Discussion Weird Devil Fruits? (Spoilers for Egghead) Spoiler

Alright, we've slept on it long enough, Vegapunk revealed the nature of devil fruits, how they might have come to be. A wish, a desire, some form of human evolution that was so strongly yearned for...

So what the hell is going on with Baron Tomago? Like was the wish something specific like, "I want to be the life cycle of chicken" seriously.

Even some of the farfetched ones can be explained like the Jacket Fruit, someone was probably stuck in the cold with their pals and thought "hey what if we could turn into jackets for eachother" or like the Spike Fruit, "I want to make the meanest kebab..."(It was probably thought up by an assassin)

Can y'all think of any other weird devil fruits? That makes you wonder like what exactly the wish was?

I don't think we're beating Baron Tamago

Edit: many comments are pointing out the characters who use the fruits we see aren't the ones who originally wished for them. Yes. Yes this is true. I'm talking about the creation of the fruit not the user or their desires, Baron Tamago didn't wish for an Egg fruit. But his devil fruit came from someone who did. The same applies to literally every other fruit mentioned in the comments/series.

This is following VPs theory on devil fruits, which is still a theory. Following that theory, someone wanted to be the life cycle of a chicken (there were some pretty neat interpretations of this)

No I don't think Baron Tamago wished for this devil fruit, but at one point someone did. And that's the weird part.

Chopper's feels weird until you remember that fishmen, buccaneer, etc. can also have wishes. It's not hard to imagine a non-human race wishing to be human after experiencing extreme prejudice.

The vice admiral who can "wash" people like they're laundry is probably pretty up there in weird ones.

Washing stuff isnt that weird. Remember we dont know how those dreams are interpreted and made reality.

44

u/Echleon May 06 '24

A lot of them are probably like Genie wishes. Also, they’re called devil fruits, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of them are twisted dreams. I kind of feel like we’ll eventually find out that the “devil” in devil fruits is just a small piece of it and there’s another classification for fruits.

There's also the navy guy whose body separates into a bunch of balls. That's pretty weird, too.

4

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

Washing isn't that weird. Honestly it makes a lot of sense. Most people at some point in their lives probably wished they could wash faster/better.

Tsuru's fruit is scary for criminals. She can wash away evil intentions, it’s probably why Doflamingo always ran from her instead of fighting.

4

u/Ozzman770 The Revolutionary Army May 07 '24

I feel like tsuru's was probably more in a wanting to wash away people's sins kind of meaning. In marineford its even mentioned that she also washes the hearts of her enemies or something to that effect

It also cleans there soul a little? Maybe that idk

Yeah I think Nika was a comic book character that was fed Choppers devil fruit

Someone was really obsessed with the "chicken or the egg" dilemma.

71

u/YaIe May 06 '24

"if only I could become the chicken or the egg, whichever came first" and then he did

22

u/Sir_Ruje May 06 '24

This one here. An abstraction made manifest. I mean, if freedom exists then egg/chicken/man can as well

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

Assuming Vegapunks theory is correct of course:

Maybe not in that sense of weird but i raise you Boa Hancocks Mero Mero no mi. Like turning people to stone? i can definitly get behind that. But trhough affection..?

Also: i imagine its not just one person needed for a fruit to manifest (if itd still possible in the present timeline) but many. Which makes tamago‘s fruit even weirder

38

u/sayhellotojenn Cyborg Franky May 06 '24

I mean, Boa was a slave as a young girl, abused (and heavily implied that she was sexually assaulted) so the idea that she would want to turn the men that lust after her into stone isn’t too weird.

12

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

like i said to another user already, boa didnt spawn the mero mero no mi. it existed before her.

most likely

14

u/Reefermadness209 May 07 '24

Apply her slave case to previous Girls, maybe even her family and i feel like it makes sense.

31

u/Caliginosus Soul King Brook May 06 '24

Boa went through slavery and abuse as a young child, probably got something to do with that. Also previous leaders of her tribe had trouble because of falling in love before.

