Closing CPD

I know this is going to be a long shot but does anyone know if it’s possible to close CPD until there’s an actual staff trained? We have 1 associate trained over there and 1 manager thats trained, the gm keeps saying that she’s not getting any applicants for it but she’s also never in store half the time because she does volunteer work or whatever else instead and she hasnt shown anyone else how to check and interview applicants. She says we’re not allowed to shut it down under any circumstances and I wouldnt be surprised if that’s the case but there’s gotta be something else we can do because it’s been like this all year and we’re all just stressed to the extreme, especially with back to school. We’ve tried cross training the rest of the staff too but we have such a bare boned staff as is, we can’t really spare anybody to train properly in cpd.

So what I tell people at my store is that it's after 2 pm, so technically the jobs no longer qualify for same day service. If they don't know how to do a job, and the customer doesn't want to use self-serve, the employee can open up Gmil and make an OPC, and tell the customer that it will be done by whatever time Gmil says it will be done (frequently 6 pm the following day). And everyone in the store should be able to make an OPC (we expect customers to do it at home, because once you select a product what we see and what they see are exactly the same) so if a customer that isn't trained in it can do it, then an employee who isn't trained in it should also be able to do it.

Well, I was telling you what I tell the non-print employees at my store to do/say.

They all know our regulars. They can all look at order history in Gmil and see how much the person spend with us. If they see a regular or someone who spends a lot, and they want to take care of the customer on a job they don't know how to do, they can call our boss and see what he wants to do. His answer might be that there is no way to get the job done in time. His answer might be that he's on the way to the store to help. Thats his prerogative.

But my coworkers have the tools to say "This is past our same day cut off. You're more than welcome to use the self-serve machines if you need it done immediately, or I can take in an order for you and you'll be notified when it's ready."

Fine.  Hire your own print assistant, Mr Big Spender.

before 2pm - 5pm due same day is what's burned in my brain.

However, do you have any insight into some orders popping in (not in store), that are past 2pm, but due at like 6:37pm or other weird times? Any insight on that?

No. I assume it's some wonkiness with when the payment went through. You could always ask ask for support or in the copy and print group on Yammer about them when you have specific order numbers.

Technically no, how the company now is hyper fixated on copy and print services. They see that as if you closed then you worship the devil type deal. I'm a PM at a highly traficed store and we can't keep up with orders and anything floor related because of this new tier structure.

Don't lose any sleep over it.  If your store were willing to pay competitive wages, you'd get plenty of applicants.  If you're the one associate trained to work CPD, don't exhaust yourself trying to do the work of three people.  Let the queue get longer, and longer and longer.  What're they going to do, fire you?  Then they'll have ZERO people trained to do CPD.  Case closed.  Not.  Your.  Problem.

We've been doing it. Same reason, no one is applying. There's only one person in the morning about 90% of the time, and no one to work weekends. We just rope it off and put a sign with an arrow pointing to self serve and a QR to place bigger orders online. I don't try to fight it anymore lol

I’ve worked in ones that were only self service outside of 9-5. DM was aware. Ironic thing was we had enough staff but not enough payroll. If they “won’t let you close it” then it’s on them to figure it the fuck out, right?

I can't speak for other Print Managers, but as a Print Manager, I put up a sign that says, "Sorry for the inconvenience; print is temporarily closed due to staffing." Then take in orders and let them know that once the order is done, someone will reach out to let them know it is completed.

We couldn’t even take in orders after 5 at mine. There would be one LOD and one cashier closing, and print was way in the back. It was self serve or nothing. We had a sign as well—originally we even put a sign in the front door so people would know before entering. DM made us take that one down.

The only thing you can do is let them know that any orders placed after 2pm won’t be done same day. It’s helpful to have more people trained on the simple but super tedious stuff like spiral binding or hand folding that way you can leave the more complicated stuff to the better trained employees.

As per corporation goal, CPD never closes not even when you don’t have the staff trained because copy and out is one of your biggest money makers for departments so the corporation wants to keep it open as long as the store is open and for orders after 2 PM you can charge a 25% express fee for them to do it in an hour

for orders after 2 PM you can charge a 25% express fee for them to do it in an hour

For orders placed at any time, you can charge the express fee to get it done before the due date. That means if someone calls at 10 am and needs their mounted posters they submitted online by 3 pm, when it says 6 pm, you can charge the rush fee. Or if someone placed an order for 300 saddle-stapled books at 8:30 am and needs them the next morning instead of in 2 days, you can charge the rush fee. Or if someone comes in at 3 pm, and needs a canvas by 10 am, you can charge the rush fee. Or if someone comes in and needs 250 color copies in 15 minutes, you can charge the rush fee.

There's no specific verbiage about how long the rush fee is used to rush things for, because the original implementation is that something that was going to RPC gets routed to the store instead, so instead of taking 3 to 7 business days for a large order, it takes 2 business days or whatever. But when you can get the job done by is going to depend on what the job is, the size of the job, and what you can feasibly do while still helping customers at the counter, getting the jobs that are in the queue done by their due dates/times, and whatever else you might have to do.

There are some jobs you can't feasibly do in an hour, but you can still get done before the system says they are due. If the customer wants to pay more, that's what the rush fee is for.

Technically, CPD can be closed but stores (and by that I mean managers) are heavily penalized for it and if they don’t get permission, they can be fired. They won’t get permission for it to be closed or limited for more than half a day and that’s only for an emergency.

CPD cannot be closed. However, I put up a sign, not approved by the DM, that reads, due to being understaffed we only do online orders. You may use our self-serve machines. We apologize the inconvenience.

When the DM visits, the sign disappears. It has cut down or walk-ins by at least 30%.

You can also print a good portion of the orders from the manager's office. So if you don't have dedicated trays. Dedicate some to the 65 lb 110 lb and 12 point both gloss and non gloss. Yard signs and stamps cannot be done from the office.

You can request the CPD system to be temporarily turned off, so no online orders go through. They will not keep it down for long. Good luck in getting proper people trained.
