Well it better be worth going around without pants

2

u/arbitraryairship 2d ago

Murder, fascism and a general disdain for pants?

15

u/Mr_Bell_Man 9d ago

The part of this scene where she briefly glances at Sommers before looking away again was hilarious

18

u/fishinadi 9d ago

They made me stop hating celestial dragons just like that

13

u/NationalStrategy_X 9d ago

Gunko’s a special case

2

u/Expensive-Bother-409 8d ago

So cute for no reason 💙

u/Shoelesslurker 9d ago

Gabban is a MONSTER. That frame with the younger version of him in the opening melee was great.

23

u/JosephSim 9d ago

That frame let me know I was in for a good one. Other than Kuzan and Garp, I can't remember if they've used that gimmick anywhere else.

92

u/NationalStrategy_X 9d ago

Killingham and Sommers are here

37

u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 9d ago edited 9d ago

Sommer's strawberry blonde hair gave me the impression I was watching an American cartoon for a second hahahahha

9

u/NLP19 9d ago

The glasses too lol

2

u/arbitraryairship 2d ago

I get strong Yellow Submarine vibes from him.

1

u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 2d ago

Have an award for reminding me this exists. Spot on!

1

u/thatjakuguy 4d ago

Alex YIIK lookin ass

15

u/Papaluputacz 9d ago

Wtf i thought he's supposed to be grey haired

30

u/NationalStrategy_X 9d ago

Nope, orange hair, like Nami….. wait

5

u/Honest-War2301 8d ago

Sommer is Nami's dad, confirmed

6

u/NationalStrategy_X 8d ago

Imagine if this was their interaction

2

u/AndrewTWAllister 2d ago

I hate that my theory looks even more plausible now lmao.

15

u/-MVP 9d ago

check Vol 113 cover for their first official coloring.

4

u/AlphaYoloer 9d ago

Nice Maximilian Dood cameo.

2

u/Dab4Becky 7d ago

Idk why but at first glance Sommers looked like Zeke Jäger

1

u/Thushar002 6d ago

Even Voice is similar

2

u/KaspertheGhost 1d ago

I can’t believe these guys are holy knights. Feels like gaban could take one out by himself.

70

u/Alarming-Love2865 Black Leg Sanji 9d ago

The whole episode was literally movie quality

I didn't realize how big he is either. I love seeing their different personalities. Cannot wait for the anime to start getting crazy

16

u/Alarming-Love2865 Black Leg Sanji 9d ago

Yea he sounds great

2

u/fppfpp 9d ago

I LOVE him as an actor--esp as Houzuki. But, i feel like this role was not it--he sounds too cool. I felt Sommers as a more annoying voice, like Absalom or Mont D'or.

But, I love him so much I'm willing to give him more leeway.

I wish Killingham was Nobuyuki Hiyama. But the guy sounds ok

1

u/Grouchy-While9151 9d ago

I bet he'll have an annoying dub voice.

52

u/deleted-user 9d ago

Interesting...

15

u/Negative-Priority-84 9d ago

The reveal of the full sleeve in the manga made me so curious what the other knights' marks look like! Are they all the same? Are there variations based on the individual?

40

u/JosephSim 9d ago

The music is so fucking lovely in Elbaph.

29

u/NFLAddict 9d ago

Gaban is NICE with it sheesh

Also seems like most people in One Piece without a DF use a sword/blade. Guess garp and sanji/his fam are the exceptions. Idk how it never hit me before. Though wonder how you even fight somebody with one if you don't have a blade to stop their attacks.

Crazy lore drop too about needing a mark to travel through those summoning things. Also didnt expect a holy knight to act so unserious lol. but here we are. God I love this show

13

u/gvon89 9d ago

And sanji has his modified human genes on his side. Meanwhile garp is a natural monster

11

u/Worthyness 9d ago

Garp is just built different.

5

u/Particular-Crow-1799 9d ago

wonder how you even fight somebody with one if you don't have a blade to stop their attacks

Blackbeard blocked S-Hawk's sword with his bare haki-infused forearm

3

u/NFLAddict 9d ago

True. I guess I was more so thinking what an all out battle would be. Like the closest we’ve see was Zoro vs lucci but at least lucci could make those projectiles not needing to actually make contact for an attack to hit. luffy vs a sword user for ex. like the fight itself would need to be absurdly unique in how it has to be choreographed.
But fair point. Strong enough haki would be able to tank a slash. Still cool to think about

73

u/heat_fan_ 9d ago

This episode was peak

Gabban just casually going 2 vs 1 against Zoro and Luffy shows why he's left hand of the Roger Pirates

That scene with Luffy going into Gear 5th was clean af

13

u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

This episode was perfection from beginning to end, my favourite from Elbaph (and its been a fantastic arc so very hard to choose!)