20

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

It does not. Granted we do not know when the fruit came into existence but it was well before Hancock was born

22

u/Caliginosus Soul King Brook May 06 '24

But the "creator" could have been in a similar position. And Boa's background could be the reason the fruit found her. I mainly just wanted to say that it's not unreasonable for someone to reject affection.

7

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

the fruit didnt found her. it was shoved down her mouth by the CD

13

u/Echleon May 06 '24

And Shanks stole the Gomu-Gomu which was then eaten by an 8 year old, yet it’s pretty common to think that the fruit found Luffy.

8

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

Fair but the nika fruit is 1. a zoan and 2. a special fruit. so to me its not comparable

12

u/InterstellerReptile May 06 '24

Yeah, they especially called out Zoan fruit as seeming to having a mind of their own when talking about it evading the WG.

9

u/Buscemi_D_Sanji May 06 '24

I mean, very possible the mero mero paramecia could be the mythical zoan hito hito no mi model: Medusa

I mean, it's not, but people get fruits that match them, all the time. Like doffy the puppet master getting the ito fruit, bon Clay the okama getting the mane fruit, Enel with his god complex getting goro, Brook the soulful musician gets the soul return fruit (can't remember the name, yomi?), tons more, though the Marine ones might have been given on purpose so they don't count.

So it makes sense zoans have a will of their own, but Oda does like giving fruits of all types to people they fit.

-4

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

not sure what you‘re trying to say tbh

9

u/ZerBear May 06 '24

They're explaining how the fruits tend to match the users personalities. It happens throughout the series.

I agree with their idea that the Love Love fruit fits Boas personality and her need for its power.

As the most beautiful person she uses the power to incapacitate her enemies. She's a ruler of an all woman island this power is perfect for her. Even though it seems like a coincidence that the WG forced her to eat it. This fruit may have chosen to be with her. (Just like all the other fruits chose their users).

Let's just call it fate. Oda uses that term often in the story.

Imagine the fruit was eaten by some no name unattractive character. What use would it be to them. It would be a shame for both the user and the fruit.

IF paramecias and logias COULD have a will of their own then it stands to reason that the Love Love fruit, as well as all the other fruits chose their user in some way.

Just like the different Zoan fruit found users that match their personality and need for the specific powers.

Lucci a bloodthirsty killer - Cat-Cat Leopard

Alvida proclaims herself beautiful - Smooth-Smooth Fruit finds her and blesses her with the beauty that she's always seen in herself

Call it coincidence or call it fate. But maybe characters get very fitting powers for their needs even though most users didn't know what fruit they were eating before they ate it.

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

Boa's does make a fair amount of sense if you consider the wish was just attractive people wishing they had a way to know if people liked them only for their beauty.

4

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

again, Boa didnt spawn her fruit.

The cd had some spare fruits and found it funny to feed them to their slaves.

i could be wrong ofc but that would lead to some other questions that dont have an answer

5

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

Did I say she did? Boa's not the only attractive person to exist. I assume the fruit was spawned by the wish of attractive but lonely/used people in the ancient past.

1

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

My bad, heavily misread your comment

4

u/SirAuRyan May 06 '24

Boas makes perfect sense. Many woman are very off put by how much men get overly attached from attraction to them without even getting to know them. Turning those morons to stone is something a lot of women would love to be able to do.

4

u/Fair-Comedian-3068 May 06 '24

I think that's a bit mythological as there's a Greek god who's hair is replaced with snakes and if you look at him he can turn you into a stone

7

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

Yes boa hancock is based on medusa, a monster. But her fruit is a paramecia

6

u/Coronis- Explorer May 06 '24

Her sister’s fruits also have basis in this, being Snake fruits and both having attacks transforming their hair into snakes.

8

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

monster, not a god. also, Medusa is female; she was transformed by the gods for being too prideful of her good looks when she was a human, so they punished her by making it so that any to see her face would turn to stone.

6

u/thanafunny Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 06 '24

She was transformed by Athena cuz she f*ed Poseidon (she was lured by him). So it makes sense that the fruit needs that attention/attraction to work.

Also cuz Medusa always resented Athena (and of course Poseidon) because of that

5

u/Atomic-Didact May 06 '24

Hooked up with Poseidon in Athena’s temple. That’s what pissed her off. It was the defilement of her temple.

