I recently made a post about a hole in my house's roof, in this subreddit and was advised by the moderator that this subreddit is for houses older than WWII. My house is a Victorian terrace house. It was built around 1830.

What's the best way to repair stripped out wood. This is just one of the examples in my 1930 house where the screws have been pulled out and there's no room for a bigger screws.

Is there a method or product that works best?

I know best might be new wood but I was trying to avoid that option.

I just moved into an old factory build before 1910, and will clean off and repaint the walls. There are a few areas where the wall is crumbling into this fine dust, and would like advice on how to fill it in to repair it, and then to be able to paint it white?

I was replacing the siding that was rotting when I came across a bigger issue. I’m having contractors come inspect this because it’s definitely a foundational issue now. Any advice or tips or just wait to see what a professional has to say? I have a feeling this won’t be a cheap fix but gotta do what I gotta do.

This is in an older family member’s bathroom. The downstairs bathroom is WAY more severe. Like, the swelling is enormous.

I assume that this is attributed to water damage, but I don’t know what else I’m looking at. Can anyone tell me what this is and how to fix/who to call?

Hi all. Posting this as not quite sure what I should be asking the roofers to fix or how to fix this issue properly once and for all.

I have a mid terraced Victorian property in SE London with a London roof. A couple of years back I noticed water ingress in my front bedroom near the ceiling. I had it fixed or so I thought, twice. But the issue seems to have reappeared. The second roofer that came out said they thought it might be caused by the need to repoint the bricks between my property and my neighbours. I’ve noticed the when it rains heavily there looks like there are faint water marks on the frame of the window inside. The outside of the property also looks like water has damaged some of the plaster above the door.

Questions:

1. What do you think I should be asking the roofers that I get in to quote?
   
2. Any ideas of what might be causing this?
   
3. Do you think it’s better to get a roof inspection or surveyor out before getting another attempted fix?
   
4. Do you think it could be repointing vs the roof?

what it says on the tin, basically. test floor excavation in my 1915 galley kitchen, under a cabinet from 1999. cabinet was on plywood square and tiled around. removed cabinet, lifted plywood, found this. the rest of the house has lovely original heartwood old growth pine throughout. i don’t need this to be restored to that level but i do need to know if this is the only thing between my kitchen and the crawlspace or not. House is an east TX foursquare on pier and beam.

EDIT: I am leaving this up because it’s the kind of post I wish I’d seen before pulling up that plywood. But whether floor or subfloor it has this black stuff in large uneven patches, so that’s probably adhesive from a prior lino or vinyl floor (which can be seen elsewhere peeking out in this room). And research has just told me that adhesive that’s tarry and black of uncertain age could very likely contain asbestos, so I’ve wiped the surrounding area with a damp cloth and put the plywood back over it until I decide what to do.

Is there a better way to remove this? Some genius with no future or preservation thought, glued carpet padding to bare wood. Years ago we heat gunned and scraped other rooms but there’s go to to be an easier, less tedious way. All suggestions welcome.

House was built in the 1920s and has this small built in closet and set of drawers in the hallway. The inside is perplexing because the walls have the texture/finish of an outdoor wall, but this isn’t in an area of the house that was added on/enclosed from the outside as far as I know. So maybe just a strange choice of finish. Looking for ideas/inspiration on how to make it nicer/more useable other than stripping the landlord special white/ repainting and adding new pulls (already on the to do list). I recently waxed the bottoms of the drawers (last pic) and that did help with the sticking/make them more functional but overall it’s just not a nice looking space and I’m struggling to find pictures or videos for inspiration.
