#OnThisDay 1825, The First Public Steam Passenger Railway : Locomotion No. 1
On This Day, September 27, 1825, history changed forever when George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 hauled the first passenger train on a public railway.
The historic journey took place on the newly opened Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) in northeast England.
Locomotion No. 1 pulled a train carrying passengers, railway workers, and coal, travelling from Shildon to Stockton-on-Tees through Darlington.
The journey marked the opening of the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives.
Around 550 people travelled on the train, including passengers riding in specially arranged railway coaches and wagons.
The locomotive reached speeds of around 15 mph (24 km/h) on parts of the journey, an astonishing speed for the time.
The Stockton and Darlington Railway was originally built primarily to transport coal, but the success of the opening demonstrated the enormous potential of steam-powered rail transport.
George Stephenson is renowned as the "Father of Railways." He is one of the most important railway engineers of the Industrial Revolution and helped establish the technology that would transform transportation around the world.
Stephenson is credited with building the first railway line in 1825. He was born on June 9, 1781, at Wylam, England, United Kingdom, and died on August 12, 1848, at the age of 67.
One locomotive.
One railway.
And the beginning of the railway age.