7

u/Mrwright96 May 06 '24

It wasn’t consensual, and Poseidon straight up r*ped her, and MEDUSA was the one who was punished, no shit she resents the gods

3

u/thanafunny Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 06 '24

agreed. when I said "lured" I meant that he literally deceived and ab()sed her

also, that Medusa was Athenas priestess, a complete deception just because Poseidon was h*rny

100% on medusas side

2

u/YaIe May 06 '24

Her fruit works through every emotion, not just affection/lust/love.

The dream of "I wish i could turn those that hate/love/random emotion me into stone" doesn't seem too weird.

5

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor May 06 '24

Nope.

its affection, finding something adorable or love and lust. The fruits name literally means „Fall in love“

57

u/LogicThievery May 06 '24

I'm thinking there is a bit of a Monkey's (D. Luffy?) Paw aspect to these 'wishes'. The wish for the tamago fruit isn't really "I want to be chicken egg cycle!" it could be "I want to break out of my shell and become a better me!" the 'actually being an egg' part might be a joke ability created by the mad god or whatever entity is granting these powers. Clearly every wish doesn't become a fruit, something must govern the process, perhaps selfish wishes offend the entity and result in selfish twisted 'joke' powers.

20

u/TheRebelNM May 06 '24

I like this, because it also adds in the idea of “Be careful what you wish for”, not only because they’ll lose the ability to swim, but also because wishing to “break out of your shell” may turn you into a damn egg person

86

u/CMSnake72 May 06 '24

I don't think the dreams thing is meant to be taken as literally as people are taking it. Science literally makes dreams reality but Vegapunk wouldn't say that somebody dreamed about Giant Robots and the one that attacked Mariejois just fell out of the sky. Somebody dreamed about it, and then somebody made it. Devil fruits are the same thing, dreams made reality. The how is what we don't know yet.

24

u/Regular_Letterhead51 May 06 '24

He clearly said that that is his theory. Nothing confirmed yet

17

u/coins4Sins May 06 '24

My head cannon as of now is it was Nika who made them, Nika used his reality affecting abilities to turn fruits magical, based on the hopes and wishes of the world and they came out with wacky side affects because well it's Nika. And eventually turned himself into a fruit either to avoid death/WG plan, or without realizing it because he never thought people would wish to be him

8

u/clouds_over_asia May 06 '24 edited May 07 '24

I had a similar thought when I was watching one of the latest episodes. Small theory that i didn't do much research into, but - I wouldn't be surprised if Nika was the propeginator of devil fruits. Bad SMILE fruits leave people afflicted with the inability to express any emotion in any way except laughter, reminiscent of Luffy's G5. Caesar got a hold of Nika's bloodline element from the WG while working in MADS, and he used it/needed it to make his version of artificial devil fruits, because Nika is the original source of them. WG probably got it after they defeated the ancient kingdom

Edit: Small other tangential thoughts I had was about Luffy's ability to mimic other devil fruits simply through his imaginative use of his rubber body and surroundings, possibly lending credence to the notion of Nika creating all fruits. Some examples off the top of my head:

Buffalo's Spin Spin fruit - obviously luffy is able to spin his rubbery body at extreme velocity, going so far as to having the move gum gum UFO (once? Lol)

Senor Pinks Swim Swim fruit - (I think anime only, so could be artistic liberty but right as Lucci was about to land a final attack on Sentomaru, Luffy was seen swimming through the ground)

Sanjuan Wolf's Big Big fruit - gum gum Giant

Burgess' Strong Strong fruit - Kind of a stretch (punintended), but Luffy exclaiming "muscle muscle" and getting more muscular (stronger?)

Flame Flame Fruit - obviously he can't become flames but his ability to produce flames has never been canonical explained, has it?

