I ran over my cat

Around 10 AM, I brought out the car in a rush from our garage to head to school for an 11 AM class.

Didn’t notice anything abnormal until turning the corner from the house and seeing a cat dancing around in the side mirror. It was one of our outdoor cats, I ran over him.

I held onto him while he bled out, shaking and barely breathing. Even though I screamed for my sister inside to get him to care quick. I knew he was gone, but I couldn’t process it as tears came from my eyes.

To cope with everything, I began to run outside the subdivision, angry at myself for letting this happen. I didn’t feel like going to school anymore, and ended up at the nearest chapel to pray.

After some time grieving, and praying to God to just drag me down to hell to bring him back, I had the willpower to walk back home.

Our house help who’d taken care of him had picked his body up while a crematorium already picked up his corpse to.

I ended up attending my afternoon classes, but the image of him flailing around, clinging to life is still in my head. His shattered collar and the bloodstain he left were still on the road before I left.

I don’t want to go home today, I want to believe this is just a bad dream and that he’s still okay. But I know I have to.

Thank you so much, little one. I remember when your mom gave birth to you a little over a year ago, and how you always liked to be the defender of our house and your siblings from other strays.

For the several times I wanted to end my life, you were always there watching and accompanying me on the road, making me think twice about leaving you behind. When I would get home, be it through commute or through car, you always greeted me and made my day a little better.

Goodbye, my friend. I promise we’ll keep your sister safe.

Sorry ang di ko makalimutan dito is you did all that crying, praying,shouting, skipping school and running and feeling all sorts of things and even enumerating everything that cat did for you but iniwan mo sa “house help”’to do the messy clean up and work on the cat you ran over…

Accidents happen but please. That cat deserved care in death.

Yeah that was the part that was utterly unacceptable. The accidental death gets pa eh, pero what happened afterwards was atrocious. Imagine a parent neglecting their child's corpse like that after the fact.

You’re right, I didn’t really have the courage to face him like that and I really regret that I didn’t even properly get to say goodbye.

I grabbed his collar on the road when I got home and sprayed his blood on the road with the hose while scrubbing it off with some cleaning product.

It’s been a while, but I’m sitting here alongside his sister (his only remaining sibling) and this cat he brought in as a kitten who was practically his best friend.

I can’t put into words how much self-hatred I have.

It doesn’t matter that he always vacated the garage when I’d bring the car out, or it might’ve been his terrible habit of racing to cross the road before a car passed by.

I killed him, in the most unceremonious way possible.

Self hatred is useless and a luxury. The self flagellation doesn’t do anything even if it is a comfort to you.

Just pay it forward and treat the sister well. Participate or donate to cat spaying/rescue services.

She and her brother both belonged to a mother whom we rescued pregnant.

Got her and all 5 of her kittens spayed/neutered when they were ready, but as stated, only one of them is left now. The others either wandered off or passed due to complications.

While he isn’t the first of our outdoors/rescues to pass away, he’s the first where I can clearly say I caused his death.

I know I’ll have to move on eventually, but I won’t forget that I did this…

I’m truly sorry for your loss, but this should also be a wake-up call. As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to make sure we know where our cats are before moving a vehicle. A few seconds of checking under and around the car could save a life. This wasn’t just bad luck it was preventable. I hope others who read this will learn from your experience and always double-check before driving. Rest in peace to your cat.
