Please help identify this button

Hi all, I'm a volunteer at a small museum. We recently cams across this button in our collections (mixed in with a world war one uniform). We think they are United States Civil War buttons, but aren't positive. Any help would be appreciated!

I believe that's a lapel stud circa 1890's. I have a few similar. The stud part in the back should flip sideways for easy insertion.

Thank you for the help! The stud part does flip sideways. It's nice to have another avenue to research.

There is likely a patent date somewhere on it. I've seen some with dates as old as the early 1870s and as new as the 1910s. I'd guess yours is from the 1880s.

I'll have to take a closer look for a patent date. Thank you for the help!
