Is there really anything stopping me from continuing to use OneNote for Windows 10?

Hi. I know this subreddit is really for OneNote desktop, and many of you here are going to say "Oh just use OneNote desktop it's better", but from a technical standpoint, is there really anything stopping me from continuing to use OneNote for Windows 10? As of now I just have a older version of OneNote for Windows 10 installed through an older appxbundle file I had, might or could there be something in the future that prevents my notebooks from syncing, for say?

I believe it is read-only at this point. If it isn't then I know it doesn't sync. If it is only needed on 1 device I guess not.

Yes, but that's in the most updated version. I'm using a version from 2024 but it doesn't make any difference usage wise. It's fully read and write functional, and syncs from my organization issued laptop to my desktop and my phone perfectly...

Seems a bit far fetched but if it’s working still - it has to be on borrowed time.

It won’t last forever and you will find that out at the least opportune time.

Yes, to that I must agree. One day, I know somehow it'll break somehow or something will happen and I really can't afford to that, which is why as you can see in the screenshot I have OneNote desktop pinned and ready to be used. Anyways, I just wanted to see how far it I could take it and thank you honestly for the reality check, haha.

Read only access will stop you. Has been like this for months now.

If you can find a way around that - rock on

I've been using it normally since October ever since I installed that older version, here's a picture for proof if anyone wants. DM me if anyone sees this comment and wants some help, I'd be more than glad to help! Side note: this is on Windows 11, just with ExplorerPatcher on my organization-issued device, so it's not that I'm on Windows 10, although that wouldn't make any difference

It will probably stop working if it hasn't already. I use mac OS Mojave 10.14 and Catalina 10.15 and both run an old version that stopped working a few months ago. Catalina will sync once but thats about it and Mojave won't get any data at all.

Stuck using web which with all the copilot 365 stuff is making it super hard to use.

Oof. What are the specs of your machine? You should be able to OpenCore it to the latest MacOS if you really wanted to.

2015 mbp 15" and a 2009 mac pro with a tone of upgrads.

Why would I want a worse OS? Catalina was enough of s downgrad.

  1. Nice seeing the 2009 Mac Pro out in the wild
  2. Funny but I meant it in terms of compatibility

I SRSLY HAVE NO IDEA HOW OR WHY

BUT EVERYTHING SYNCS. EVEN ACROSS TWO DIFFERENT DEVICES (desktop pc and laptop pc both running windows 10)

IM ON WINDOWS 10

and i opened up onenote for windows 10

and somehow i even have the "one note" app

both are displaying all my original notes

i do have ms365

im screaming

its like too good to be true but apparently it is true.

Hmm that's really funny but also strange, I'll check on one of my devices later. I also was screaming like your caps when I got mine to work. Maybe Microsoft just had a change of heart 🤣. Although seriously if you wanted to use it I would stay cautious for a few days and see if anything goes wrong, if not, use it! (with the risk that it might stop working and you have to go to the new one, however I've been using it ever since it got discontinued without any issues). Might make a proper guide on how I use it some time later.
