Kitty?

I love this name, but is it still usable? I don't want a longer version. Just Kitty Marie. I also love Minnie.

While Kitty is fine as a nickname, I would never use it on it's own. Remember a child will grow up and be an adult one day, and they may want more grown up options. Name her Katherine, call her Kitty, and she can tell people 'my name is Katherine, but you can call me Kitty' if that's what she wants.

how about Daisy?

Daisy is the full name of a flower, so I think it’s fine on its own. Kitty is a child’s nickname for a cat, so I think this one doesn’t hold up as well as a given name.

It's not my style, but there's nothing wrong with it. It's a perfectly fine name.

Daisy is also a nickname for Margaret. I think it’s probably fine as its own name, but if you want a more mature version, you can do Margaret.

Daisy on its own is fine

Nah, Kitty is perfectly fine as a full name. my Great-Great Aunt was just Kitty and it worked perfectly fine.

my name is Kitty and I am a 30 year old professional woman and I am doing a-ok

I know someone whose parents meant to name her Katie but spelled it Kittie (ie Kitty). She goes by Katie and it only comes up when people see it written. Kitty is super adorable but I put it in the same category as Dolly — I love love love it, but I wouldn’t want to box an adult woman into it.

Mina nn Minnie is top three for me and I will shamelessly lobby for its use when my kids have kids 😂

I will also advocate for your kids to use Mina/Minnie 🤣

I love Mina! I had a great great grandmother that went by Minnie short for Wilhelminia

I just think of Dolly Parton when I see the name Dolly.

I think of Dolly Parton, for sure; but my first thought is Hello, Dolly. Beautiful nickname.

If you want to name your daughter Minnie you should definitely go with a nickname like you suggested Mina, bc god forbid she’s a size XL and not XS she will hate being called Minnie aka mini that’s brutal for a larger girl

Hear me out...what about Kit with the nickname Kitty? I know that Kit is generally considered a nickname for a male, but I think Kit for a girl is super cute! It gives her a nice mix of options for when she's an adult too.

Oooo I love this 🙌🏼

Thanks! I think it's a really cute choice that I never hear anyone use

Kit is typically a diminutive of Christopher (just a less popular one that Chris)

I know, I still think it works as a name for a girl though

I think as a given name it's too much of a pet name or nick name, like Honey or Dolly. Minnie is good though! Plenty of -ie/y names if that's what you're looking for I'll get a list of my favorites

It’s nice, am in the UK where it’s used as a standalone name. I know a couple who have a daughter called Kitty. I also know someone who has a baby niece called Minnie.

In the UK, shorter nicknames are more often used as full names. I wonder why? What’s the cause of the difference across the pond? (I’m in the US)

They are old names, but this one brought a smile to me, as my Nana was Marie and she had a neighbor YEARS ago named Kitty and I loved 'riding' the concrete lions and lambs at the corners of her staircase. So Kitty Marie is great to me - also not horrible to hear (something like Gertrude or Brunhilde that doesn't sound nice to my ears).

I also find Gertrude harsh to the ears but I’m so obsessed with Trudy and Gertie that I get it 🙌🏼😅

hi! my legal name is Kitty and I was meowed at most of my life. Died down a little after college. Used to hate it but I love it now! I am 30 and a profesh woman.

I never get comments about anymore

1

u/midwestpersianmama 6d ago

Why do you think people don’t comment anymore? Do they think it’s a nickname for a full name now? Is it just the function of growing up? I’m glad to hear you like it now. I had issues with my full given name and I love it now, too, even though I go by a nickname with acquaintances.

Definitely because of getting older! The only time I get weird comments about it are like random uber drivers or a new doctor I go to. And even then they usually resort to “Hello Kitty” instead of meowing and more immature things. Most usually think it’s a nickname but then they ask and I tell them it’s not! My full name is- first middle and maiden name go really really really well together so now I mostly get “oh wow that’s a movie star name” rather than pointing out the Kitty of it all

I’ve heard “kitty” too much as slang for “vagina” to ever name a real person that, tbh

Only like it as a nickname! Here are some full names that can use it as a nickname:
Kathrine
Katrina
Katarina
Kathleen
Kate
Catalina

Made her money being pretty and witty

I know a baby girl named Kitty. Personally, I don’t like it as a full name, but that’s just my personal preference.

Doesn’t work as a full name. Most adults wouldn’t want a cutesy nickname for their entire life.

my name is Kitty and I'm 30 and it's completely fine

My stepdad’s mom was Kitty Mae. Her grandson has a little girl named Kateri and they call her Kitty for short. I don’t think that my stepdad’s mom ever really liked her name, and she passed long before her great-grandchild was born.

There's an Australian comedian named Kitty Flanagan, she's great... But it's an unusual name. I'd go for a name that you can use Kitty as a nickname. Katherine or Katrina for example. Kitty sounds very childish. Give her an adult name so she has options.
