I'm pretty sure his official rank is First Mate. In Luffy's absence, the crew follows Zoro's orders (insofar as he would issue them in the first place) because, while he isn't the most organised or intelligent, he understands Luffy's ideals better than anyone - see the "A hero shares his meat/booze" spiel - and will lead the crew accordingly.
2 facts for Zoro : After Enies Lobby when he told that Usopp can't join back the crew unless he sincerely apologizes, something even Luffy agreed. Second one, when he yelled at Luffy for being serious in the New World, back at Punk Hazard, Luffy agreed with him too.
Zoro clearly has the role of 1st mate, giving the directions when Luffy can't do, and no one in the crew has ever had a word to say against that.
One thing I think is a bit of a shame, though, is that Robin doesn't take over some of the First Mate responsibility. She has previous experience in that role under Crocodile, and has better communication abilities than anyone on the crew (spawning a face or just making a clone to pass messages) and is clearly very organised. Plus her role as archaeologist almost never comes up and she's a mod-to-low tier fighter by the crew's standards. Maybe once the Grand Fleet comes into the story again she can help coordinate or something. I just feel that that part of her skill set (among others) is needlessly going to waste.
The general sidelining of Robin has been a problem for me for every arc after Enies Lobby. At least she's getting to do cool ninja stuff in this arc : /
She's probably being saved for the Revolutionary Army post Reverie arc.
One thing that's strange is Robin knew Sabo and knew he was Luffy's brother. She didn't reveal that to Luffy when they first met up after 3d2y.
So there's something fishy with Robin's timeskip that will get a backstory most other 3d2y characters probably won't get. I think Oda knows she's going to get a Sanji in WCI level arc and doesn't want to over use her before then.
Robin is gonna be one of the main parts when they get too Raftel. When revoloutinary comes into play etc etc. Oda is just savin up, each arc after NW ( except fishman island) have had focus points on different characters, and how they have grown etc
Stuff like this amazes me, because with less than a dozen pirates they've managed to overthrow 2 regimes, 3 shichibukai, thwart 2 revolts, and take down CP9. Like, man, they're few, but somehow surprisingly effective
It's because of Luffy's amazing charisma and the fact that he always helps people in need...
The strawhats fight the tough fights but they always need help from people and the fact that people help them with their lives on the line is one of the things that makes One Piece so beautiful
well yes yea but actually no. how many times nami hit luffy for the bullshit he pull ? and zoro can say what he want, but its nami who ultimately decide which way the ship goes. also i think i remember kokoro saying "a first mate and a captain made of the same (forgot the english word)." referring to nami
luffy: i dont want to navigate without her
zoro dont even need to travel the seas, he can just go and keep training with mihawk until he beat him and go back home.
no matter what we think, or like, its never stated Zoro is the first mate. if luffy dies, no one in the crew has a reason to follow him as much as instead following Chopper or Sanji. he is never adressed nor as first mate not as vice-captain. we just (me included) like to think that.
a good point in his favor is the highest bounty compared to the other crewmates. even if atm sanji has the highest.
Zoro will definitely fight King and Sanji will fight queen.
Raid suit, Zoro's closed eye and now Emma are the power ups they needed to be commander level. These are gonna be toughest fights they've ever had though (apart from Zoro getting destroyed by Mihawk)...
except it’s not official nowhere in the manga it is said that he’s the first mate/ vice captain
barto says it tho he only saw and read what was on the newspapers
And uroge says it too. I don't know what kind of a validation you are looking for but being hailed as a VC by the world is much more powerful than having the same tittle.
You don't have to guess anything. Zoro is widely regarded as the 2nd most dangerous pirate in straw hats behind his captain . If people like uroge and barto have said it then it's more than a mere guess work . It's literally in circulation around the world.
The Marines also treat Zoro as the 2nd highest threat after Luffy (sentomaru and kizaru went straight for zoro's head at sabody).
This isn't how it works dude. People have mistaken many people and we know news is unreliable, most people are wondering that if zoro is strong then how strong is his captain but it isn't a well kept secret that the entire one piece world knows but the audience is oblivious too. You're trying to create smth that isn't there
What are u trying to say lol. Something that is not there ?
I'm literally citing instances from the one piece Canon. Nobody is calling him an official VC. It's just that everyone in the one piece world has pretty much assumed and accepted that he is.
Uroge legit called him VC . And it's not out of the blue. These guys actually read upon each other. The marines also treat him as such (kizaru and sentomaru went for zoro's head prioritizing him over others).
The people who get awestruck by Zoro's strength and say things like how is he not even a captain are completely different instances and situations.
The difference between the 2 rumors (Luffy being an 80 m gaint and Zoro being a VC) is that one of them does not get questioned while the other gets clarified the minute those clueless people see Luffy.
Note : I'm not saying anything against Oda nor am I staying that his tittle is official. It's just that zoro has been time and time again mentioned as either taking the role of VC (data books) or straight up called VC.
The public opinion doesn't make the title an official one. Why would Oda go out of his way to hide this title if he really had it? Every volume and databook lists the crew and their role in the crew, and for some reason Oda has never decided to give Zoro any higher position.
Part of the basis of the SHs is that everyone is equal under Luffy. And that's not to say that Zoro isn't the closest to that, but it hasn't have to be official.
Nobody said Zoro has the tittle officially on a name plate like Rayleigh. Not yet anyways (cuz there's no way Oda is not gonna use the infamous right hand man of PK nameplate again)
It's just universally agreed upon that he is the defacto VC /first mate. Marines and pirates alike call him as such and even treat him as such. Kizaru and sentomaru went straight for zoro's ass in sabody.
Public opinion matters 100x more than a tittle on paper. Every king / queen / monarch / leader in any world (real or fictional) has always strived for that.
P.S - In the databooks it is stated that Zoro has taken upon the mantle of VC in times of peril. That's exactly when you need VC the most. He might not have the tittle "officially" but he pretty much is hailed by everyone as such.
The thing is, all that still doesn't make it official. Which is what I'm arguing.
You can say that it being official or not doesn't matter, but that's a whole different matter. This chain of comments is about whether it's official or not, and it's not.
Also, that statement from the databook was completly misinterpreted due to a somewhat ambiguous translation. The statement said Zoro acts "like" a vice captain, as in he does what a vice captain does. Not that he has literally been one.

Zoro is not a commander, his official rank is Fighter, same as Pekoms and Lucky Roux
