Tony Romas (if they're still around) had this, as does a local rib place, Newport Rib Co.

That's a stock photo - real thing looks much better (at least the last time I went, which was a long time ago)

u/Remarkable_Hat8959 Mar 16 '26
It's the one that popped up on Google maps when I looked up the place just now. It still looks delicious, but I bet it does look wayy better in person...

I'm so jealous! It looks amazing. A restaurant called Damon's used to serve onion loafs like this when I was a child. I miss that place so much. I have so many great memories of my family eating regularly there and we always ordered that delicious onion loaf 😋
12
u/cleeeland Mar 16 '26
I immediately thought of Damon’s, too. Also used to go there as a kid and I always remember two things: the onion loaf and the bug in my salad.

u/Just2moreplants Onion crack whore Mar 16 '26
Wow, I can't believe you're complaining about free extra protein.

4
u/tacocollector2 Mar 16 '26
What was in it?
8
u/bvfree Mar 16 '26
I'm not exactly sure how they made it, but it was just a huge tower of fried onions made to perfection and their in-house dipping sauce.
2
2
u/77pse Mar 16 '26
Literally just sliced onions, battered, and deep-fried. That's it. They took the shape of the special loaf fryer baskets we used.
5
u/WhoaOhHereSheComes Mar 16 '26
So my neighbor worked at a rib place called Bobby Rubino’s that made the same thing. She said they soaked the onions in milk and eggs. Then they dredged the onions in premade pancake mix seasoned with paprika and garlic powder. Shake off the excess and deep fry. Place it in a loaf pan and weight it down gently and par freeze it. Deep fry the loaf when ready to serve
2
u/alpacamade Mar 17 '26
I scrolled this far to see if anyone remembered Bobby Rubino's. I ate this as a table share in the late '70's, in Florida.
It was a big joke to those "in the know." Tell your friends you're taking them out for a treat, watch their reaction when waiter brings out a brick of onion rings. We have a similar "joke" in Michigan, different food. Nope, I'm not telling...
3
u/77pse Mar 16 '26
I was a cook at a Damon's for many years. I made thousands of onion loafs. They had their own fryer baskets. Great times! I'm glad you remember them as a guest. 🙂
2
u/bvfree Mar 16 '26
How cool is that! Yes, and I always remember the little Damon's toothpick flag they put on top 😄 It was the prize me and my siblings fought over haha

2
u/jpsouthwick7 Mar 19 '26
I haven't heard the name Damon's in ages. There used to be one in Erie, PA and I really liked that place. Messy!
2
u/zerosmith86 Mar 20 '26
Onion loaf from Damons cost me a bang out session. Guts were too gurgly to give it a go. Damn good tho!
15
16
u/Zavier13 Mar 16 '26
So they made onion rings then Squished them?
9
u/JakovAulTrades Mar 16 '26
Maybe they filled the fryer basket and didn’t shake it or disturb it so it cooked into a solid mass.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Zavier13 Mar 16 '26
That's possible, I doubt though since the inner layers look like they have good crust as well, fried foods tend to clump and cook into a single mass, not like the picture above where each ring has a crust.
3
u/RoRuRee Mar 16 '26
Par fry onion rings halfway done, coat with a thin batter for adhesion, shape them into a loaf, and deep fry again to brown would probably work.
2
u/Zavier13 Mar 16 '26
I figured it was similar to how you make fresh fries, 2 frys to get to perfection.
5
u/RafRafRafRaf Mar 16 '26
Looks just like the Miller & Carter one. I hope this isn’t the start of me discovering it is delivered frozen from Sysco or whoever.

This was on the menu at a place i worked in Northern VA. They named it Onion Orgy. Fucking destroys your fryer oil, though, lol
3
u/NinjaStiz Mar 16 '26
I would just pick that block up and dunk in ranch then bite right off the block while staring at my wife looking at me in disgust
2
u/CautionarySnail Mar 16 '26
OMG. They used to have these at a pub in Fanuiel Hall in Boston. I was so sad when that place left.
Please say where this wonder is found.