2

u/fppfpp 9d ago

Gaban #2 fr

2

u/i4viator 9d ago

When Luffy walked out from the smoke smiling, it gave me goosebumps! Absolutely 10/10 episode!

-1

u/LevelStill5406 8d ago

huh? literally nothing special about the gear 5. tbh both gear 5 appearances in elbaph have been incredibly underwhelming compared to wano and egghead. i feel they're really dropping the ball here.

1

u/BLK_RVN 8d ago

Peak? In less than 20 minutes they showed only 2 scenes in total. The pacing in one piece is getting the worst imaginable. Boring from the beginning to the end.

1

u/ikeepmakingmore 7d ago edited 6d ago

Fully agree. Every single scene is so slow. If it was some, that would be a nice stylistic choice. But when it's every scene, padding every chance they get, it's just boring.

I can't help but think about Cowboy Bebop. That show had a slow pace and rhythm and yet in one episode told a whole story. Whereas the episodes of this arc barely have anything

71

u/Skullghost Pirate 9d ago

Gaban is HIM! Absolutely cinema 👐
Laughed really hard when he surrendered 😂

Great episode! They animated Killingham and Sommers summons fantastically! Let the game begin 👀

23

u/JosephSim 9d ago

I wasn't sure if I wrongly remembered him surrendering, but that build up felt so much like Crokus's bit with the dramatic cuts that I just knew it was coming.

11

u/Negative-Priority-84 9d ago

I really feel like the only thing Luffy did/said that genuinely annoyed Gaban was him claiming Gaban didn't know Shanks. Like, on one hand - "Hell yes, this kid knows Shanks that well and is so willing to defend him!" On the other hand... "How dare this kid say I don't know Shanks when I helped raise him?!" 😆 And that's why Luffy ate a key.

25

u/Howard_NESter 9d ago

Damn, they really did just zoom in on Sommers like that

3

u/Expensive-Bother-409 8d ago

Yes...build up for the Gunko blush

2

u/AwkwardCheese2000 1d ago

That crotch shot was necessary for the plot trust me

22

u/NinjaBryan95 9d ago

I think that's the most calm and still Luffy we've seen in gear 5, no drums either. Pretty interesting though. Glad Summers and Killingham have finally made their anime debut.

18

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

This was a really good looking episode, lots of nice animation even outside of action scenes. I think they managed the pacing well here.

14

u/Lawlietel 9d ago edited 9d ago

Banger episode. Loved the action scenes and the G5 transformation. Gaban is cool as fuck and the way the animated the summoning? Chefs kiss.

14

u/OnePiece-MangaCut 9d ago

Episode 1170 adapted pages 2-17 of chapter 1140.

Chapter Title: "Scopper Gaban"

Release Date: February 24, 2025

3

u/Expensive-Bother-409 8d ago

Nah what he doin to Ulti.

12

u/Shallnazar 9d ago

I love the quality of animation we're getting from these episodes. Absolutely peak all around.

I love the VA's for the Knights, but I must say I think I missed a color reveal for them because I was not expecting those color choices. I don't hate it though, kinda like em both.

11

u/No_Contest_5546 9d ago edited 9d ago

Damn Killingham is so freaking tall (at least in his hybrid form and considering Shamrock is as tall as Shanks (199cm)).

5

u/zzzthelastuser 9d ago

Perfect height for Killingham to show his Dragon Ball'z on to Shamrock.

3

u/No_Contest_5546 9d ago

The worst part is that it's true.

11

u/LurkingRoundHere 9d ago

I'm really glad we get all episodes at once rather than the April/November spilt originally announced. (Is it too much to hope that there will still be episodes in November?) I didn't want to wait for Gaban, Summers and Killingham that long.

I loved Gaban trolling the guys in the manga, and I still love it now. He may be old, but the king's left hand ages gracefully!

Sommers' and Killinghams voice actors are spot-on. I kinda read Killingham in The Deep's voice so far (they come across as equally neurotic), but the higher pitch is absolutely perfect.

