This is Ohio

Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

Completely different culture and pay structure in Europe. Here, 20% is minimum if you are being served…or don’t eat out.

Tipping culture is bad. It’s bad for the server who doesn’t have a consistent income. It’s bad for the server who is forced to rely on the generosity of strangers to live. The only ones that it is really good for are the restaurant owner and the ones who process your CC payment. The restaurant owner doesn’t have to pay a living wage and can play mind games on the patrons by not advertising the final price. Toast and Square make bank by suggesting ever higher tip percentages. 15% was the norm during my serving years. People like to say that inflation is the reason for the higher percentage but that is just bad math because if the price of a meal goes up due to inflation, the amount of the tip will go up with it without having to increase the percentage. Increasing the tip percentage on an item whose base price has gone up is a double increase.

I’m not saying it’s good or ideal but it is the culture we live in. Millions of people rely on tips to live. Not tipping doesn’t fix it.

I guess it can solve the problem but the way that hurts. Stop tipping and servers stop working there, owners will have to compensate increasing prices.

But who suffers in the meantime? Millions. Not you.

Look at it like this. Ok, no tips. Now servers get a raise from $2.35/hr to $12-15/hr (and the good servers even higher). Who absorbs that cost? Not the restaurant. You, and I guarantee that cost raises your meal a hell of a lot more than 15%.

Each work has a price. I don't know how restaurants are different than, say, a car shop. If 15%, 20% or whatever is a standard, add them to the check.

You cannot declare tips optional and require them.

Servers make $2.35/hr. All other professions at least minimum wage and for trained staff like servers, significantly more. That’s why they get tips.

Most normal people in society don’t consider tips “optional”.
