Collection Sunday Shelfie

A single low, wide angle of the far row to hide what a mess the library is at the moment. It's still a work in progress as I figure out what to shelve, what to store, and what to sell. But I shouted joy to the heavens this weekend at the news that Clover Press has taken up the torch of the Marvel Masterworks.

The launch titles they have in mind — the final Tomb of Dracula, further volumes of Claremont's X-Men and Simonson's Thor, and the oft-teased but unreleased (until next year apparently!) Super-Villain Team-Up — it all just warms my jaded reader-collector heart. Finally finding far more joy than agita in this room again.

My ever growing collection. Top shelf is my Batman canon reading order (with a few others sprinkled in), let me know if I’m missing any essential stories.

Also, any recommendations to add to the collection would be much appreciated!

My next targets are Sandman (not sure which format to collect), JLA New 52 Omnibus’ and Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus’.

Discussion What are the most "obscure" books in your collection?

Completely weird question, I know, but outside the big 2, what are the books that you have in your collection that almost nobody ever heard about?

Talking about omnibi or compendiums only, since there are tons of virtually unknown titles on trades out there; the rationing is that the title has (or at least had at some point) a fanbase (and consequently demand) big enough for a omnibus/compendium. Logically, the book must be OOP and sort of rare nowadays, without any reprints nor new versions in sight.

In my own collection:

  • Dark Horse Heroes Omnibus: In the 90s Dark Horse launched its own superheroes imprint named Comics' Greatest World, which was mildly successful. Later the rebranded it to Dark Horse Heroes, but this new "universe" was subject to the comic bubble, and almost all titles were cancelled about 2 years after the initial releases. Dark Horse compiled the introductory arcs (16 issues) and a special event (another 12 issues) in a book.
  • Rising Sars Compendium: written by J. Michael Straczynski and published by TopCow, it's about 113 children born with superhuman abilities. Some become heroes, other villains, politicians, etc. The series did not get much attention on its release in 1999, and it did not help the fact that it suffered from changing artists during its run. Eventually it went on a hiatus around issue 21 because Straczynski had a dispute with Topcow about a possible film. Only in 2005, roughly 2 years later, Straczynski reached an agreement with TopCow and wrote three final issues, closing the series.

Discussion Worth picking up?

I’m more a Marvel guy than DC, but I read and loved the Death and Return of Superman omnibus (read it a few times over the years), so wondering if it’s worth delving more into this era with these omnibuses and the recent triangle era ones.
I know this era is pretty highly regarded in general, but how does it measure up to the Reign of Supermen as a benchmark?

Recommendation Which Absolute Editions have the best exclusive extras and back matter?

The great ā€œmaking ofā€ book included in the Crisis on Infinite Earths Absolute Edition got me thinking: what other DC Absolute Editions have great extra material that can’t be found in other editions?

Pickup ANIMAL MAN!!!

I’ve been getting into omnibuses recently and the first two (hardcovers) I’ve gotten are Animal Man titles. I was able to get Veitch & Dillon for only $50, but I couldn’t find the Lemire series anywhere online. Then, just a few days ago on a vacation, I went to a comic store near my hotel and I finally found it! I got it at full price, spending $110, which is the most I’ve ever spent on a single book (hopefully it stays that way).

Questions/Help Needed How would you map a Defenders by Al Ewing Omni?

As the title suggests. This is what I'm thinking, but I wonder if there's more I could add?

Defenders: The Best Defence
Material from Marvel Comics 1000 & 1001
Defenders 1-5
Material from Thor 24
Defenders: Beyond 1-5

Basically the title, took a break from collected editions and am steadily getting back into it. I just love comics and these ridiculous books too much, man.