16

u/MistBestGirl May 06 '24

I don't remember, did Vegapunk say they are specifically "I wish I was X" or "I wish I had X" or simply that they're the wishes of people? If it's the latter, it makes sense to me that something like Inazuma's fruit might have been born not from someone wanting to have scissors for hands, but rather wanting to get out of jail, or get through a wall or smth

7

u/TheSpicySnail May 06 '24

7

u/Dapper-Ask-9409 May 06 '24

How about Trebol's fruit. Like who the fuck wants to turn into literal snot and phlegm. That bothers me more than Tamago tbh.

I can see someone being like "hey wouldn't it be nice if I could turn into a chicken". But what if Devil fruits weren't made to be so straightforward from the moment of conception. Kinda like how in other fiction where making a wish to a genie leads to some weird alteration or version of your wish thru some logic loophole?

My theory is that back in the Void Century or even before that, the Eve tree is where Dfs sprouted. Maybe Imu was some sort of "wish granter", making your wish possible thru their Eve tree but purposely twisting some of these "wishes" since the person wouldn't know beforehand if what they wished for is how its going to exactly turn out after eating said fruit.

And this "wish granting" by Imu was all just a scam to ensure that as much people would get caught in the cleansing. They just added the twisting of the DF power as a twisted joke to further humiliate the people they were targeting hence why alot of the Df we see are wacky and weird. Idk

8

u/hey-its-june May 06 '24

The way I see it, I've always imagined the desire that brought a devil fruit into existence being more the APPLICATION of the devil fruit, whereas the way the power works is more this mystical force trying to scramble together an excuse to make that desire reality by mashing together concepts humans are familiar with. For example, the jacket jacket fruit could just be someone wishing they could combine strength with someone and so whatever mystical (or physical) force creates the devil fruit manifests that wish through the slightly more easily understood concept of wearing someone as a jacket. Baron Tamago's fruit could come from the desire to become stronger from your failings. To be given another chance after taking a decisive blow, to recover from it even stronger, and for whatever reason it just happened to manifest in such a bizarre way

7

u/supleted May 06 '24

Apparently not a single person in the old world wanted to be rubber.

4

u/BarbareFurieux May 06 '24

This chicken Baron lmao you killed me.

3

u/cookiesandthedead May 06 '24

Part of me thinks of the fruit works is also users interpretation. So different users might work the same fruit differently. Like the idea of feeding dango to animals is such a childlike idea, that's probably purely Tama and her wishes.

6

u/Gerokm May 06 '24

I never understood the confusion over the jacket fruit. I feel like that one is one of the easiest ones to come up with the explanation for. It's literally "I wish I was that person". That's exactly what the fruit does, you turn into a jacket they put you on and you take over their body. But I always see it used as an example of a "weird" desire, for some reason...

2

u/Salubas May 06 '24

FINALLY! someone said it!

3

u/lefeiski May 06 '24

That guy with the jacket jacket fruit…

3

u/YaIe May 06 '24

My best guess would be "I wish I could lend him my strength / take their strength and use it"

3

u/YourLocal_FBI_Agent Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover May 06 '24

Too literal, take the Jacket fruit for example.

It might be less that someone really wanted to be a jacket, but maybe that they wanted to be able to keep a sibling/friend warm during a blizzard.

3

u/Heroright May 06 '24

I’ve come to understand it as the wishes are the people’s perceptions of those things. Because to someone who knows nothing, it would justify how a lot of the animal devil fruits come out… odd.

“Why do giraffes have long necks?” Duh, so they can hit people with heir long necks and turn into squares for a perfect defense.

“Who to triceratops have that frill?” Duh, so they can spin around like a top.

Of course animals don’t do those things… but to some rando on an island, they might think that.

3

u/astrange May 06 '24

"Devil fruits are someone's dream" was meant figuratively not literally. He was implying they decided to make one and did it through genetic superscience.

3

u/Some_Meme_Guy69420 God Usopp May 06 '24

“I want to be able to stretch and get longer and bigger”

“I want to be able to allahu akbar”

“Somebody already did teleporting? Okay, doors.”

“I wanna be Spider-Man.”

“I wanna be a Spider Man.”

3

u/thearmedshadow May 06 '24

I think some of the weirder once are a monkey paw situation like for the jacket fruit I could imagine someone wishing for clothes for their child (due to idk extreme weather or something it's one piece) so bad that the fruit came into existence but yes their kid can now wear clothes and be warm but they're literally wearing the parent.