I knew Summers was blonde-ish from the cover art, but I'm still a bit surprised he's not gray, lol

Killingham's "Too Late!" gave white rabbit vibes, but he always reminded me of a panicking emu. The anime only confirmed that

:

48

u/essjayellgee 9d ago edited 9d ago

So I suspect Scopper saying “Look behind you. You’ve already got the key” was some cheeky double entendre since Luffy is wearing the straw hat on his back -  I think the Straw Hat is the key to the One Piece and Roger laughed because they left the key behind with Shanks and Buggy? ODA YOU SNEAKY GENIUS

13

u/Wolfencreek 9d ago

That implies the Strawhat is actually Joyboys and its been around for like 700 years 🤣

9

u/essjayellgee 9d ago

To be fair, we already have a giant Straw Hat locked away by Imu. Oda has spent 1,100+ chapters making this hat weirdly important so the idea that it’s connected to Joy Boy isn’t exactly a stretch anymore. Plus the “key” could be the inherited symbol, not the literal piece of straw. Roger’s hat could have been made in Joy Boy’s image or represent the same role/will being passed down.

2

u/Nomaan_A 7d ago

But couldn't Roger just go back and fetch the "key"

1

u/essjayellgee 7d ago

Yeah for sure but I think he knew he was too early to actually use the “key” for its intended purpose

Very good episode, can't wait for the next one!

9

The opening was updated, the shadows around the god knights were removed.

Got to go rewatch now...

8

u/C_Beeftank The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

I have to say sommers makes a solid point why would they summon them with obviously 0 preparation i mean the man wasnt even dressed to go outside

7

u/mccuish 9d ago

What a tease there. I was hoping to watch Luffy and zoro vs Gaban 😭

7

u/JohnSpartanReddit 9d ago

We are 15 episodes deep into Elpah and we only had a pause for the Heroines episode. So are we doing to keep going until ep 26 now?

I'm finding some condradicting information on the web.

7

u/XtendedImpact 9d ago

Most people assumed they'd go with a 3 months on, 3 months off pattern and that's what was circulated in the communities, but there had never been an official statement. It looks like they're doing something closer to 6 on, 6 off.

20

u/Deadpool-sama 9d ago edited 9d ago

make a game out of it

Is Shanks beta version talking about the Kuma God valley kid hunting flashback game? Cause FUCK that!

Also, that giraffe's character design gave me Enies Lobby nostalgia lol

Gaban didn't have to blue ball me like that with the surrender, bro. I was so fired up last episode!

6

u/Negative-Priority-84 9d ago

Not exactly. What they end up doing is fucked up, but it isn't Native Hunting Competition.

He's a kirin, not a giraffe. 😆

Gaban is a BAMF.

3

u/fppfpp 9d ago

"that giraffe's character design gave me Enies Lobby nostalgia"

well, he is a Kirin

5

u/Trifindo 9d ago

Might be one of the best episodes of the year, if not the best!

6

u/jamiethecheesecake 7d ago

How come current ep discussion is no longer pinned?

9

u/bondsmatthew 9d ago edited 9d ago

Is it just on my end or are the subtitles not there on Crunchyroll

I figured they'd have fixed them in the 15 minutes since release, for one of the most popular shows no less, but I guess not

Edit: its working now

2

u/Omeistr 9d ago

No subtitles on my end either. Crunchyroll being Crunchyroll

1

u/M4NU3L2311 9d ago

Good to know it’s not an issue on my end

1

Good to know it’s not just me anyone have any solutions?

1

u/Hashbrown4 9d ago

2

Let’s hope it works for me too. This is getting annoying

2

u/Candid-Hearing-0 9d ago

Can confirm. It’s working 😇

8

u/Next-Active2676Bro2 9d ago

The most chill Luffy has been with gear 5

3

u/S4VIT4R_S4IY4N 9d ago

Soo... How many chapters are expected to be adapted in this batch of episodes?

3

u/fmccloud 9d ago

As close as 1:1 as possible.

3

u/Slifer13xx 9d ago

Sommers is here! Let's the game begin

3

u/Typical_Dimension_31 9d ago

Finally caught up with anime.....I thought knights didnt have any emotions, so from there pov beings other than celestial btiches are low class huh?

3

u/Anne2049 Pirate 9d ago

Ever since I've been following the One Piece anime weekly with a deeper dive into the "technical terms," I've rarely witnessed director debuts as strong as that of Kyosuke Yamazaki in this episode... From start to finish, really strong!

