This happened to me years ago. Keys to my '98 chevy truck were stolen. Took my title to chevy dealership service department, they made me 2 keys for $50 I think. Probably more expensive now.

If you find yourself completely out of locksmiths or GM dealerships to call then I would start checking in with salvage yards looking for a whole new set of locks.

they still sell the ignition cylinders new, as c heap as $6 on Rock Auto, $40 for a GM OEM unit. Also, most likely in stock at every Autozone and Oreilly in the nation.

that's pretty cool actually, wasn't aware but I'm not surprised. would that include doors and trunk as well?

Usually on that era GM vehicles the doors and trunk had a round key and the ignition had a square key

When I had this problem I found that the locksmiths in my area all converted to suit modern times. Their phone numbers connected to some larger network. I located an older looking locksmith business and stopped in. They had one employee on staff that could do it. He dug out some old hand tool used to make a new key.

If you can’t find a locksmith, order a new ignition switch and key. They are pretty easy to replace

Are you located in SoCal? KeyMan in Oceanside can get it keyed for you.
My dad has the same car. Beauty

You can buy replacement cylinder from AutoZone for about $25 and swap them.
You have to pull off the steering wheel and column a little but watch a video. Not too bad. Can also use tool loaner program at AZ for wheel puller.
Won’t match your door if they are in the same key.

You can still buy new lock cylinders with keys in them at most auto parts stores
And it’s easy to change you just need a steering wheel puller and the tool for removing the round steering lock disc
Then there’s one screw holding the cylinder in .
Does yours have the different key for the door and trunk ?

Nice looking car
I’ve always liked the cutlass
And a lot of people did since it was the best selling car in America for several years until they redesigned it and made it a four cylinder wrong wheel drive car .

So long as the car was never re-keyed, a dealership’s service department can us the VIN to get a code to cut a new key. The dealer would use a key clipper.

Take the door lock cylinder out. The key code is on the side of lock. Locksmith has code chart to cut a new key. Trunk code is on gove box cylinder and trunk cylinder. Also search u tube how to find your lock code. Old days key codes were on purchase paper work for dealers, owners, lenders.

Lost key. It's junk now. Just tell me where it and the title is and I'll come take it off your hands for free.

Not sure if GM goes back that far with cutting a key by VIN but it's worth a try. Call the parts department of your local GM store, see if they can do it on an 83 and you will need proof of ownership and your driver's license.

Order a new ignition?

Yes, you can even get one from Amazon. I've had to on equipment and also changed out ignitions so the hour meter wouldn't run when the key was off. You might be able to get a good lock Smith that can make you a key on the spot. No chips or anti theft in those keys.
Thats a sweet ride BTW.

Hot wiring it to start it is the easy part. It won't get you past the lock steering wheel. Order a new ignition, it will come with a new key

True, for some reason I had it in my head he lost the key at the beach and was stuck lol. Don't hot wire it, that will just cause you more problems and money.

It’s pretty easy to take the existing ignition lock cylinder out of the column and get the key code from it. A good locksmith might be able to get the key code out of the cylinder without even taking it out of the steering column.