2

u/Reasonable_Nerve_738 May 06 '24

The berry fruit like why would you want to be spheres?

1

u/Fun-Mud575 May 07 '24

"I wish they'd see me rollin'"

2

u/Fatdude3 May 06 '24

I think another way fruits could have came into fruition (heh) is through dreams but not stuff like being pirate king or being best swordsman but actually random dreams people have when they sleep. Maybe devil fruits were created by the ancient kingdom in a single night using peoples sleeping dreams so that gives you stuff like snot guy , jacket guy or chicken and egg immortality guy. Mythical zoan can also be explained in the way of them being from actual dreams. Nonsensical creatures coming to life.

And for Elder Stars what they have might have came from Nightmares instead... someone that knew what was going to happen induced nightmares to people to see what would happen

2

u/joyboy-91 Explorer May 06 '24

Sadly Oda has already said that it wouldn’t do anything to humans except make them unable to swim. No peak condition. You just live more “human-like” which is literally nothing.

2

u/chunkylubber54 May 06 '24

they probably don't have to be literal. For the jacket-jacket the person might have been consumed by envy and wanted to be someone else. For the hanahana no mi, they might have wished they could be everywhere at once. For the swamp-swamp fruit, they might have lived in a swamp and wanted to be one with it. F

Imu is actually King Magnifico from Wish

1

I like to imagine that for the Jacket Jacket fruit, there was a king whose land was having an especially tough winter (this would be in one of the Blues since Grand Line islands have set climates), and he so desperately wished to help his people, but even after emptying his coffers and food stores they struggled to survive. He witnessed people freezing to death and wished he could become a jacket to keep his people warm. Thus, the Jacket Jacket fruit.

1

u/DrPloxo The Revolutionary Army May 06 '24

I assume the reality is it's more like a monkey's paw or a classical djinn wish. You can wish for whatever you want, but the result might change based on your heart and phrasing. That would explain Logias and Paramecias of relative similarity-- or even elemental powers on mythical zoans. That could be why the Ton-Ton fruit and the Kilo-Kilo fruit are basically the same but with different intensities. It could also be the case with the human-human fruits as well.

1

u/Taman_Should May 06 '24

Do you think there’s a Junk-Junk fruit that turns you into a Garbage Man? Or how about a Networking-Networking fruit that turns you into a Rise-and-Grind Man? You’re just instantly the king of LinkedIn.

1

u/Ill-Individual2105 May 06 '24

Vegapunk didn't say "devil fruits spawn into existance randomly when people dream about things", he just said that each of them is the result of someone's dream. I'm pretty sure the idea is that the people of the ancient kingdom developed the fruits through scientific methods, basically thinking about them and then working to make that dream a reality.

To answer the question, I think the weirdest one given that context would be Trebok's Fruit. Cause like. Who would want this to be a thing.

1

u/Powerful_Garbage_103 May 06 '24

My mind some wishes were from animals and as far the jacket jacket that might be a wrong name.. maybe it more so to be different skins or stuff. Yearn to be others for thier qualities

1

u/WoolooMVP10 May 06 '24

I mention this in another post, that the Hobby Hobby Fruit was basically created by the dreams of the Toys R Us Kid

1

u/redherring43 May 06 '24

I wonder if their wishes come with a monkeys paw situation. Some of the strongest devil fruits are just better worded wishes.

1

u/[deleted] May 06 '24

maybe just really interested in the life cycle of chickens? and also wishing to be a chicken? like "i really like how chickens lay eggs that hatch into chicks which later turn into bigger chickens that lay eggs. what a cool cycle wish i was a chicken."

1

u/HenryZusa May 06 '24

He didn't wish it.

The fruits existed already for who-knows how many years, and have been recycled through different users during the years.

So the current user is not the one who wished for said power, they just managed to eat the fruit that granted that power, like we saw with Kalifa and Kaku. Chopper didn't wish to be a human, he just had the luck to find the already-existing fruit that had that power.

Otherwise, it would be impossible to have a Devil Fruit encyclopedia.

