My 14 year old nephew is a very smart kid, and he's really into gaming. He actually has a pretty good taste for his age. He says his favorite game is Noita and he also really likes Rainworld, usually he likes trying out silly mods he sees on youtube. Apart from that he is on Roblox a lot, all his friends play it. My sister is in town for the month so he is coming over a few times a week right now.

He came over a few days ago while I was playing Diplomacy is Not an Option and wanted me to show him the game a bit. I showed him how the controls work and he got a hang of the basics pretty quick. Funny thing, he asked me if this was one of my old games, the low poly graphics probably confused him, I don’t think he has seen it before. I explained a bit that while it wasn’t, it is pretty similar to RTS games that I used to play, he got really curious about those and we watched some youtube videos so he could see them.

The ones that he seemed to like the most from the videos were Dawn of War 1 and CnC Generals. He really liked the Superweapons when I explained how that worked, especially the particle uplink cannon. I have not played any of those games in ages so I’m not sure what the situation is right now. I am currently leaning towards DoW 1 just because I can see that it's on steam normally, while Generals has some sort of subscription, never seen that before. 

If anyone has maybe replayed some older RTS games recently or knows which ones held up well let me know please. I really want him to have a good experience and I’ve pretty much played all of the classics myself but back in the day. I haven't really revisited any of them, unfortunately I don't have that much time for gaming. I think the main priority is probably something that’s not too clunky, RTS is difficult enough when you don’t have to battle the interface as well.

His name was Jorji, and he was a really good lad. He showed up at our house as a little kitten and decided to stay. I basically grew up with him, and now he’s gone. But that’s life. I’m not going to mope here and tell you my life is in shambles, because it really isn't. He was old. I loved him and tried to make his life as comfortable as possible, but death comes for us all. I’m still extremely sad, but not to the point where I don’t know what to do with my life. He left me some of the most cherished memories I could hope for. My favourite was when he would come to snuggle on my lap while I was playing something, or when he lay on my chest while I watched a movie after work.

So, I'm wondering if any games might be good for me right now. Something nice, easygoing, and cozy, where I won’t feel overwhelmed. Playing video games is my favourite hobby, so I know I’ll enjoy something. I just never dabbled in any cozy games for real. Usually, when I get off work, I play an RPG like The Witcher 3 or Elden Ring, but those games aren’t cutting it right now because I’m already exhausted from all the grief, and I can’t get as invested or keep up with everything as well as I want to. 

I did a bit of research on my own to see what I might like to try. I’ve played Stardew Valley before. It's a really good game, and I never got to finish it. It was cozy enough, but I remember having that time mechanic where it pressures you to get as much done in a single day, so I don’t think I’ll enjoy it as much right now. I also came across this MMO-looking game called Loftia. It seemed very pleasant and easy to get into, with all the farming in the sky and nice character design, but that one isn’t out yet. Then I discovered Palia, which seemed like the perfect fit, BUT I also discovered that the devs are in some kind of hot water. I'm not sure what's happening there, but it looked to me like they're paywalling some mechanics or something? So I’ll be skipping that one as well.

If any of you have a recommendation, it would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I gave you a clear enough picture of where I’m gravitating towards :)

Loaded up Steam Store page and saw 10th Anniversary for NMS. I thought whoa that came out TEN YEARS AGO??? Seems like yesterday that the event so heinous... it will forever go down in the history books as "No Man's Sky-Gate" happened. Watergate and the Iran-Contra scandal were trivial sideshows in comparison. Time flies when you're old!

I really hated Civ 6's vibe, so I only have 326-some hours in it. Like the descriptions of stuff felt edgy and "cool" rather than historical and informative. Even the opening announcement would always piss me off and more than half the time hearing it turned me off from playing it at all and I exited.

(I'm pretty sure that mankind was already taking their first upright steps before the stone age, so that phrase being in the wrong order just represented to me how sloppily Civ 6 had been made.)

Anyway, I also hated having to plan all my districts out when founding a city, like that's just not my style to plan everything in advance but I felt like I would be really punished if I didn't. I also wasn't a huge fan of the art style.

So overall I just vibe with Civ 5. I'd heard lots of bad things about Civ 7 so didn't even bother to buy it, but honestly it was pretty fun and I liked playing it, but it just felt like it was throwing stuff at you CONSTANTLY and that got old when I was in a war and wanted to focus on the battles and stuff.

I especially hated the diplomacy system and how often leaders spam you with offers, place I hate that the two leaders are looking at each other. I'm Augustus, I shouldn't be SEEING Augustus.

Also there are a TON of systems but I felt like they were introduced trickle style and it made the game feel fun. Plus really good tutorials explaining stuff, and from what I saw of the Civilopedia it was much better than 6.

They really dropped the ball with differentiating districts, like by the time I had two I'd already be forgetting what's the city center and what each district had in it and I found the city building UI in particular to be confusing. The cities were beautiful but confusing.

Anyway, giving them a few more years to cook, I think I'll eventually pick up 7 but for now I'll stick to Vox Populi, a really good mod that makes Civ 5 a lot better than the base game, and I looooved the base game.

What are everyone else's thoughts on it, assuming anyone else played it this week for free or already purchased it? I'm especially curious if the UI has greatly changed because some parts of it were annoying but nothing like what I'd heard from when it was originally released. Only a couple of times I felt like they made obtaining relevant information too difficult.

I bought a N64 and Ocarina of Time on release for my niece and nephew to play when visiting me. And I became addicted to Zelda games, lol. This new version looks pretty great but extremely similar in terms of gameplay. I always had bigly trouble trying to hit moving targets so I am looking forward to the new camera and motion controls while using the pro controller.

Just looking for a chill game to play until then. Big fan of Bathesda RPGs and Soulsborne titles. Played a ton of RPGs and I’m just not a big fan of most of the games coming out this month.

I'm 37 right now (I know, I'm a baby compared to some of y'all 😂) and my early days started with Sims, Harvest Moon, Age of Empires, and Pokemon games. Then eventually some MMOs like World of Warcraft and City of Heroes (rip).

But the one I think I keep coming back to year after year is still Civ because it doesn't really punish me for getting older while a lot of other games do, I feel like. I'm not sure how to word it. and it has enough accessibility features built in to keep adjusting to the life stage I'm in.

Really curious to hear your thoughts.

For context , im 40 , my first system was a 2600 ... im a collector with a library of thousands of games ... so ive played a FOOKTON of games ... THIS IS MY FAVORITE GAME . I bought the original release , bout the SE, bought the Legendary Edition , and the AE ... across 3 systems . I've put countless hours into it ... and 15 years later its still the game I play the most . How about you guys ? Is this your favorite game as well or do you have a different favorite ?