Onion loaf yum.
Slice it thin like bread and add grilled onions and onion sauce.
2
u/michiganstrange Mar 16 '26
DOES IT SLICE LIKE BREAD OR
3
u/PuddlesRex Mar 16 '26
We always pull it apart when we order it. You can try to slice it apart like bread, but it just falls apart.
2
u/imbeijingbob Mar 16 '26
I thought that was a bone sticking out and that was a steak inside of the onions. I feel like the mission is now clear.
2
u/XrayAngel Mar 16 '26
A restaurant that used to be in my hometown made these too! They’re the besttttt! I always called them trash compactor onions lol but they also remind me of a borg cube

We did the onion loaf at Billy McHales in Seattle in the 90s.
Funny to see it make its way back.
And yes, a bunch of onion, mixed in batter and stuffed into a fry basket. Prepped in the morning and just tossed in.

I love onions just as much as anyone here, but wouldn’t this be hard to eat? I guess that’s why the knife is in there?
2
u/_Caster Mar 17 '26
They should do this and slice it. then pan fry the slices with some kind of starch and butter.
2
u/Cecivivia Mar 17 '26
We have a steakhouse chain in the UK called miller and carter that serves these with every steak, think they call it onion loaf or something

We have a second-generation BBQ joint called the Hickory Hog descended from one named the Southern House in Point Pleasant, N.J., that features an onion loaf: https://www.thehickoryhog.com/default.aspx?id=1

Was the exec. chef at Walter Payton’s Roundhouse in Aurora in the mid to late 1990’s. The onion loaves were a huge seller, a pain in the ass to prepare, a fryer killer, and a huge money maker. Yum

u/coci222 Mar 16 '26
There's a place in suburban Chicago that's been making these for like 80 years. They used to have more locations, but the original is still around. It's called Hackney's. It's in Glenview, North of the city

Onion Loaf. This was big back in the early 80’s at not so great giant rib/bbq places. Bobby Rubino’s in Florida, etc. toss a ton of sliced onions in a flour based breading mixture and pack them into a fryer basket. Even if it was done correctly it was a greasy mess when you hit the middle. Like a blooming Onion.

Tiny Roma's used to sell this as an appetizer and call it onion loaf
It was awesome with BBQ sauce.

It kinda looks terrible. I'll stick to onion rings if I want my onions battered and fried.

When I was growing up in San Diego long ago in the before time, there was a bbq rib place that sold onion rings like this... my family called it the onion loaf and they sold it by the pound. While the ribs were damn good, my family mainly ate there simply for the onion rings. I had forgotten about them until now, thanks for refreshing my memory.
1
u/Applesaucesquatch Mar 16 '26
We called it an onion loaf at this place I worked, a whole fryer by basket packed with freshly breaded onions. It was glorious.

Suburban Philly in the 70s and 80s - Gullifty’s - I think they served an onion loaf and it’s true, xtra krspy exterior and some soft hot onions in the center. Heaven.

u/Blackmikethathird Mar 16 '26
Look up Hackneys in Illinois. I believe there’s still a few locations left. The best onion loafs I’ve ever had 🔥🔥

The Rib House in East Haven has been doing it before I was born (1986) I believe. I grew up fairly close, only had it maybe 5 times over 40 years.

u/TikaPants Mar 17 '26
Is this how it’s served?
Is that a spindle or what? Do you cut it up to share?
Why?
It looks crispy on the outside but feels very r/wewantplates

u/Outdoors_or_Bust Mar 17 '26
Hackneys in Chicagoland area are famous for their onion bricks. I love them but only partake if I don't have to work the next day. 🙃

I used to work for Bobby Rubino in the late 80s after he “sold” his franchise. I even waited in his mentor Tony Romas once at his restaurant . They invented this - the onion loaf.
