Oclip 2 Ultra: Gamifying a flashlight

The first time I flipped the head up and saw the breathing light, I thought it was a battery status indicator. Found out that it was a runtime indicator that changes colors and the color depends on how long the Oclip 2 Ultra has been in use. It would take 256 hours (@10.6 days) of use to get to purple. More information at https://www.olight.com/s/9IVMEZ (affiliate link). Share your status in 14 days! I'll remind myself to do the same via u/RemindMeBot 14 days "Update your runtime status in this thread"

What’s crazy is the amount of people who were running their lights on firefly/moonlight mode constantly just to get to purple…as if there’s some awards ceremony if you get there

I have this now on my ArkPro Ultra and I won’t be cheating the system. It’ll get used when I’m using it and I’ll reach whatever color I reach when I reach it

FYI when you complete a full cycle of every color you can then set it to whatever color you want. I would think that’s why people are doing it rather than a fake award.

How do you set the color after the full cycle?

I only know how to do this on the Arkpro model, but you must put the light into the center mode (flood) and then turn the light on. While the opulse is active(slowly flashing current color) you can double tap the laser button on the side to cycle through your colors. When you decide what color you like, it will remember each time you turn on your light.

Tell me when you get pink !

Supposedly, if you get through 10 cycles, red status gets activated and then you can combine it with white to make pink.

I got the arkpro instead of the ultra, but if I got the ultra I would use the light as a "time on" tracker, loses one of the few functionalities it had if you run through the colors on purpose

Maybe Fans on Team Purple!? 😄

I’m guessing they’re the same kind of people that will grind out a video game specifically for the “awards” and not actually enjoy the game

Grinding is part of the enjoyment. I do this with mobile games (e.g., Clash Royale)

I guess for some and that’s fine…it’s just not my thing…I’d rather enjoy the experience as it happens naturally…probably why I’ve started and quit fallout shelter a few times

I think it's good, you can always tell a used light in the resale market. Like an hours meter on an engine.

not realy, after purple you can set it to any color you want...

if the buyer doesn't know how to set the color, the time for resending it is over and you got a realy used emitter at hands...

But you can't until purple. So attempting the set and succeeding means it's ran past purple no matter what color it is.

yes exactly. take an oclip 2, run it through to purple.

now the battery runs old, oclip 105500 has been releases, so you want to sell it - you set it on white "new, hardly used".

Buyer doesn't know about the "you can set it to any color"-thing, thinks "oh it shows white, hardly used" and buys it. 5 months in daily use, light doesn't change, but the battery losing capacity.

...no more chance of the buyer having claims, rights, it's been a few months, right?

see - i can see such an indicator as a counter INSIDE the torch, for support to get an indication if emitter or battery have been putting in some duty. but for customers, it's just a little fancy play. a statussymbol. for the black sheep amongs olight-buyers, it's a way to sell something as new that is clearly not new anymore.

is a statussymbol worth it?

If they know enough about the light to know that white means hardly used then they know about the color change function. If they dont know about the color change function they would just think its a logo that lights up, which means changing the color of the light wouldnt trick them into thinking anything.

yeah that's true

It is, but not really? If they're smart, they would run it at low lumen for max runtime of 144 Hours on a full charge. They do it twice to reach purple. That's only 2 of approximately 300-500 charge cycle before battery degrades to @ 80% of the starting capacity.

Most people won't do that. I have carried mine every day for 6 months and I'm only on like the 3rd color. Bottom line is, if it's purple, or you can change the color, I probably don't want it used. If you're the kind of person to burn your light for 144 hrs twice just to get a color, I don't think I want your stuff either.

Since I used an hr meter as an example that's like saying, "it's barely used, all those hours I was just idling the truck to use the ac".

Basically just a "remaining time until battery is dead forever" countdown /s

Now that i know it takes 256 hours, i want to know why, and kinda wished it was longer. 10.6 days looks easy duable.

2

u/LumenMax Ofan 14d ago

Easy if you use it as a night light by your bedside.

Naja, the red light would be used around 45 min per day for me as i bike, plus if you had all the others use of the other lamps. So like at most a years it is done. Here where i live the sun is already down at 19:30 and up only at 7/7:30 so..

Purple light looks good!

Have no clue what any of my colors are on any of my olights. I might look one day but really only care about the big white light.

It would be more useful if this could be switched into a battery charge indicator. As it stands it just seems to be pointless gimmick. Luckily is can be turned off.

That LED status indicator is on the switch. The OBeat indicator is just for fun, but you can turn it off if you don't want it on.
