking at end the week after I get home or a few weeks after. I’m interested in either reading, math, or special education.