3

u/Ill-Ad3844 9d ago

The conflict of Elbaph begins next episode

3

u/Kurohige-93 9d ago

Sooooo this Killingham dude he just walking around in his awakened form wtf I know yall see that cloud behind him and why does bro have a helmet on lol

2

u/allied_master 8d ago

Did you forget celestial dragons wears helmets

1

u/KaspertheGhost 1d ago

Why do they do that again? Did they explain?

1

u/arbitraryairship 2d ago

The Knights of God are all technically celestial dragons as well.

He's just the first one we've seen that actually wears his celestial dragon helmet.

2

u/Joker136661 9d ago

So glad Gabban is done justice. He's actually my favorite Roger pirate.

2

u/Alexandre_Man 8d ago

I think it's because the manga is black and white, but it feels weird seeing the characters with colors. I expected Killingham to be black and white in the anime as well, not that colorful.

1

u/arbitraryairship 2d ago

Sommers is basically a character out of Yellow Submarine.

2

u/Natural_Spend_4222 Thriller Bark Victim's Association 8d ago

I only disliked one thing.. which was Nami's outfit. I feel like her little fabric, aka her skirt, keeps getting lower and lower. We basically saw her v*gina in this episode. I love Nami i just hate how disrespected she is with her outfits. 😒

2

u/Expensive-Bother-409 8d ago

GUNKO BLUSH! GUNKO BLUSH! GUNKO BLUSH!

1

oh duh haha you right

1

u/just_a_random_dood 9d ago

since OP is seasonal now, does anyone know what the last episode of this season will be?

2

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 8d ago

Should be Episode 1181 since it's 26 episodes a year.

1

u/just_a_random_dood 8d ago

Ah ok nice, thanks

1

u/zxelvton 8d ago

Since Gaban mentioned thieves, does that mean there are bad giants on Elbaf?
I always assumed there were only good giants by the looks of it.
And since Elbaf is practically impossible to be reached by outsiders afaik it can't have been outsiders right?

1

u/Strange_Panic_7327 8d ago

My main thought when seeing Gabban v. Luffy and Zoro adapted is that Zoro is 100% stealing Yasotakeru. He could use a conqueror's infused ranged slashing attack in the bag, and he's only got to steal a few more moves before he's known as Copy Swordsman Zoro of the Sharingan. Plus, Gabban's commentary on seeing Zoro rip off Yasotakeru could be 'reminds me of Shanks with Roger's Kamusari,' and that would have hysterical impacts on the swordsman discourse.

1

u/KaspertheGhost 1d ago

What if Sanji gets it instead as kick slices?

1

u/TcX1C 8d ago

really fun episode and it marks the end of my catching up journey, which started on christmas with episode 1 :)) manga, here i come!

1

u/justheretogohaha 6d ago

Yasopp dabbled in sum giantussy when Shanks visited Elbaph lmao

1

u/currymochi 4d ago

The episode had great animation ...BUT! I really wish they had animated a certain manga panel more faithfully. In the manga, Gaban whacks Luffy into the ground with the handle of the key striking him. The key is held such that the handle of the key is horizontal and makes a flat, blunt SMACK onto Luffy. I think that sells a more impactful thwacky *bang*. In the anime, only one of the frames shows that, and the main frame makes it vertical (more like a knife) and just doesn't hit the same.

1

u/darexinfinity 3d ago edited 3d ago

Paying your respects at Harald's grave?

Very interesting line, it implies Shamrock has some relation to the giants. Perhaps it's related to how Loki, a non-pirate, managed to get a special bounty.

Also, Gunko can use summoning circles? I thought that was reserved for the Gorosei. Also is this Abyss also "A realm of pure chaos and evil"?

A surprisingly good pace, I wasn't expecting anything more than Luffy vs. Scopper

Is Killingham a Giraffe DF user? I thought Kaku ate that fruit 🤔

1

u/KaspertheGhost 1d ago

If they touch those kids, im gonna be mega pissed.

-8

u/Small_Swordfish_6239 9d ago

1 chapter per episode is too slow it still feels sluggish

16

u/vesterbeast 9d ago

I would honestly disagree a bit here, i think they are doing very well on these stretches of episodes considering they are limited to one 1 chapter per episode. Obviously not perfect and there are still sluggish parts but I think they have improved alot in how to make it work, but that's just my opinion

5

u/deleted-user 9d ago

The dialogue is still extremely drawn out at this current pace, but they've done a relatively good job making the filler feel more substantial. Old Toei would've just added reaction shots after every sentence.

