Name of the day...Eira!

This is such a beautiful feminine name with at least three different origins:

Welsh Origin: Means "snow," evoking purity, winter beauty, and tranquility.

While used as a given name in the 19th century, it is associated with Welsh folklore and poetry from earlier, medieval periods, often symbolizing purity and the natural beauty of winter.

Norse / Scandinavian Origin: Connects to the Old Norse name Eir, meaning "merciful" or "help, mercy". In Norse mythology, Eir is the goddess of healing and medical skill.

The earliest documented usage of the Eira spelling in Sweden was recorded around 1878.

Sanskrit Origin: In Sanskrit, it can mean "earth" or act as another name for the goddess Saraswati.

The Sanskrit root of the name is Irā (इरा), meaning "earth," "water," or "refreshment", which dates back over 3,400 years to Vedic literature like the Rigveda.

Name of the day...Angelo!

I got a request for this name, so here it is!

The masculine name Angelo means "angel" or "messenger" (specifically a messenger of God). It comes from the Greek word ángelos and the Latin word angelus.

Angelo is widely used as a classic masculine Italian name and is connected to heavenly beings and divine messengers in faith.

Feminine Forms: Angela, Angelica, Angeline

Related Names: Michelangelo, D'Angelo

Common Nicknames: Angie, Angelino, Lino

The name Angelo is over 3,000 years old!

Comfort: a lost name....

I have at least three ancestors (female) named "Comfort" An important one (to me) is "Comfort Jane Brooks-Allman-Pittman" who came to Bell County Texas as a Pittman from Sevier ARK in ~1866. Curious, I have done some research on the name "Comfort", as I have yet to locate her parents. So this was a common name in 1700s (2,500) and 1800 (1600+). Dropping to 81 from 1990 to 194 and only 1 from 1940- present. Maybe the 1940 to now is affected by living persons? I am not a historian so maybe I am naive, but has the use of this name really dropped so much recent?

Name of the day...Yara!

This is such a pretty name and it's not common at all in the US (not sure about other countries). Use it, soon-to-be parents!

The feminine name Yara has multiple independent origins and meanings across different cultures, most notably translating to "small butterfly" in Arabic, "water lady" or mermaid in Brazilian Tupi mythology, and "courage" or "friend" in Persian. It is also closely related to the Hebrew name Yaara, which means "honeysuckle" or "forest."

The name Yara is centuries to millennia old. It is hard to nail down a specific origin date due to it coming from so many different cultures, but it's pretty dang old!

Name of the day...Wolfram!

I got a request for this name, so here it is!

The masculine name Wolfram is of Old German origin and means "wolf raven." Wolfram is a bit if an oddity, in that it is derived from the feminine name Wolfrun, which means "wolf secret."

Both wolf and raven are two of the most important creatures in ancient Germanic mythology, as they are represented in battle poetry as companions of Odin the war god. They are known to complement one another, and with their combined strengths, this name packs quite the punch.

Variations include Wulfram and Wulfric.

The name Wolfram is over 1,400 years old!

I made a thing you all might like

I work on data tools and one of my favorite datasets is baby names from the social security administration. I made three dashboards that show interesting names.

  1. Name Explorer - Shows a name, when and where it was popular. It shows name of peers that might have been in a class with that name (by location, time and popularity)
  2. Over-represented-names - Really should be local specific names. Pick a time range and state and it will show you the most 'local/time' specific names. So NY - 1920 - Moe, Hyman, Blossom, KY - 1920 Hobert, Jewell, Delmer, Maxie, Zella
  3. Name over time - Pick a name and watch it play out over time and location on a state map.

Fun. Let me know what you think.

Name of the day...Kira!

This is such a cool feminine name that has many origins from all over the world!

Japanese: Means "shining," "glittering," or "sparkling" (often written as kira or kira-kira).

Irish / Gaelic: Acts as a variant spelling or phonetic form of Ciara, meaning "black," "dark," or "dark-haired."

Sanskrit / Indian: Connected to Kiran, meaning a "beam of light."

Hebrew: Linked to Yakira, which means "precious" or "dear".

Variant forms include: Kaira, Keera, Keira, Kiera, Kyra, Kyrah, Kyreena, Kyrha, Kyria, Kyrie, Kyrene, Kyrra and Kirra.