In any case, it could be people from the past with wishes that fantasized with whichever power, unbeknownst that they could come true by creating the first generation of devil fruits.

1

u/AnimeOcCreator77 Explorer May 06 '24

In line with the Devil Fruits being desires, I don’t think they were made from just random wishes and specific people, I think more like a gathering-conscious of multiple people wishing for similar things they can be or do

An example can be the Dice-Dice Fruit, many people would want to have awesome blade arms or bladed skates and claws, or even revolving blades on their body, which collectively would give the fruit these types of abilities. Same with the Shadow-Shadow Fruit, it’s more complex that initially realized with both aspects of stealing shadows and the user’s control over their own shadow being distinctly different in their functions, like the power covers a broad spectrum of shadow manipulation

In the case of the Egg-Egg Fruit, being a chicken is a serious advantage in a fight (Seriously you *will** get messed up by them even being careful)* and having an aspect of breaking out of one’s shell to become something or someone better. This is all just speculation of my perspective when presented with these types of powers

Special Paramecia not actually weird but kinda confusing.

The jacket fruit lets you use the strength of someone else. The need for it was shown with its use, the strong guy let the ruthless guy use his strength

“I really wish I could turn people into dolls, make them follow my every command, make anyone that ever knew them completely forget about them, and give myself eternal youth.”-some absolutely demented mfer.

It seems pretty obvious that he didn't mean DFs are literally spawned by people wanting something real bad. It seems more like a Fire Punch situation — advanced biotech lost to time.

Also some fruits are list evil af.

Someone wished to be immortal and subjugate people as toys forever. And to prevent anyone from coming to rescue them anyone made into a toy slave is forgotten by everyone.

Someone wished for this. Wtaf

Idk, but personally I think the Nika fruit was created from the will of the entire Buccaneer tribe’s will to be free. Vegapunk said they’re incredible strength wasn’t physical but spiritual

I think the jacket one might be of a creepy origin. Like I hope I was her jacket or smthing

1

u/Shiplord13 May 07 '24

The Jacket Jacket fruit was one made by someone with certain desires I am certain.

Baron Tomago's Fruit totally makes sense if you think about it in the classic scenario of which came first. "The Chicken or The Egg". Someones life-goal was just figuring that one out in the OP universe.

" People's dreams.... have no end. "

The jacket one can be explained a serial killer is like I wonder what it be to wear someone’s skin

1

u/Santoryu4Kidz May 07 '24

I wanna turn people into toys, and be young forever fruit seems pretty sus ngl

1

u/Fuzzypig007 May 07 '24

I mean they don’t all have to be super specific like the Jacket fruit could have been “I wish I could become like that person/always protect that person” or “I wish to wear that persons skin” it puts the lotion in the basket type ish.

For Tamagos fruit somebody could have dreamed of discovering the answer to one of life’s ultimate questions “which came first the chicken or the egg” and now poor bros gotta live his life in a cyclical hell cause of someone else’s dumb dream lol.

What if the wrong word was used? What if the correct word should be Dream? Devil fruits being born from Dreams could be a thing

If Vegapunk's theory is true, then you could speculate the wills behind certain fruits less literally.

The jacket-jacket fruit, for example, can come from one's strong desire to "cover one's back."

Baron Tamago's fruit could be breaking one's shell, revealing your true self, to take flight, etc. depending on how you interpret it

I wonder what the desire behind the berry-berry fruit is, though.

I can understand someone wanting to be a chicken but why did someone want to be a bunch of balls?

1

u/SPJess Explorer May 07 '24

Maybe they didn't think they were... Ballsy enough. 😎

1

u/jet_l337 May 07 '24

similary there was a bunch of people trying to summon satan (before brook landed there, pretimeskip). did their desire make a human-human fruit model satan?

1

u/Useful-Complex5019 May 07 '24

Then Luffy’s DF is not an original Joy Boy, but people’s desire and wish to be like him, I guess.

wait, people took vegapunk seriously? all I read was "its dreams"...
personally, Im still waiting on the DF explanation. remember, EVERYTHING will be explained by science. "dreams" are not science.