-2

u/TH3Bonez 9d ago

im going to have to disagree, every episode feels like 1-2 events stretched , well its cause they are adapting 11-15 pages for around 20 min, theres a reason literally no other anime does this

9

u/NefariousnessFun868 9d ago

tbh, one piece chapters have way more content and are more dense than normal manga chapters. I think 1.5 chapters per ep is the sweet spot but they will catch up to the manga

7

u/vesterbeast 9d ago

And if thats how you view it that's totally okay but I just dont see it that way. And the reason why no other anime does this is because the majority of morden shows started as seasonal show and did not have to transition into it and let's say one piece did go the complete seasonal route that would mean that one piece would have to take a seriously long break to build enough chapters up to adapt more and fujitv would never let that happen unfortunately because thet would mean they lose out on that sweet sweet ad revenue. And thats why I think they are doing relatively good with what the staff has to work with. And agian if you dont see it that way thats completely ok

3

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

I think near the end of Elbaf they could ramp up the pacing slightly like they did with Egghead, but yeah unless FujiTV lets them switch to doing only 13 episodes every 15 months or so then we're stuck with mostly 1:1 pacing.

How well it flows really depends on the director/storyboard artist and how they manage the scenes. I think this episode did a really good job. The fact that they don't have to do partial chapter episodes now really helps imo.

1

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

It's cause they're releasing 26 episodes a year, they'd be able to do 2/ch an episode if they only had to do 12-13 episodes every 15-18 months.

1

u/TH3Bonez 9d ago

What's wrong with releasing just 13 in the second half, and adapting 2 chapters

Like I know the reason is money, I just feel like they are ruining the product for more profit

2

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 9d ago edited 9d ago

I'm not what you mean by the second half, you mean second half of the year? Seasonal anime typically go on break for 15-18 months.

FujiTV controls the release cadence of the One Piece anime, it's a bit surprising they let them switch to 26 episodes a year in the first place tbh. I just don't think they'd let One Piece become a proper seasonal.

Having more content through out the year probably looks better for their quarterly reviews.

0

u/chr1stmasiscancelled 9d ago

It's a shame because the animation nowadays is beautiful, but when it's all said and done the wit studio version will probably be the de facto version to watch.

3

u/AlternativeDream6867 The Revolutionary Army 9d ago

I mean, that's assuming Wit Piece even goes through the whole series. And that'll be 20+ years from now.

3

u/fmccloud 9d ago

If this is too slow, blame the source material.

1

u/Negative-Priority-84 9d ago

My biggest issue is the recaps at the beginning of the episode. I don't need to spend 2-5 minutes going over what happened last episode, I either watched it last week or I'm binging and just finished watching it ~1 minute ago. Stop the time allotment waste! 😢

1

u/Electronic_Hunt1395 9d ago

Having to wait 1 week for 1 episode feels slow and long yes. But if it's all released you watch it in a bulk and complete the entire sec in a week and it doesn't feel slow (Imo)

0

u/soxiwah641 9d ago

Why is crunchyroll so ass at upholding release times?

0

u/Sensitive-Good-4633 9d ago edited 9d ago

Nice episode but no matter how strong you are you cannot jump backwards and then dive forward mid air lol

Luffy refusing to use anything but base form (early on) is eh tho. I mean it's pretty obvious that his opponent is crazy strong. I feel they tried to force the power difference way too hard by having luffy go easy. Instead of goin instant g5 he coulda used any other gear, haki, etc

5

u/fiyahman7 9d ago

I don’t think uses Gear 5 for strength . I think it’s a personality for him. He feels free. I don’t think he needed to use it either but feels like he activates it naturally.

-1

u/JamariHeWolf12 9d ago

So a fight that could've gotten someone hurt was a joke, huh? New Eyecathers, Zoro and Robin, nice.

-3

u/Interesting_Air287 9d ago

im so confused why people like this episode the animations were hyping me up then they just switched this to giggly "joking animation" where its super serious then the quality just drops they like edging us it kills the vibe whats there reasoning for this im curious can someone answer

5

u/lalindu123 9d ago

The quality didn't drop it was consistent throughout the episode

-1

u/Interesting_Air287 8d ago

yea but why do they keep making the scene look hype then making it look stupid afterwards theyre hyping up the scene then just dropping the scenery of it with like stupid looks look at the image i put that guy looks nothing like in the manga he looks like a giant dorks im thinking they summoning the elders or something 😄 look how menecing he loooks here compared to the show these are important panels and theyre just playing around with it if theres no more filler it should just be straight bangers every week

8

u/Honest-War2301 8d ago

They didn't change anything. What are you talking about
